edenman
I was up in Baltimore this past weekend and grabbed a late lunch at Rub (They insist on capitalizing the entire word, but I will refrain from doing so). Although it has all the trappings of a chain, it's not, and the BBQ isn't bad at all. Got the two-meat plate with Brisket and Ribs...the Brisket was the winner, but the ribs weren't bad, just not great. For $13, the two-meat plate came with your choice of two sides: I got the corn pudding (excellent texture, nice and spicy) and the macaroni and cheese (maybe not the best choice, but not bad).Anybody else been here and have thoughts? If I was back up in the area I'd probably stop by, but other BBQ recommendations in B-more are always welcome.
1000yregg
I agree with you that the brisket is pretty good. The chicken is also pretty tasty. I actually didn't like any of their side dishes- I thought that they were all pretty bland. For ribs, even though I can walk to Rub from where I live, I would rather drive to the county to Andy Nelson's BBQ.
cjsadler
This somewhat new place is at the far eastern end of Light Street in what I think is still Federal Hill, and is owned by the same guy that started Blue Agave. It's on a somewhat sketchy stretch of blocks and Rub might be the first sign of gentrification of this area. The bbq was ok, but you're far better off venturing out to Andy Nelson's or Pulaski Highway for some pit beef. The sides were good though-- nice corn pudding, sweet potato fries and green beans with bacon.
jparrott
Corn pudding, green beans, and sausage all excellent. Brisket, just meh. Like ribs, a difficult BBQ meat to hold for service. Spongy, not particularly smoky, particularly not that dark-smoke-burnt-vanilla and crust of Lockhart or Luling-style Texas Q.
csirwillis
Went to RUB on Sunday July 4th for a birthday dinner and had the pick 3. Great local hangout and great prices but the they need to work on their sides. Mac and cheese was dry and potato salad was not cooked all the way. Ribs were great and the chicken was outstanding, but the brisket could use some work. All in all it was a nice place and I will go back for the chicken and ribs. bluepig1
Brisket's ok but vastly improved when you ask for a "fatty cut". As far as sides go - I'm usually a sweet potato fries (very good) or creamed spinach (not your usual steakhouse-style version - a little thicker/more solid as it's made with cream cheese). DonRocks
Thanks to JDawgBBall9's posts today about some Baltimore restaurants, I noticed that some restaurants are listed (properly listed) as "closed" in the Baltimore Dining Guide without any "final" posts as to why they closed. You all know how anal I am about continence. (can you tell I've been working my way through "All In The Family?" ), so I may stick some information into the threads, even though places have been closed for years. If anyone finds this annoying (and I can understand why they might), there's a "Mark Forum As Read" button on the main page of the website (on the left of the forum name - it's the little speech balloon with quote marks inside it). If you click it, everything in the forum will be marked as having been read, and it will go from "dark blue" to "pale blue." Be careful, though, because once you do this, you can't undo it. I'm not going to methodically go through all closed restaurants, but if I notice any, and have time, I'll try and make the posts for closure. And thanks again to JDawg for keeping things here current. --- From Jul 25, 2011: "Transformers: Rub is Closed but will Keep Rolling" by Richard Gorelick on baltimoresun.com Note that the article says Rub will take its smoker and operate in the parking lot of Miguel's Cocina y Cantina, and I don't know how long it operated there, but Miguel's closed earlier this summer as well.
