  1. Cheers to our fearless leader Don Rocks on his birthday!
  2. Oh, how I wish I read this or remembered reading it! I accidentally watched the Director’s Cut last week, thinking it was the original theater release. How I wish I hadn’t! I have no love for Harvey Weinstein as a human being, but as an editor, his work on this film transformed Tornatore’s vision from mediocrity into a classic. I can’t unsee the extended version, but I wish I could.
  3. To Don Rocks, whose 61st trip around the sun began early this morning watching shooting stars from a balcony with me. My shooting star—the sweetest man I know—deserves nothing less than a meteor shower in his honor! Cheers to you and our year ahead!
  4. It was hands-down the best scallop dish I have had in a very long time. I can't wait to go back and order it again.
  5. We had the bouillabaisse last night to go, along with Michel's hazelnut bar for dessert. Both were outstanding. The bouillabaisse is the perfect take-out dish that reheats well at home.
  6. We are heading to Hilton Head in August. Based on this thread, I think Charlie LE’toile Vert might be the best place to celebrate my sweetheart’s birthday while we are there. Anyone been there lately? Any other thoughts? We will be there four nights, so suggestions for other meals are welcome as well.
  7. I am happy with Google Chrome, YouTube TV, Netflix and Amazon Prime. Didn’t need to upgrade internet. Much cheaper than cable.
  8. I second this suggestion. I live in South Arlington, and I think this is one of the best restaurants in our neighborhood.
  9. My sweetheart treated me to a wonderful take-out Valentine’s Day meal from Tail-Up Goat. Four courses, plus an amuse bouche, dessert, and a couple of bonus sweets. It was all delicious, but the standouts were: the charred octopus salad, with panelle, sorrel, pickled mustard seeds and sofrito, and the squab, with Madeira jus, black truffle, cabbage and sweet potato gratin. The dessert, a chocolate and clementine torte, nasturtium flowers and Aleppo, was lovely and delectable. We also enjoyed two delightful, little “my heart is in your hands” apple pies. There was so much food, we wound up enjoying half of it the next day. We have shared many memorable carry-out meals since the pandemic struck, but this one stands apart from most.
  10. Tonight we are enjoying poke. The delicious tuna was delivered by Georgetown Butcher. They have fantastic fish there. Last night we enjoyed their halibut, pan-seared, with a butter, caper and lemon sauce, on mashed Yukon gold potatoes.
  11. Just bought some Ice Cream Jubilee “Sweet Cream and Honey” ice cream at Whole Foods. It is quite good, and not as expensive as some of the other premium ice cream brands.
  12. Why mess with perfection? Our most recent pint of Brown Butter Passionfruit Ice Cream had Chocowaffle instead of Chocolate. While this ice cream is still incredibly delicious, this change is not an improvement. I prefer the original contrast of dark chocolate with passionfruit instead of these sweeter waffle bits.
  13. I couldn’t believe how quickly a 14 pound bird cooked! I made my personal-best gravy with the giblets.
  14. Apparently a synonym is gewgaw. Who knew?
  15. I didn't think I could love any dessert more than Happy Gyro's Olive Oil Gelato and Cocoa Crumble until their Basque Cheesecake came along. Now both of these have been topped. Happy Gyro's Brown Butter Ice Cream with Passionfruit and Chocolate takes frozen dessert to a whole new level. I can't think of an ice cream I have enjoyed more. Creamy, delicious and texturally interesting. This one is a winner.
  16. If it is on the menu, treat yourself to Happy Gyro's Basque cheesecake. I am not crazy about traditional cheesecake, and I had never had Basque cheesecake before, but I certainly will order it again. The outside was deliciously caramelized, while the inside was oh so creamy. After admiring the beautiful burnt exterior, I drizzled the berry sauce on top. I thought nothing could top Happy Gyro's gelato, but this is just as good, if not better.
  17. Just when I thought their pizzas couldn't get any better, we ordered this week's pie featuring fresh peaches, olives, salami and red onions. It was fantastic! Ours had a tomato vodka sauce that I really enjoyed. It also was available with a creamy garlic sauce. As always, the crust was perfect. I also loved their new dessert offering--a goat cheese gelato with blackberry and shortbread. Heavenly.
  18. Agreed. Ina's are always wonderful, but some of Martha's are "meh."
  19. I’m raising a glass of champagne to (and with) the sweetest man I’ve ever known. Happy birthday, DonRocks!
  20. I recently re-watched this film, and shortly after, "Suspicion." The former held up much better for a second viewing than the latter. I loved "Rebecca" the second time around, but Suspicion seemed dull, and the contrived ending annoyed me. I had no idea Mrs. Danvers was the inspiration for Cloris Leachman's character in "Young Frankenstein." Having recently watched the 1931 version of "Frankenstein," and then "Rebecca," it was great fun viewing this 1974 comedy again, which I hadn't seen since I was still in elementary school.
  21. Scallops with fennel grenobloise, and dark-chocolate-dipped strawberries and bananas and a black plum for dessert.
  22. We had Kinship's "Date Night" menu over the weekend. It was pricey, but we got our Friday and Saturday nights' dinners out of it, plus a Sunday snack! It even came with a candle, which I almost didn't use (until I remembered where I put my taper-candle holder when I moved here three years ago). The food was fabulous, and it even came with plating/reheating instructions. It made the weekend feel like a weekend, for a change!
