After perusing your list:

  • Ultimate Chicken Bistro, Toscana Grill -- out of business.
  • I haven't been able to connect to Rocklands in the last 6 months.
  • I still can't connect to Liberty Tavern.  I see the Netgear signal, but I can't access it.  Maybe it's due to my old Blackberry.

From BonChon Thread

Re: Arlington Bonchon

....

Also, they WERE giving out the wifi password yesterday at least.

Re: Fairfax Bonchon

Unless they've changed it, the WiFi password at their Fairfax location is their phone number including the 703.

It's also very necessary there as that entire area is just a complete damned dead zone for Verizon.

Any more updates on wifi?   I'll update the wifi master list soon.

If you go to the Kimpton website and become a Kimpton In Touch member (free) you will be able to connect (for free) at any Kimpton property after an initial sign in.

Yes, this was the case when we last dined at Jackson 20.

The obvious guess here is that they want to turn tables, not have people hanging out. It's just a guess, but I think it's a sound one. "Unbroken" has been my friend of late at non-WiFi restaurants.

Probably right. And, just my view but think that thinking flawed. Between cell networks, tethering, paper reading materials, downloaded or locally stored materials and work, and long conversations, not offering wifi isn't the way to prevent campers. Starbucks is a multi-billion corp just now investing to upgrade its slow AT&T network (~2 MBs down) to google (15-50) nationwide. It's becoming table stakes for coffee shops and fast casual but still some holdouts. Too. Inch focus on trees rather than forests imho.

I'm using wi-fi less and less in bars, restaurants, etc. these days. It's generally an order of magnitude slower than a 4G connection because of the load, and with the mobile companies throwing data boosts around like candy, I never use even half of what they are giving me. The only time I look for public wi-fi is when I'm on my non-mobile tablet, or when I'm in a (rare) dead area for my mobile signal.

More or less agree, Daniel.  I use a wifi-tablet often so that's part of my issue.  And, some especially large or cavernous places have cell network dead spots inside.  At the end of the day, the world is clearly moving this way.  Some coffee shops and fast-casual restaurants are dragging their heels but they are increasingly in the minority. And, as you say, modern 4G connectivity makes the issue a bit moot in many places.

I'm adding a tablet to the household soon, and thinking hard about adding a 4G-capable tablet. My mobile plan only charges $10/mo to add a 4G-capable tabled to my plan.

Who's your service provider?  AT&T or Verizon?  At $10/month, I'd do the same.  Wasn't that low when I got our tablet.  Of course have to be careful about data charges beyond the monthly if not unlimited though.

You think the world is moving away from wifi and toward 4G? Really? (Or do I misread you?) It seems to me that it's moving in precisely the opposite direction. 4G expensive, wifi cheap.

PJ Skidoos in Fairfax has wifi, no password required. They also offer a very good, reasonably priced crabcake.

PJ Skidoos in Fairfax has wifi, no password required. They also offer a very good, reasonably priced crabcake.

I think eventually we'll get to the WiFi-ubiquitous world, but for other than reading email, I find WiFi incredibly slow in most restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Most probably have one low-bandwidth connection for all patrons, so as soon as the first person hits Pandora, the entire place comes to a grinding halt. It is rare that I can't get a significantly faster connection via 4G, so I usually don't even bother with the shop-provided WiFi. Again, this is because I currently don't use anywhere near my monthly data cap from my provider, so I don't mind ignoring the local WiFi.

You think the world is moving away from wifi and toward 4G? Really? (Or do I misread you?) It seems to me that it's moving in precisely the opposite direction. 4G expensive, wifi cheap.

You have misread me. The world (at least as defined by coffee shops, fast/casual restaurants, cafés and many public places) is moving toward omnipresent connectivity. Yes, of course wifi. Maybe WiMax down the road. The move away is those places who still don't provide wifi in an ill-conceived effort to turn tables (imo). PJ Skidoos (a place I haven't visited) is but one of very many offering free wifi nationwide. And that number is growing very quickly.

This (speed) is also changing. Locally the most obvious example is a Starbucks who have quietly upgraded most shops from slow AT&T to faster (anywhere from 15 to 50 MBPS download speed) Google.
