Buredo, Burrito-Sized Maki Rolls, Elongated Maki Cut in Half - Opening Several More Locations

Recommended Posts

Technically today is my Friday so when I saw the line for Buredo I decided to stick it out and take a little longer than I should for lunch.  The staff was very nice and was handing out free wasabi peas to all of the people waiting patiently in line.  I went with the Beatrix, which has yellow tail tuna and salmon sashimi, cucumbers, pickled napa cabage, green onion, 'tempura crunch' and unagi sauce.  The fish was good quality  - not Izakaya Seki or Sushi Capitol good - but not mediocre either.  The rest of the ingredients were fresh and the size was bigger than expected.  It cost almost $13 for finished product and I can't think of any other place in the neighborhood that you can get that amount of quality sushi for that price.  Hopefully the amusement park roller coaster-esque line will shorten once the initial novelty wears off.

The sushi burrito is basically an elongated maki roll that is cut in half.

Basically, a hybrid of the maki and the temaki.

The line was about 20 minutes long when I went today at 12:15, and longer when I left. I love the concept, although I don't think I'll go very often as I usually don't spend $12 on lunch.

The quality was decent. I don't know if this makes any sense, but to me it tasted exactly how I thought it would taste when I saw some preview pictures.

I ordered the Beatrix, which has both salmon and tuna. I think this resulted in a little too much raw fish per bite. I don't know if the salmon-only or tuna-only burritos are similarly portioned. I'll probably try the Crazy 88 with pork or Sofie with shrimp tempura (also pictured below) next time.

They also sell some specialty sodas, rice chips, wasabi peas, and cookies.

I went today. I thought it was ok, something to eat once and a while. It's closer than other "sushi" options and can cost less.

I was wondering how eating the large roll would be and it worked out well. So I'll be more willing to try the cheaper small sushi rolls at that automated place up past 14 and P.

I was dismayed that one of the two tuna portions had a huge amount of "gristle" in it so I had to take it out and peal the tuna meat from the lines of strong white membrane. Thus they need to cut their tuna better. I would have provided feedback but there is no contact information and I don't want to ruin their Twitter feed with a nasty photo.

The line is out the door and about 40 people deep right now. They're neighbors on my block, so I wish them the best of luck and truly hope that the initial excitement holds for months and years to come, but I don't understand this at all.

This.  Today, I walked by shaking my head and had a thoroughly delicious meal from the Sate Truck.

I tried Buredo today. I got the Hanzo roll (tuna). I rate it as ok. Not at all worth the ridiculous wait.

I'm just wondering when you guys are going to finally realize you're a cut above everyone else ...

(... why in the heck do you think I've kept this website going for over ten years?)

I suspect that, like you, Buredo is something I would enjoy on a semi-regular basis, with the amounts of sauce from the squirt bottles rather severely *curtailed* so my meal can be both tasty *and* healthy. But I'll be darned if I'm going to wait in line for what is essentially quick-serve temaki sushi. There is a mini-chain in San Fransisco called Sushirrito which was, I believe, the pioneer of this concept, and it is quite popular here, especially among people in their 20s.

And if anyone thinks I'm coming across as Grumpy Cat, Buredo looks like something I'm interested in, and even has the potential to be in Italic; you just won't see me waiting in line for it.

I walked by today at 12:30 and the line was completely inside, which is a significant reduction from when it opened because there's not too much space between the door and the ordering counter.

I was there about 1 PM within the last two weeks, and the line was inconsequential. I liked it, but upon reading your post it occurred to me that, though I've gone out for lunch multiple times since then, I haven't felt a strong need to go back. I'm sure I will, at some point, but I guess it ultimately didn't bowl me over.

OK, glad to know the short line wasn't a fluke today. I work nearby, and unless there was some noteworthy food truck outside, this would be the first place I'd head for a quick lunch if I was going out, because I want to try more of the menu. But I go out for lunch maybe once a month, if that.

I was there last week at prime time as well and there was virtually no line.  With the caveat that I have visited Tokyo twice in the past year and thus am ruined for any other form of sushi- I thought the sushi burrito was  kind of gross. The tuna was flaccid, the rice was tasteless, the whole thing was overwhelmed (as noted by the post above) in a sea of aoli. It was just a big, sad calorie torpedo.  However, the chocolate chip cookie with the rice krispies in it was pretty good.

The new location is on Connecticut just north of M, next to &pizza.  I've been to the Franklin Sq location twice and while its pretty tasty, i found the fatal flaw to be how messy it is. The nori falls apart after a few bites, rice goes everywhere, and sauce just seeps out. I suppose tortillas are the preferred wrap for burrito-sized/shaped meals for a reason!

Plus, you have to bring your own soy sauce and pickled ginger. :-(

I noticed a not yet open storefront at 1st and K, NE, today, and when I checked their website I saw they're opening four new locations:

  1. Atlas District (625 H Street, NE)
  2. NoMa (111 K Street, NE)
  3. Tenleytown (4235 Wisconsin Avenue, NW)
  4. Bethesda (Wildwood Shopping Center)

Although I keep noticing locations soon to open, I've yet to actually eat at this place.
