Dining in Bowie

Recommended Posts

Well, Jerry's Seafood has nudged out Rip's Country Inn as #1 in Bowie.

Of course we only have two Bowie restaurants in our Dining Guide.

Damn, I would give my eye teeth to have more Prince George's County posts. Todd, why don't you get active here and promote your home turf? Because we're "competitors?" Meh. We aren't.

There's a sister restaurant to Pasta Plus there that could quite likely be in Italic. Anyone been? Is it still open?

Sigh ... our strengths are so strong; our weaknesses are so weak.

It was really odd putting Jerry's under the "Bowie" section of the Maryland Dining Guide.

Looks like the sister restaurant to Pasta Plus, Mare e Monte, closed awhile ago.

When I lived in Crofton (just over the Anne Arundel County line from Bowie) I used to go to TJ Elliott's, which is owned by the same people who own the original Ledo's in College Park (the Marcos family). They make pizza using the original Ledo's recipe. I don't think I ever had anything there other than pizza, but I used to enjoy it. The rest of the menu looked like standard Italian fare.

I heard about a bakery in Bowie that was supposed to be excellent, The Cakery, but I never had an opportunity to try it.

Other than those two places I can't think of anywhere else notable in Bowie.

Elsewhere in PG County I used to go to the Italian Inn in Landover Hills (I'm not finding a good site to link to). Again, I mainly went for the pizza, also Ledo's-style, which I used to enjoy. Again, the rest of the menu looked like standard Italian fare. I'm from Rhode Island, and both TJ Elliott's and the Italian Inn reminded me of the mom and pop Italian joints that are legion there.

ETA: I can't believe I never went to Jerry's during the 2 years I lived in Crofton! I live in Silver Spring now, so I can still go, but it used to be right down the street.

Yes, Mare e Monte - I would have *never* recalled that one without searching. Thank you! Any idea when it closed? For all the years that I lived in Laurel (and made a weekly trek to Bowie Raquet Club (now Sport Fit Bowie) to play with the legendary Bill Moldoch (just in case he stumbles across this :))), I never made it there.

We have a Dining in Crofton thread in the Baltimore and Annapolis Forum.

You can still go to Jerry's, but if you haven't had the crab-stuffed rockfish at Crisfield, there's no need. And if you haven't had that dish, shame on you! It's one of the very greatest seafood dishes in DC, even if you could have gotten the *exact* same dish 70 years ago (same plates and utensils and everything)! It isn't cheap - it's probably in the low $30s if you get it stuffed with lump crabmeat, but it's money *well-spent*, with a cup of bisque (which you also much get), and a few squirts of their voodoo sauce (an absolute *must* to liven up that fish dish - it's a perfect sauce for it), and the draft beers there are ridiculously inexpensive. Just trust me and go if you haven't - the bar is a wonderful place to be.

I started to put in these links after writing the text, but I have to stop now. OH MY GOD.

I found a thread from 2008 in which someone said Mare e Monte closed 3-4 years before then, so it seems it's been a while.

I'm very ashamed to say I've never had the crab-stuffed rockfish at Crisfield. I've never even been to Crisfield. I've been aware of it for awhile and knew it had been around forever, but I wasn't sure if it was still worth visiting until I started poking around here and saw that you recommended some dishes. It's now been on my to-do list for a couple of months, but I haven't made it there yet.

Very sorry about your friend.

The Old Bowie Town Grille has a beloved townie bar feel to it.  The food is mostly pub grub-style.  The beer list is main stream.  But when the Thursday night open blues jam kicks up you'll hear some damn good local musicians.  Big Boy Little opens with an hour long sets and then musicians start rotating in.  Last night probably 25 musicians showed up.  At one point my friend and I and the bartender were the only non-musicians in the room.  Great to see.

Live music several nights a week.  As my friend said: Live music and Guinness on tap, what's not to like.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a late brunch/early lunch spot in or near Bowie for tomorrow? Meeting a friend who is traveling from her hotel in Dupont to Crownsville and thought Bowie might be a convenient spot to meet (I live in Laurel). Trying to avoid her having to do much traveling off the highway while not having to drive super far myself. Appreciate any suggestions.

ETA: If I can't come up with anything better I see there's a First Watch right off of 50. Not exactly fine dining, but I could live with that.
