  1. Flipping through Calvert Woodley's fall wine sale catalog, I happened upon this... Asked what one of his most memorable wine and food pairing experiences was, Ziebold took us back to 1998 in Paris, when he was just 26 years old. He ordered a leek and foie gras terrine with truffles. He ordered a glass of Sauternes, knowing that it is a classic pairing with foie gras. “The Sommelier actually talked me into doing a Riesling with it and it was really very savory because of the leeks and the truffles, and it was an aged Riesling so a little bit of that petrol worked much better with the dish.” It was one of the first experiences that opened his mind to how important a pairing can be to a dish.
  2. I had lunch at the Italian Store today, and it reminded me of what seemed like a very brief time that Pupatella was selling frozen pizza there. They definitely have not available there for awhile now. Does anyone know if they are still selling them, or do they just not sell them through Italian Store anymore?
  3. I have to say I was concerned when I saw the location. This is prime expense account territory. But I will probably end up going anyway at least once to taste the magic.
  4. Great write-up! I remember when this was on my "must-go-next" list until life intervened and I never ended up getting there. Some of those pictures remind me of the slide shows I've seen on abandoned places.
  5. I'm not sure why I didn't notice this before, because I drive by here a lot, but Sur La Place has apparently been closed since Jan 1. http://www.surlaplaceindc.com/ In the meantime, Et Voila down the street has expanded.
  6. I've only ever seen it at the DC location.
  7. Looks like your mind's made up, but Jaleo has a sea urchin dish that I found an excellent introduction. I agree that there is a big difference between East and West Coast uni--much prefer West Coast.
  8. I actually stopped in here last Friday night. Menu had changed significantly, but all the old favorites like the duck confit were gone. Bartender/server I talked to said their clientele had been pretty receptive to the changes but I guess not enough were. The absence of Tim Ma affected this place A LOT. I really loved this place when it opened. I unfortunately agree that Arlington is rapidly becoming a wasteland of dining destinations, although I have to try Ambar.
  9. As a local, I've been here many times with my wife. Since she was out with friends, I took my 10 year old son here tonight. Glad to see a good crowd in August. Split crab arancini and had the bacon cheeseburger, which hit the spot. My diminutive partner had the "plat du jour", lasagna, which he declared the best he's ever had. What they do well they do better than any of the competition in the surrounding area. Whoever is lamenting the downfall of Clarendon dining needs to remember this little stretch with Artisan Confections and Screwtop as well.
