  1. had an impromptu dinner in the bar area tonight. co-worker from out of town wanted good food, so a friend and I decided to take her to corduroy. I had the venison off the main menu, which was out of this world. It was perfectly paired with green beans and chestnut puree. My friend had the pasta off the bar menu which is delicious and hearty. The co-worker went with the roast chicken. What came was a perfectly cooked bird. For whatever reason, she barely touched it. Rissa somehow found out and came over to see if everything was ok. Even after being reassured by the co-worker that the everything was ok, Rissa removed the chicken from the bill, even under my protest. A class move, and very appreciated by me if not by the co-worker. I actually felt a bit embarrassed. As for drinks I had two glasses of the Thunder Mountain, which was a nice pairing for the venison. Friend with the pasta had 2 of the ale on tap. All in all, another wonderful, solid meal. -j
  2. Enjoyed dinner in the bar area Saturday night. Friend and I started with the gnocchi and soup of the day. Gnocchi were alright. Light and airy but the ragu was a little lacking. The soup, however, was intense. Quite possibly the best minestrone I've ever had. $10 is a bit pricy for soup though. Both my friend and I had the burger. Fantastic as usual. Brought in a 2000 Newton Unfiltered Merlot. Went perfectly with the dishes, and the $20 corkage isn't that bad. -j
  3. stopped in at 5:30 on sunday for dinner with a friend. Friend started with the chicken crepe, which was delicious. I had the soup of the day which was chicken and vegetable. It was good not great, but hit the spot on such a blustery day. Friend had the lasagna and I the lobster & shrimp pasta. Lasagna as always was phenomenal. My lobster and shrimp pasta was alright, but definitely wasn't a stand-out. In retrospect I wish I had gone for the venison. Enjoyed the wine madness special and had a nice russian river valley pinot noir. Quite tasty. Another solid meal at one of my favorite spots. -joe ps - Dean et al... please bring the olive oil poached octopus w/ chickpeas and sun dried tomato vinaigrette back at some future point. To date that dish haunts my dreams. It was transcendent!
  4. #8 "The BJ" aka Garlic Sausage and a trip "Uptown" for $2 = $8.36 for a sausage. Was not overly impressed with the sausage itself. It was a little dry, on the small side, and lacking any substantial garlic flavor or overall "oomph" which belied it's description. I'm going to wait for more people to go and spend $ experimenting before I venture back. However, there was quite a crowd for such crappy weather, and I'm sure they'll do good business after hours as others have suggested. As for the "kobe" beef hot dog - The only time I've ever spent $20 on a sausage was @ the old homestead in nyc, and even then it was on the clients dime. However, truth be told, it was probably one of the best hot dogs I've ever had, although I would chalk that up to the "kobe" chili and wasabi sauce it was served with, and not the "kobe" dog all by itself.
  5. Went to Vidalia with 3 friends. - Due to unforeseen circumstance one of the four was going to be late. 20 minutes late at the least, which was imparted 10 minutes before reservation. The host, and then our waitress could not have been more understandable. I'm not a newbie, so I offered for us to sit at the bar and then perhaps eat there, etc.. and was surprised as we were promptly ushered to our four top. We were allowed to leisurely order a glass of wine and await our late compatriot. Class act. - Apps were all delicious and well received. I had the warm frisee salad, which was tasteful and pleasantly light enough with the ham to allow it to set a nice tone to the opening salvo. Tasting of the rabbit sausage and yellowfoot mushroom risotto my friend ordered resulted in a sensory override. The risotto was out of this world. If served on it's own, it would warrant an entree. Two other friends reported happiness with their rabbit sausage and the winter market salad. - 2 friends entertained the roast chicken with dumplings, which to tastings, poking, and most importantly late and blatant proddings from all four of us were delicious. Juicy, succulent, you know the rest. I, as well as my lackadaisical other friend both had the pork charcutiere. I found the "smoked collar" to be the most intriguing piece of meat. Both in the variety of consistency and the disparity of taste attributed to each facet of it. The loin was excellent, mildy seasoned, and unfortunately was over-shadowed by the sauerkraut and pickled brine sauce. The surry sausage was like our shadow government representatives: there for show, but lacking in real expressive power. - Desserts ( of which I'm not a fan so excuse the lack of expressiveness ) were: 2x black out cake which was mediocre at best. 1x Warm Apple and Raisin Crisp which was the table favorite. Perfectly prepared with the grapes retaining a nice firm texture. 1x Lady Apple and Sweet Onion "Tatin" which was the 2nd favorite, and, including onion, our table longshot. Boy were we glad to be proven wrong. Seriously. Try it. - Wine: I had two delicious glasses of the riesling by the glass. As a rule, started at Bouley in NYC, I only entertain riesling's if they're "trocken." Well, whatever the glass is on their by the glass menu is absolutely fantastic. Friends tried the grenache, which was equally delicious, the red blend which reminded us of a nera d'avolo but wasn't, and the italian at the top of the red by the glass list ( sorry that I can't recall ). Point of note is that Vidalia is graciously serving the 20 under 7 by 7 during all of restaurant week, so don't be afraid to experiment. All in all, an enjoyed experience all around. Best, Joe (sorry if this was long winded )
  6. hmm... I've had them @ corduroy.... might go with that then.... ps - ask clayrae pps- recovering corduroy addict -joe
  7. Long time lurker and nyc transplant in search of the DC's best steak frites. It's a good friends birthday and unfortunately he's not a foodie. ( Shock and awe, I know ). Two of his food groups being steak and french fries, I figure I'd treat him to the best steak frites this city has to offer. My only lament is not knowing where this dish lies here in DC. So, I throw myself on the mercy of DR.com and look forward to the responses. PS - I had originally planned on taking him to NYC for the kobe beef hot dog @ old homestead ( hot dogs being his mainstay food group ), but they've removed it from the menu in favor of a kobe burger. Heresy! best, Joe
