Dr. Mitchell Dunn, MD is a physician with the practice Parker, Kline, Dunn, and Horowitz located at 2021 K Street NW. His practice is a private pay practice, so they accept NO insurance. That's not as awful as it sounds. Most of the charges at the office fall within the reimbursement parameters of my insurance company. You have to submit the claim, pay your out of network deductible, and that's that. I spend about several hundred dollars a year extra in order to see Dr. Dunn -and it is worth every penny.

Imagine being treated like a valued customer at the physician's office. Imagine a healthcare practice that values your time and money. A typical physical consists of the following. Arrive at appointment time. BE ON TIME, because the office will be. Within minutes of arrival you are having bloodwork drawn. Then the PA comes in and goes over history, checks vitals, etc. etc. Then Dr. Dunn comes in and performs a full physical. This lasts upwards of 20-30 minutes. Oh yeah, and he talks to you. A lot. You get dressed, and are escorted into Dr. Dunn's office where he goes over the physical exam with you and answers questions you might have. You are in the office for maybe an hour and at no time, other than dressing/undressing, are you not being attended to by a physician, PA, nurse, or phlebotomist. Two days later you receive a letter from Dr. Dunn outlining your physical condition, prescribed treatments, etc etc. The letter is 4 pages long, and it is thorough.

Need to see a specialist? Call him and ask for a recommendation, and the next thing you know you are referred to a physician of equal caliber in the metro area. Need a prescription? Call the office. If he already has discussed the underlyng issue with you, it will be at your pharmacy in minutes. Just want to talk to him? Call him. He'll answer (or return your call promptly) and he'll know what you want to talk about because he knows YOU.

I have to say, after being in dozens of doctors offices over the past 20 years, there is no comparison. His practice, attention to detail, and clinical abilities are truly spectacular.

Just as a side note, last evening while driving home at 5:43pm, I got a call from Dr. Dunn to discuss results of some bloodwork. Did I have time to talk?

He went through my bloodwork results (which Emily, from his office, had already provided me earlier in the week), then proceeded to ask me a slew of questions about diet, exercise, work hours, family life, etc. etc. In essence, he gave me a verbal "physical" exam. He asked me what I wanted to do, regarding the course of treatment and effortlessly referenced things we had done in the past 2-3 years, and interwove the latest studies and their results into the conversation. We came up with a plan.

The call lasted 18 minutes. When is the last time your physician spent 18 minutes with you, even on an office visit? When was the last time your physician called you to talk? The cost was $0. The value was priceless.

I agree. Dr. Dunn and his staff are definitely worth the extra hassle of paying the bill yourself and filing with your insurance. Along with the excellent care received on a regular basis from him, I have had to call his service several times on the weekend before going on a trip. Each time, it has been Dr. Dunn who called me back, not one of his partners, and he was always familiar with my medical history, what I do for a living and special details pertinent to my case. I could not recommend him more highly.

Thanks to Brian's recommendation, I went to see Dr. Dunn after moving into DC this summer.  I was attracted by the fact that Brian's description of Dr. Dunn's practice was reminiscent of my former doctor, Dr. Kevin Gil in Rockville.  My experience with Dr. Dunn was exactly as Brian described and I was very pleased.  We had a lengthy conversation in his office following the physical exam and I learned that Dr. Dunn is interested in good food and restaurants and apparently has quite a number of chefs as patients.
