  1. Are you referring to White Duck Taco, by chance? Jianna is definitely one of our better restaurants. Glad you liked it.
  2. Tanpopo has apparently reopened after the renovation. It has been a while since our last visit around a year ago (since we now live in Greenville, SC). We decided to stop by for lunch on our way out of town. The menu is quite different than before, and I'm not a fan of the changes. We didn't really care for the sushi today, but the ramen was still excellent. Just a quick review as we are continuing our 3-week trip up to New England.
  3. Hi all! I've been living in Greenville for 8 months now and love it. We are doing our best to check out all of the local restaurants. It has really become a great foodie spot. Just wanted to offer advice to anyone who might be visiting. Post here if you're looking for recommendations and I will do my best to respond. FYI, the aforementioned High Cotton isn't around any longer. Some of my favorite places include Soby's (especially their Sunday brunch), Larkins on the River, Bacon Brothers, Biscuit Head, Mekong, American Grocery, Sidewall Pizza, Smoke on the Water and Henry's Smokehouse. There are many other good places. Come for a visit!
  4. While driving down Columbia Pike today I noticed that Maruko is no more. The place is shuttered and the signs are gone. Sad to see this place go but I had not been there in quite a while.
  5. Big change to report. Caribbean Plate is under new ownership. The new owner is the Muffin Man from Maryland (La Plata? Lanham?). ( He was very nice.) The menu is totally different - more Jamaican offerings. No more saltenas. No more black bean soup. The owner said he plans to add his famous muffins to the menu,
  6. I dined at the new Dama location in Annandale earlier this week. I was really happy that they were opening, although I am quite content with Enat just down the road. Unfortunately, although the service was good the food was not. Everything was extremely salty and the injera was served cold. I wanted to love this place but I doubt I will be back to give it another try unless you all convince me it has improved. FWIW, I ordered the vegetarian platter and every dish except for the salad was both salty and overly-pureed. Oh well. It was worth a try.
  7. They have them at Wegmans. My real estate agent had me pick them up for her. They were in the case with the hot dogs, not in the deli case or the case with the hot dogs across from the deli case. It was confusing.
  8. We have been taking our now 2.5 year old here since he was a baby. It really depends on what the little guy likes/will eat. We like to stick to the Szechuan menu but there is no reason you couldn't order him something from the American-Chinese menu. If you want him to eat what you eat, off the top of my head, I would think he might enjoy the Chengdu Zhongs dumplings or the Yang Zhou (sp?) fried rice (made with house-made bacon/pork belly). Another not-too-spicy option is the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. My little guy now eats the stuffed pepper chicken (on the specials board in Chinese) which the waitstaff finds highly entertaining. Enjoy!
  9. Heads up! Etete is featuring a deal of Groupon right now.
  10. We have our milk, eggs and meat delivered from South Mountain. They run a good business. We will have to check out the farm some time.
  11. The little guy (almost two year old) and I checked this place out last night. I haven't decided yet if I love it or not but it was definitely good enough to try again. I ordered two items off the "Street Food" part of the menu. The Crab and Noodle dish was exactly that. The crab was shredded very finely, which made me think it was the cheaper stuff versus lump crab. It didn't have much flavor but it was nice with the noodles. The noodles (thin, spaghetti-like)were good and seemed fresh. The roast pork was flavorful. I opted for the dry version and would like to try the soup version next time to see if it has a bit more flavor. I would order it again, though. It was a good dish. The Roasted Duck Over Rice was also good, but not high on the flavor scale. They serve both sauces on the side and neither of them blew me away. I liked the pickled ginger part of the dish. Again, a very good, fresh dish but not outstanding. I'm looking forward to trying other items on the menu but I am not rushing back. The service was good (and very good with my son) and I loved the modern design of the place. Not what you expect from the outside.
  12. I was on my elimination diet for 10 months, though I was only dairy and soy free. As I stated in my opening post, I am a big fan of Ceiba. I was so impressed with the waiter there (I ate there numerous times). He knew every possible allergen and really worked with me to help create meals I could eat. I imagine they are all trained as well. Hamilton was also good - I called ahead and spoke to a chef there. I don't know if you're avoiding soybean oil, like I was, but that is what they use in their fryers (like most restaurants), so keep that in mind. Another idea is sushi. You can go pretty straight forward with nigiri and sashimi if you are okay with fish and rice. I like Kaz Sushi Bistro, personally. For more casual meals, I was extremely impressed with Teasim. The manager (Penn Quarter) I spoke to was extremely conscientious and helpful. I called ahead and knew exactly what I could eat. Also, if you find yourself in the VA burbs, check out Pizzeria Orso. They were amazingly accommodating. They make pretty much everything in house, from breads to dressings, so you don't have to worry about hidden ingredients. Yes, I know pizza implies dairy, but they have a lot of other choices other than pizza, and even have a tasty no-cheese pizza.
  13. I have two words for you: maple bacon. Wow! I had a coupon for a free donut so I stopped by. So glad I did. I think this may become a regular Friday treat. It was worth every calorie and gram of fat (I say this having no idea how much of either it has and I have no desire to know). The donut was light and airy. It was perfectly glazed and the right amount of sweet. The bacon was a little "chunky" for me but I'm not complaining. I took a picture which I'd be happy to post if I knew how.
