Metrorail suspending service from 11PM Friday through entire weekend.
Metrobus suspending service from 5PM Friday through entire weekend.

Silver Spring: The Classics says they intend to stay open through the storm. [awkward plural/singular usage going on here...mebbe I should pretend to use British English and treat a company as a plural object]

Frederick: Family Meal to remain open as usual.

Frederick: Volt open Friday 5-close, Sat-Sun 11:30-close.  Normal closing time is 9:30.  If that remains so, then in effect this means they're staying open through their usual brunch/dinner closing.  Special snowstorm prix fixe menu available...unclear from their e-mail whether or not this preempts their normal menu.

Per the Washington Post's live blog on the storm, among restaurants open for those close enough to get there safely are Maketto on H St., NE, and the Ted's Bulletin on 14th St., NW (don't know about other locations).  There is also a mention of the So Others Might Eat dining room, which is open for breakfast and lunch all weekend.

How does a restaurant stay open? Do the staff all live within walking distance? Do they crash at the restaurant?

My guess discounted hotel rooms and possibly trade w/ the hotels. Btw north Arlington has a lot of restaurants open... All near hi rise residential areas

In the case of Maketto, the pastry chef the Post mentioned spent last night with Erik Bruner-Yang and his family, a few blocks from the restaurant.  Sometimes, people get put up in hotels.  One place I know of that's open, some employees live a short walking distance away and others have places to crash near the restaurant.  Neighborhood restaurants that draw their staff from the neighborhood have an advantage here.

Maketto has closed for the day. They're opening tomorrow morning at 9 AM.

The Washington City Paper and the Washington Post had articles about how certain restaurant and other workers are getting to work.

The Washington City Paper and the Washington Post had articles about how certain restaurant and other workers are getting to work.

Chatted with a staffer at Fireworks/Arlington/Courthouse.  They were open during the entire snow mess.  Fireworks had employees at near and adjacent hotels plus employees made arrangements with friends nearby.  She said that Four Courts and Ragtime in Courthouse did the same, and I know Rhodeside in Roslyn was open and is owned by the same group that owns Ragtime  so they must have done the same.  She also referenced 3 places in Ballston that all housed staff in a Ballston hotel.  All these staffers have worked with one another at one place or another so they know what is going on at different bars and restaurants in the area.

BTW:  Per her comments Fireworks was very busy on Saturday.  Hey if you are stuck in your place during a snow storm, stomp thru the snow to visit your neighborhood hangout.  They'll help you feel comfortable.
