Propane Tanks

I just bought a clearview 20 lb. lightweight propane tank, now I need to get it filled. All the places around here are tank exchanges-does anyone know where I can get this filled?

There's a bottle gas place down Route 1 in the Beacon Hill area that will fill it for you. Lee's Gas is the name, I think.

Edit: Bugger, I think they closed. Call first.

I still love propane taxi...;-)

Yes, I use them too, but that doesn't help when you own a special tank that you want filled.

A few years back I owned a couple of tanks that had built in gauges. My wife thought she was helping when she took one of the empties and exchanged it for a full one.

After finding Roberts Oxygen that next day, they informed me they did not fill propane tanks & the person on the phone must have misunderstood me. A little more searching & I found Campbell's Propane, who used to be on Rt. 1, but moved to Manassas-they told me that the Gas & Go on Rt. 1, between Belvoir's Tulley gate & Fairfax Co. Pkwy, refilled tanks. I filled it today, the guy admired my clearview tank, & after having a conversation w/ his friend while filling my tank, asked if I spoke Pashto. I told him, regretfully, that it was one of the many languages I did not speak-wonder what they were talking about? I'm so glad I found someplace close by to fill the tank, didn't think it would be so difficult...

Yesterday I got my tank filled at a place in Germantown called N & S Rentals.  What was amazing to me is that the exchange bottles you get at Home Depot or Lowes only contain 15 lbs and costs about $20 nowadays.  N & S fills the 20 lbs tank to 20 lbs and charges $18.00.  I always figured Home Depost/Lowes/Giant/etc. were jacking me, but never by over 25%.

I think the takeaway here is: Everyone should call their local hardware store (which is a tragically endangered species) and ask how much they charge.

I tweeted about this, and I hope to hell this contributes in some small way to society taking a much-needed step *backward*.

Think about how much $15 might mean to a mom-and-pop small business, and think how *little* $20 means to a mega-chain.

Poolesville Hardware, just west of the main intersection in Poolesville, also refills propane.  The owner (since 1987) is John Speelman...just a great, stand-up guy, who happens to be a retired NHRA top-fuel drag racer.

Across the river, many years ago, I think it was the Mobil on the north side of 7 near Dranesville that also refilled propane...perhaps somebody local to the Sterling area could doublecheck.

Propane tanks are a pain in the butt for me to deal with - ever since I discovered Propane Taxi, I pretty much use them exclusively and, for me, it is worth the convenience.

I don't know, it took about 5 minutes for the whole transaction which is less time than going to Home Depot/Lowes/Giant for the exchange.  I am also cheap!  For me the convenience in getting 25% more and having to change it out less frequently is worth the drive.

I have used them on and off, but it is not stated on their website anywhere how much they fill the tanks. One could easily see them doing the HD/Lowe's thing and only filling the 20 lb tank to 15 lb.

Found this on the website.

Exchange your empty tank for our inspected, precision-filled grill tank. Our tanks are filled to a net propane weight of 15lbs.

My issue is the hassle of having to remember to grab the tank, go do it and come back with a now heavier tank. Given my stupid back issues, I prefer to avoid lifting heavier things when I can - for me, this is an easy avoidance of lifting a now full tank.

They used to fill them to 19 or 20 lbs and then backed off and down to 15 lb. Gotta make a buck I guess.
