Looking For A $50 Red Wine At Le Diplomate

My two choices would be the Laffont Madiran, primarily Tannant I believe with Cab and Cab Franc blended in, or The Chateau Coupe Rose Minervois, a Syrah, Grenache, Carignan blend but medium bodied. good spice and length. If you go up a notch past the $50 range spend $67 on the Faury St. Joseph. A beautiful Northern Rhone wine that has more feminine style than the Masculine Roties and Cornas' usually bring forth. You still get that salty-ness but the fruit is a bit more upfront.

Thanks, Josh--that Coupe Rose was one that caught my eye. Don--I probably prefer the earthier type of wine, though I don't know what either of us will be ordering tonight, and I can't speak for Bob's preferences. If you have additional suggestions, please send them on!

What you're looking for spending $50 here is "pleasant," I hate to say. It's distressing that I'm saying that despite Le Diplomate having a relatively nice wine list.

Everyone on this website should bookmark the list of producers imported by Ed Addiss at Wine Traditions, an importer from whom I've never had a bad bottle of wine. I've spent a lot of time trying to find one on Le Diplomate's list to no avail - if you can give them a quick call and ask if they have any wines from local importers, and then relay that information to me, that would be useful (also, if you like earthy wines, steer clear of Robert Kacher Selections).

Coupe Roses is a wine I've enjoyed many times over the years, and you won't go wrong in ordering it. I think it benefits from a little bottle age, so the 2012 might come across as young, but with this list, you don't have much choice. And, it comes from Roy Cloud at VIntage '59 Selections - another page everyone on this website should bookmark. This probably means there are other Vintage '59 wines on their list, and this - like Wine Traditions - is a "throw a dart" importer: Pick the region, pick the price, and you'll have your wine if you stay with either importer.

I may continue to hunt around a little more, but you'll do just fine with Josh's suggestions.

Thanks again, both of you. The Coupe Roses turned out to be a very nice wine--one of the better I've ordered in that price range. As you say, Don, it maybe was a bit young, and might have developed more body/depth over time, but as Josh said, it had a nice spice to it that you don't always find at the lower end of the spectrum. And it paired nicely with both bouillabaisse and steak frites, so I can recommend it to anyone who wants a decent bottle there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
