Two years ago, the first DC Repeal Day celebration (organized by Derek Brown and Lonnie Bruner) was maybe 15 folks packed into the back room of Billy Martin's Tavern, enjoying a bit of come-as-you-are cameraderie in the shared appreciation of an unheralded anniversary. My, how times have changed. A secret hope of mine has been that 2008 would become the year that DC burst full-fledged onto the cocktail scene, and if last night was any indication, that time has come. Nearly 300(?) people flooded the ballroom of Georgetown's historic Revolutionary-era City Tavern Club for an evening of drinks and dancing, organized by the fledgling DC Craft Bartenders Guild in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment. With a live jazz band playing throughout the evening in the corner and the city's top mixologists ringing the flooer, the crowd was joined by such national beverage luminaries as ModernMixologist's Tony Abou-Ganim, Eric Seed of now-indispensible Haus Alpenz, LeNell Smothers (proprietor of NYC's favorite "brown likker" shop), and Oregon-based mixologist and Repeal Day founder Jeffrey Morgenthaler. I'd exhaust myself trying to list the numerous DC bar chefs who were mysteriously able to get time off on a Friday evening to enjoy themselves and the work of their colleagues. It was literally a three-and-a-half hour open bar of excellent cocktails from some of the finest hands in town, but it felt as if half that time had passed. Somebody else, I'm sure, will have kept notes on each of the cocktails on offer, but they included Owen Thomson's opening cider punch - made from apples he personally pressed, Tony Abou-Ganim's uber-rich family recipe for the Tom & Jerry winter warmer (count 'em THREE Kitchen-Aids whirring along), and Todd Thrasher's magnificent spin on the pisco sour. If you were there, you know how indescribably electric the atmosphere was. If you weren't, then at least rest assured that the craft of creating great cocktails is proudly resurgent in our fair city...and you've got 364 days until next year's party. I don't know if the City Tavern donated the space for the night or if it was paid for, but that place was the PERFECT venue for this crowd. If you are on the fence, find some of the pics and reviews from last year as it was about the greatest party ever. While I haven't heard a ton about this year's event, what I have heard suggests that they are trying to exceed that rip-roaring, ridiculously good time.
