The Red Fox Inn, Charming Country Inn With Patio In Middleburg Serving Three Meals A Day

Recommended Posts

We had an amusing experience at lunch today. We both ordered the Chicken Salad. The menu indicates that it comes with curried chicken, a salad, and tea bread (all on the same plate). My wife is allergic to nuts, and we should have asked if the tea bread had any. Our chicken salads arrived, and, yes, the tea bread was loaded with nuts. My wife told our very charming server of her allergy, and her salad was whisked away, presumably for some nutless bread or some additional salad as a substitute. After waiting several minutes our server brought the "new" salad to our table. There was no bread, but the dimensions of the plate were smaller. The kitchen had scooped the chicken salad and the green salad onto a smaller plate. Why didn't it simply remove the tea bread and return the original plate? Would not have taken more than 15 seconds. I'm sure there were legitimate reasons, but no explanation was offered.

We chuckled about this through our lunch. Middleburg in January is quiet and peaceful. No bikers roaring up and down Washington. No leaves to obscure the panorama.

Maybe they thought the original plate might have been contaminated by the tea bread?

So how was the chicken salad?

Also, what are the breakfast options in Middleburg now that the Coach Stop is gone?

The chicken salad was passable, but far from memorable. Red Fox also serves breakfast and a Sunday brunch.

Thanks -- that sounds right in line with my experiences at the Red Fox Inn -- it's a safe choice that will neither kill you nor blow your socks off. I do like the peanut soup, which against all odds I find to be a wonderful dish that I seem impossible to resist.

We'll give it a try for breakfast!

Is it even possible to find a business in Middleburg that doesn't look absolutely charming? I double dog dare you.

Anyway, the peanut soup was really, really, rich. I definitely paid for it later. That's what I get for eating 300 year old soup.

The burger was dense and unremarkable, but the fries were perfectly greasy and salty, and the beer list was a blast.

This is definitely a place I would come back to on a snowy February day, order a pint and some fries, and just cozy up at the bar, wondering how many Confederate soldiers bled to death under my coaster.

I don't understand:  the reviews are consistently excellent for the Red Fox Inn on both Yelp and Travel Adviser.  The Red Horse Inn-an entirely different place-has a lot of negatives.  Are you sure that you are not confusing the two?

No, Joe, I know what I'm looking at, and they are not consistent on Yelp. I am asking here, because it's pretty clear that it was "fine" and fairly innocuous from the above reviews and I'm just seeing if anyone has had recent first hand experience.
