A Challenge - The Nicest Meal for Two: $150 All-In, Including Tax + Tip

Recommended Posts

Here is the challenge -

Provide suggestions of DR.com worthy sit down restaurants where 2 people can get a nice meal and walk away (all in!) for $150.

Caveats

  1. Must be in DC proper
  2. Must include 3 courses for both people - an appetizer, a main and a dessert (small plates/tapas are not to be suggested as I know I can hit those places and control costs) EACH (6 total course for 2 people)
  3. Must be reasonably metro-accessible (weekdays, my wife is metro only)
  4. Must have a decent chance to find parking nearby (weekdays I'd be driving in to meet wife, and weekends would be driving too)
  5. Must assume a 20% tip
  6. Must include the 10% (right?) sales tax on the meal
  7. Must ideally be a BYOW friendly place (free, cheap or by no means more than $25 corkage total)
  8. By my calculations, this means $90 for food (actually $90.38 - $150 less $25 corkage less $11.54 tax less $23.08 tip)
  9. Do not include cocktails or wine or anything, planning or corkaging it in general

This seems like it should be easy - '$150 for 2 people? No problem!', but it really is $90. That's like two $10 apps, two $25 entrees, and two $10 desserts. Again, it seems doable, but it is so easy to go overboard.

I raise the challenge because dining out with my wife is one of my most favorite things to do (lots of reasons). $300+ is a lot harder to do than $150 hence the challenge.  Part of the reason for this is to also broaden my scope to try some new to me places.

Thanks!

You stole my answer, ok, ok: Montmartre (they don't have their desserts listed, but I assumed $10 for each and food costs were $92) or perhaps Lavagna?   But really Dino is a great choice.

Ha!  You stole my answer! I was going to say Montmartre, you can easily hit the food cost, no idea if they do corkage.

If you really had good luck with street parking, DGS and Soi38 would probably hit the price requirements.  I've been told good clean living does it every time. Nooshi might not be that hard to find parking if you went to the Capitol Hill location.

Dino's

Oh well I knew this one. It's solid. But I also have been, so I am also trying to expand in to places I have not been to yet.

Lavagna has a menu that reminds me of a basic enoteca menu (like Cavour 313 in Rome). Thanks!

This is great too! Thanks

Dang Metro accessible -- otherwise, Al Dente would work.

Bernaise in Cleveland Park?

I do not see a place in Cleveland Park, but rather between Capitol Hill and Eastern Market metros.....maybe I am spelling it wrong.

DGS's menu is fine, but not really what I am looking for. So138 looks pretty good! Thanks!

Room 11

This looks good, too. Gotta love a menu with beef tartare on it too.

Boundary Road

OK this one looks really good! Especially considering Julien's recent comment in the other thread.

3 COURSE AT ROGUE 24 $55.00 PER PERSON  TAX 5.50 PER PERSON  BYOB (WAIVED IF YOUR A MEMBER) SERVICE CHARGE IS UP TO YOU......

I haven't been to Rogue 24 yet, but I'm a big fan of Gypsy Soul. Sounds like an easy choice! (Note to self: get to Rogue 24)

ROGUE 24!!!!

PoolBoy, as an objective observer with no dog in this fight, this is the best option on this thread if you haven't been. I'm still not sure what I think about Gypsy Soul out in Fairfax but R24 is the real deal and, if you haven't yet been, you really should go anyway. With these new deals, even more reason to go.

You know, it has been quite a while since we've been. hmmmmmm.

You've got the chef of one of the best restaurants in DC, basically saying, "Come on in!" and offering you a dr.com discount.

I know what I'd do.

I'd also tip right up to $150 considering BYOB was waved - that'll be about 20% anyway.

The bar at Corduroy.  Even though I'm there on nearly a weekly basis, I never tire of the 3 course options.  And the corkage fee is very reasonable at $25 (max of 1 bottle).  Take your leftover $30 and each of you can get another starter from the regular menu, or some cheese or dessert wine.

Boy, do I second this! The duck confit on the bar menu was simply stellar and it came with mashed potatoes and variety of veggies. Really didn't need any other food and wound up skipping dessert altogether.

We'll be going there soon. No pressies available on Saturday, so will have to plan ahead a little. But this is on my short 'must go to soon' list now.

I know everyone keeps saying this too. We've been to the dining room several times now. I can't remember, does the bar include just the seats at the bar upstairs, or all of the sitting in the upstairs area? And I assume no reservations up there, huh? Does anyone remember if the seating upstairs include setbacks (i have a lousy back)? Thanks!

The bar has other seats- a long bench along the wall(with backs), and then some chairs and small tables, in addition to the bar.  We had drinks there, but no food, but I assume they serve food there.  No idea about a ressie, but I assume no.
