  1. Rehoboth For breakfast, try the Crystal Restaurant (620 Rehoboth Ave.) for huge omelets, pancakes, scrapple & egg sandwiches (a locals favorite!), etc. There is usually a line, but the service is fast. And, no, it is nothing like the Crystal City Restaurant... Another option is Oby Lee (722 Rehoboth Ave.). They roast their own coffee beans onsite, and have a nice assortment of homemade quiches, and pastries of all kinds. They also have wireless internet access, I think. Other recommendations: Nicola's pizza - their version of a stromboli, the Nic-a-boli, is legendary. Fish On - located north of Rehoboth, in Lewes, Fish On has nicely-executed seafood dishes that are reasonably priced. Interesting wine list too. For greasy-good beach food, you can't go wrong with Gus & Gus and Louie's.
  2. I just discovered an incredible wine deal at Safeway that I thought I'd share... They are running a wine special through tomorrow (8/7/07) where you buy 1 bottle and get a second one for 10 cents. The deal is only good on selected wines (Beringer, Chateau St. Jean, Simi, and others), however. Here's the best part -- in the store, they have a big poster & balloons to promote the sale. It clearly reads that the sale is only good on the six wines pictured on the poster. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the Chateau St. Jean "Cinq Cepages" was one of the wines pictured!! This was the Wine Spectator Wine of the Year a few years ago, and its current retail price (at Safeway) is $91.99 per bottle (2002 vintage). So, I grabbed 2 bottles and headed to the express lane... Not surprisingly, the cashier made a few comments about expensive wine, and, predictably, they did not ring up at the advertised price. They each rang up at $69.99 on sale - not a bad price, but not what I was looking for. SO, the store manager came over and when I showed her the sign, she refunded me the difference without any pushback at all!! 2 bottles of 2002 Cinq Cepages for $73.46 (including tax) is what I call a good deal! This was at the Kingstowne Safeway, so your mileage may vary at other locations.
  3. I also like it as a finishing touch to roasted winter squash soups, or corn soups/purees. Also in pan sauces for beef.
  4. My only recommendation is to buy larger than you think you need. It's amazing how quickly they fill up! IWA sells a large variety of wine storage options from small 24-bottle countertop models to custom-designed rooms. http://www.iwawine.com Note: if you do plan to order something that they sell, give Frank's Union Wine Mart in Delaware a call. I've purchased 2 wine cellars from them and they offer (or at least they did at one time) a 15% discount on anything IWA sells if you order it through them. Your order will be drop shipped to your house, so it really isn't inconvenient at all. http://www.frankswine.com/accessories.htm
  5. It's called "El Grande" and it has been open for about 2 weeks. The place is indeed large and has a wide variety of latin & asian products. Produce is very nice, clean, and well-organized. As of Sunday, they were running some crazy specials too -- limes 20/$1 (not a typo), eggs $0.01/dozen (yes, they are from chickens; no, they didn't give me bird flu), etc. Lots of (seemingly) fresh seafood too -- some live in tanks, many others on ice. Much better than the GrandMart on Little River Tpke! The parking lot is not nearly large enough, so bring some patience with you if you go...

    Orzo

I made a good (and easy) orzo dish this weekend... You toss hot cooked orzo with diced ham, sliced green onions, 6 ounces of goat cheese, and 3/4 c. of pasta cooking water. Place in a casserole dish and broil until the top browns slightly.
  7. There's nothing preventing you from using them multiple times, unless you're there so often that they start to recognize you... I doubt that their computers maintain a list of credit card numbers and associate them with whether or not you've used the coupon. Besides, I imagine that they're still making plenty of money on our purchases, even with the 20% off!
  8. I suppose you could take one of those cheap flexible cutting boards (get them at the dollar store) and cut yourself a template to fit your soup bowl. Then pour soup on either side and remove the template. You could also curve it into an "S" shape for a yin-yang design. Might be nice with asian-spiced soups...
  9. Georgetown I ate there once, out of curiousity. It's definitely authentic (all of the employees were clearly latinos) and I think I was the only gringo in the place. Food was nothing special, unfortunately, given the relatively large population of latinos who live in and around Georgetown.
  10. I had no problem using it in the Alexandria store on Saturday. The guy in front of me had one too! Incidentally, all of the Capogiro gelato was gone. The cashier cashier caught me a bit off guard when she asked, "what kind of questions were in the survey?" "Umm, err, you know, the usual questions asking about my shopping preferences" was the best that I could come up with....
  11. We were having some friends join us for dinner on a Saturday & I planned to make creme brulee for dessert. In order to allow time for the custard to chill in the fridge, I decided that the best plan was to bake the custards Friday evening. After a long day of work, dinner, and clean up, I didn't get started on the creme brulee until late in the evening. Everything was going according to plan -- I cooked the custard, ladeled it into ramekins, preheated the oven to 250 degrees, and prepared the water bath. My wife went to bed early and I said, "I'll just finish up the creme brulee and then I'll hit the sack." Everything went into the oven around 10PM and I set the timer for 50 minutes (or something like that). I then plopped down on the couch to watch TV until the custards were finished baking. The rest of the story is fuzzy... At some point, I fell asleep on the couch. When I eventually woke up, I clumsily turned off the TV, turned off the lights, and staggered back to bed. The next thing I remember is suddenly waking up at around 7:30 AM, upon hearing the sounds of dishes being washed. "OH FUCK -- THE CREME BRULEE!!!" As I cautiously entered the kitchen, my wife had just finished cleaning up the last of the hard, black, custard hockey pucks that I had made... IIRC, no actual words were exchanged at first. Instead, we both just burst into laughter until we could hardly breathe. I will never live that down.
  12. I think that Trader Joe's sells that brand of blood orange juice.

  14. I've tried all of the 2-Buck-Chuck wines, and I would compare them (quality-wise) to what you would get if you went to Red Lobster and ordered a glass of the "house" wine. The chardonnay is particularly awful. I'll use the reds to make sangria sometimes, but that's about it.
  15. When I get coffee from WF, I still do the double-cup move. Those cardboard sleeves get hung up in my car's cupholders, and it drives me insane. I also hoard paper napkins in my desk drawer but, since I eventually use them for their intended purpose, I don't feel too guilty about it.
