Duck Donuts - Outer Banks-Based Donut Chain Expanding to Multiple Virginia Locations

Recommended Posts

Arlnow.com reporting this  - so when will the parking garage be built there?  I do not know the brand - is this a good thing?

"Duck Donuts To Open Fairfax and Arlington Locations" by Tim Regan

It's a good thing this is "off to the side" by Ghin Na Rhee, but it's going to be a lot more popular than the dreary Baskin-Robbins, and will only add to the parking woes in Lee-Harrison Center.

I work in Herndon and someone had brought in some for a meeting.  At the end of the day when leftovers were brought to the kitchen I grabbed one of the day old donuts.  It was good.  Really good.  Or, if you look at my waistline you could say it was bad.  Very bad (for my waistline).

If it were closer, I would probably be in trouble.

We get them every summer in the OBX, and they are pretty damn good. I wondered, however, when I first heard they were moving up here (which I thought was brilliant) if they actually were good, or if they were yet another product super dependant on context. They are essentially made to order which I think helps a lot--what's worse than a stale donut?

I hope they do well, and maybe learn from Fractured Prune, which seemed to expand rapidly in the area with mediocre results.  I've had their donuts in Duck, NC a few times.  Hard to beat a hot donut rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

A hot cake donut, with dripping chocolate icing and peanuts on top... very good. If you wait too long, they can be revived on a hot car dashboard.

Most mornings have out-the-door lines at the Herndon spot, since they're made to order, but on a weekday the line-order-eat took about 15 minutes.

Learned the hard way two nights ago that this place closes on weeknights at 7pm.  If only there were magical devices where I could look up when places open and close before I burn most of a gallon of gasoline getting over there from where I was...

This is surprising to me. Duck Donuts has been a family tradition for the past 7 years. I love waking up and biking to Duck donuts with the kids, scarfing down a hot donut while staring out at the Currituck Sound. But I also always thought that it was purely a contextual thing, and that the donuts - and the wait- were made far better by the fact I was on vacation, with my family, and very happy.

i can see them being busy when they first open, but I'm skeptical that thisis sustainable. Then again, I have no explanation for Georgetown Cupcakes..

Agreed here. Going to Duck Donuts in Duck or Corolla with my kids still wearing their pajamas has made for treasured memories through the years. Not sure I get the same vibe in the Harrison Shopping Center.

Duck Donuts is really expanding quickly. I was going to include them in the neighborhood sections of the Virginia Dining Guide, but it would just be too much work to keep up with them, so they'll have to remain exclusively in the Multiple Locations Guide.

Everything tastes better in the Outer Banks, or at least it used to back when I was going on occasion 25 years ago - even mediocre, frozen, fried seafood on Ocracoke Island, out on a deck, downed with a plastic cup of ice-cold Bud, made you feel like you were living large. And is there anything more fun than throwing bread crumbs at the seagulls on the ferry? The Nationals should sign one of them and replace Ian Desmond.
