Uber to Brookland!

Nothing else?

I think Irving Street is your only exit from WHC, and it's all quasi-highway from what I remember. The last time I was there, I went east and drove to Brookland once, then southeast to H St. Corridor another time; I've never tried to go west, but you'll end up in Columbia Heights in about a mile if I recall (isn't the Target on Irving and 13th?) - and in between is a four-lane, divided road and parkland off to the sides. Now, this is the *North* entrance; I don't even know if there is a South entrance - there's some historical graveyard around there that prevents you from driving, and the Langdon golf course is around there, too. You can tell I'm reaching the limits of my WHC knowledge - it is a sprawling, massive complex that is about the closest thing to a genuine eyesore you'll find in the city.

What are you going to do? I hate seeing threads like this unanswered.

I'm hoping to compile a list to pass along to my relatives; a cousin is going to be there for weeks at least, and a lot family want to come visit.  First question they ask me, of course, is "where can I get some lunch?"  Also, hoping to bring carry out to the cousin once she stabilizes and can eat a wider range of food.

There is a south entrance, and the whole area is ringed by highways; it's a bit of a nightmare getting in and out, on foot or by car.

Rieux, thanks for the suggestions.

I'd add, that slightly farther away, on Mt. Pleasant St. and Irving is Each Peach market, which has amazing sandwiches and side salads for take away lunch.  The Dude sandwich, in particular, is great, and should get more acclaim on this board.  They also have a great selection of pastries, drinks, etc.

Are you coming from Montgomery County?

H St. NE is surprisingly close to WHC - the first time I ever went to Sally's Middle Name, I had been there first.

Bullfrog Bagels, their house-made corned beef, and some cream cheese, make a really nice, long-lasting hospital package.

Rieux is correct - east Columbia Heights (11th Street, if I recall) is the closest thing, and it's not walkable. (I'm not looking at Google maps, and probably should, but I think Columbia Heights, to the west, is the closest and has the most options).

Johnny's Half Shell is also surprisingly close. Don't forget Menomalé.

The best bet may be to chart out a course from where people are coming from, and to figure out something along the way. Realistically, leaving, going to un-park your car, and going somewhere, is an hour round-trip. It all depends upon the nature of the stay.

The more information you can give, the more people can help. Where will people be coming from? Will they be staying on the hospital floor? Or just visiting? How many hours per day will they be there?

Keep pumping us with information, and we'll be able to help you (you're not so bad yourself in terms of geographical knowledge).

Just a couple of notes - leaving, hitting any of the places in Columbia Heights or Mt. Pleasant for take out, and heading back could take as little as a half hour depending on traffic (likely light at lunch time and dinner time) and assuming you call in an order ahead of time.

I wouldn't walk anywhere in that general area, personally.  The roads are terrible, and the neighborhoods surrounding the hospital can be dicey, especially for an out-of-towner.  It's fine once you get west of Sherman.

Yes, but walking from the rooms, to the parking lot, and driving down, can take 15 minutes each way, each time you do it (I promise I'm not trying to argue; just trying to clarify my claim of an hour which does, on the surface, seem like a very long time). It can be quite a hike at WHC to/from the parking lots and exits.

You may want to call the information desk, and see if any food trucks ever show up there. It's a long-shot, but might be worth one look. More importantly, as I was typing that last sentence, one word popped into my mind: Delivery! The information desk (whatever the hell an "information desk" is - I'm throwing the term around like it's a hotel concierge), may have a list of restaurants that deliver - if they have a long-term stay ward, the nurses will know. Hospitals are sometimes easy on delivery cars with flashers on, as long as they aren't blocking ambulance routes.
