Here is the official website for the 2015 U.S. Open, running Aug 31 - Sep 13, 2015

Scores & Stats - Draws - Schedule - Players - Video & Photos - News - Event Guide - Social - Shop - Tickets

Do yourselves a favor: Even if you haven't traditionally been a huge tennis fan, try and get into the U.S. Open this year - it's a great tournament, and the players right now are as good as they will be for a long time into the future - the top players are getting older, and the chances you have to see them are growing smaller and smaller. These are halcyon times for tennis, and it's a good time to be getting into it as a spectator - imagine if you could tell your grandchildren that you watched Rod Laver beat Ken Rosewall. If anyone has any questions at all, no matter how rudimentary, either post them here, or send me a Private Message. I'll be happy to help you out in any way I can, and there's no such thing as a "stupid" question, I promise you - you can't possibly expect to know things if you've never been told them before.

This past week was the Qualifying Tournament & we were there for 3 of the 4 days. It's free & you get a chance to see up and coming players vying for several spots in the tournament while basically standing or sitting 10 feet from the court. You also have access to the practice sessions of the top players arriving early (Nadal this year). Bear that in mind for next year.

Just got back from Labor Day/anniversary weekend in NYC, and we went to the evening session in Arthur Ashe last night (one of my sports bucket list items) - so we got to see Djokovic and Bautista Agut battle it out for 4 sets.  It was really fun to watch - lots of great rallies.  While I like Djokovic, I really don't love his racket-smashing temper tantrums (even if the anger is self-directed) - but he was actually pretty funny in the post-match interview.  When Brad Gilbert asked him about it, he smiled and said something like, "I don't see any broken rackets, what are you talking about? :P

I think I'd like to go back and check out some of the day sessions and/or matches on smaller courts.  But the vibe of the night match really was exciting, and it was so much lovelier to watch in a cool evening breeze as opposed to the sweltering heat and sun.

Will be watching the rest on TV...definitely pumped for Federer vs. Isner tonight.

I hope for Federer's sake he isn't looking past Isner right now, the way The Tall Man has been playing of late - I believe he's cracked the Top 10.

Summer of 2010. Matt and I had gone to Babbo for their pasta-tasting menu the night before, and had a day to kill before taking a night flight to Dublin. It was something like 105 degrees, and the only respite we could find was downstairs in the Columbus Circle Shake Shack after going to the *lame* Natural History Museum (pre-renovation, and it was about as much fun as a bad day at the Weems-Botts Museum). We sat down there, grateful for air conditioning, for what must have been two hours - he was playing his Game Boy; I was watching Isner-Mahut in their historic Wimbledon match.

I wonder if there's any way that Mahut, after going up two sets to one, could have thought he had another 9 1/2 hours and 151 games to play, only to lose the match.

I watched the Nadal Fognini match Friday night in my hotel room, catching the end of the 4th and all of the 5th. Man that was some good tennis (even with Nadal fading). First time Nadal has lost a match in a major after winning the first two sets (plus he was up a break in the 3rd). His record now 151-1.

The scariest thing about this statistic is that Nadal has been up 2-0 in majors 152 times!

Anyone else sickened by ESPN's coverage, by it's unbridled adolatry of Serena Williams, by any refusal to even hint at the disparity in her body image against the sleek Eastern European tennis ladies, by anything other than shameless worship?

Innocent until proven guilty, and Serena is having a historic season. Even though she's having one of her best years ever, she's near the end of her career, and she's a bigger story than the rest of women's tennis combined right now. She has a very real chance at winning the first Grand Slam since Steffi Graf won it in 1988.

I'm on-record as saying Serena takes steroids, but I don't think for a moment that others don't, so in that regard, they're playing on a level field. This is, of course, all conjecture.

Speaking of body type... just ask Ron Swanson.

I'm sorry, but I find this comment at best offensive, and at worst racist. I debated all day whether to bother responding, but in the end it pissed me off too much. Don can cast his aspersions at her steroid use, but Serena has always been a muscular thick person. At least his comments aren't designed to say that there is an ideal look for women athletes that matter beyond results. They are ATHLETES. The biggest/baddest one wins. No matter if it's the NFL and 330 pound linemen or marathoners. What does her look have to do with anything? And the Eastern Euros are "sleek"? Did you look at Azarenka tonight?

And Jesus, Serena has a chance to win the Grand Slam. How many other people have done that? (And yes, I know the answer). There is a good reason to blow her image up.

Now that I'm done with that. I don't watch a lot of tennis, nor play it particularly well, but Federer just put on a master class. You don't need to know tennis well to recognize that.

I was very impressed with last night's performance. It was virtually flawless. I'm really hoping he can pull off another major this weekend.

With Federer in recent years, the reality is that he's aging (he's now 34, which has become ancient in pro tennis), and towards the end of major tournaments, either he gets physically drained, his competition gets better, or both (probably both). This has become a pattern, and his short match (6-3, 6-3, 6-1) against Richard Gasquet will not hurt his cause.

Federer often appears superb in the first week of majors, but then ends up losing a close one in the quarters, semis, or finals - this tournament is about his best shot at winning one more major, but he's going to have to get past Wawrinka and Djokovic, and that is no small feat - especially since Wawrinka is going to, at the minimum, push him - if he ends up beating Wawrinka and getting sucked into a long match with Djokovic, he's going to be in trouble.

Perhaps more historically, when's the last time there's been an all-Italian final at a major, particularly at the U.S. Open?

Well, there never was a last time because this will be the first-ever....

But now, Serena can go off to her rightful sports destination of NFL linebacker or Olympics heavyweight wrestling.

Leander Paes, a 42-year-old star doubles player from India, has won his ninth Grand Slam mixed doubles championship, leaving him only one behind Martina Navratilova for the all-time record.

Paes and another ageless wonder, 34-year-old Martina Hingis, have won three Grand Slam mixed doubles events this year, the first team to accomplish this since 1969, when Marty Riessen and Margaret Court pulled off the feat.

There is only one tennis player in the world with four Grand Slam championship trophies in 2015, and that player is Martina Hingis.

I really love watching Paes play & I'm definitely a Hingis fan as well. However, without taking anything away from their wins against a couple of good teams in the semi's and finals, did you look at their draw? Basically, they played two matches for the championship.  It would have meant more to me if they didn't get walkovers from Bouchard/Kyrgios (unavoidable, unfortunately) & then from Halep/Tecau.  Just sayin'.

I just looked; I hadn't realized they had two walkovers.

The doubles finals look like a blast from the past!

Men's: Michael Chang and Todd Martin vs. Pat Cash and Mark Philippoussous

Women's: Martina Hingis going for her 5th Grand Slam championship of 2015.

Of note: The Junior Boys' singles finalists are both from the USA.

Please also note I began a separate thread on Wheelchair Tennis - nothing would make me happier than if we became a go-to resource on the sport. If we can get some wheelchair athletes on here, I promise I will do whatever I can to promote the sport (I am an ex-tournament tennis player).
