Claimed to be the oldest open-air fish market in the country (1805), pre-dating NYC's considerably larger (and still mainly wholesale) Fulton Fish Market (1822).

I have fond memories of driving down there on a Saturday afternoon in my dad's station wagon with no air conditioning.  We would always look for Clarence, he would go into a barge, pull out a bushel of live crabs, my dad would send him back for a different one.  They would haggle for 5 minutes, we would take them home and steam them, eat them in the back yard.  Great childhood memories.

I go there often, and I get some impeccable seafood there at reasonable prices. I hope whatever they do there, with all of that construction, allows it to emerge with as much character and quality as it has now.

We lived for several years in SW, less than a mile away from the fish market, and so went often. You could find great deals down there, and the jumbo lump crab meat was always cheaper there than at any supermarket.