  14. I agree with TheMatt's comments. In addition to preferring the vegetarian platter at Enat, we also really like their beef dishes. I would choose it over Meaza for the food. However, Meaza is much larger and nicer. Enat is tiny and loud. Enjoy your evening! Happy New Year!
  15. Heading to Charleston with a 1 year old and while all of the places recommended here sound great, I am wondering which ones are family friendly. Ninety percent of the time my son is very well behaved and an adventurous eater. However, like most toddlers he doesn't yet know what an inside voice is, so we are not planning to go anywhere too fancy with him. I am told that Husk, The Wreck, and Bowen's Oyster House are good bets (thanks DR friends via Facebook). What else? This is my first real vacation in a long time, and after 10 months on a strict elimination diet I am ready to EAT!
  16. Good questions, Don. I think Goodeats covered it. The sign near the road does say K Fusion. My neighbors refer to as Kenji, and the menu says Kenji. Not sure what the deal is. Maybe they decided to simplify their name after the started out. I have no idea which shopping center is which. Next time I write a review I will find out the exact names of everything, including shopping centers, landlords, holding companies, and I will list their registered agent as well.
  17. A great deal of buzz on our neighborhood listserv led us to check this new place out last Friday night. We got there early, as we like to do since we're dining with a toddler. The restaurant is in the Bailey's Crossroads shopping center on the side of Jefferson with Edy's (near CVS and Verizon Wireless). The décor really took me by surprise. They must have sunk a whole lot of cash into making this place shine. This is the kind of interior you'd expect to see in downtown DC. Very modern, clean, and sparkling. I really like the contemporary style and it was still comfortable and not too stark. The long menu offers a wide-variety of dishes, as you might expect from an Asian fusion concept. I was actually overwhelmed by the many choices, which never happens to me. (It might have been because I was trying to entertain the wee one, though.) We started with the Avocado Salad. It was unremarkable. We ordered a Stacy roll, spicy tuna topped with avocado. This was a huge hit with all three of us (the servers couldn't believe that our 14 month old loved spicy tuna), but was pretty pricey at $13. I am definitely interested in trying more of their sushi but the prices are pretty high for the neighborhood. We shared the Seafood Stir Fry and the Szechuan Chicken. Both were surprisingly mild (they never asked for our spice preferences). Not fabulous, but not bad. Everything was very fresh and the portions were good. They gave us free dessert (fried ice cream) which I found pretty poor but my husband liked). The service was average to above average. The waitresses were very accommodating to our son and didn't seem bothered by his presence. I want to love this place but I was underwhelmed. Still, I am tempted to try it again. However with Yamazoto equidistant from home I am indifferent. I think it would be great for a group or a night out with friends. They have a nice bar area. Website
  18. This is what I was thinking. We are fine with whatever the group decides. We are not concerned about the cleanup and such, but thank you Barbara for thinking of that.
  19. Is there any interest in moving the picnic to a private residence? We are willing to host at our house in Falls Church. The yard isn't huge but we've hosted plenty of large (50-100 people) parties. There is plenty of parking.
  20. We will miss your restaurant, Peter. I'm sorry to hear of it closing, as are many of my Lake Barcroft neighbors. I hope that the future holds great things for you and your family. Thanks for taking the time to post here.
  21. I am surprised I haven't seen a thread on this place. Has anyone tried it? I checked out the space over the weekend (it is beautiful!) but have yet to eat here. My sister is working here (as a bartender) and went through *extensive* training along with all of the other staff. She is obviously biased but she raves about the food. I heard that Sietsema has a review coming out soon. What say you, DR.com community? Website (I think it would be helpful if they posted prices on their menu.)
  22. We visited the Arlington location night and we were definitely impressed. Don't miss the Pork Buns appetizer. These crispy pork sandwiches come two to an order. It was our favorite item that we tried. We also ordered the mandoo appetizer which had a good flavor but were not outstanding. We received 8 nice sized fried dumplings with a dipping sauce. Very crispy outside, flavorful tender meat inside. As expected, the chicken was spot on. The husband preferred the spicy, I prefered the soy-garlic. I normally like spicy but for some reason I wasn't enjoying the heat last night. Our one year old son seemed to like both equally. We ordered the strips and the leg/wing combination and enjoyed all. I was surprised by how much we liked the strips and think I'd order a combination of strips and legs next time. Two points worth mentioning: The space here is remarkable. Clean, modern, and chic. I really liked it. Also, the service was excellent. Servers were friendly, helpful, and efficient.
  23. I love that this thread has taken off. Looks like I'm not at all alone in my plight. Two points to add. One is that I felt compelled to come here and compliment Teaism. A friend wants to meet there for lunch today so I called ahead. I am so impressed with how seriously they are taking my inquiries. A woman named Linda asked me about which menu items I was considering and is currently researching the ingredients to confirm that they are safe. The employee who answered the phone told me they used "Rice Bran Oil" when I asked, and having never heard of it I thought she was confused. Linda confirmed that it is what they use, and told me they are working to remove all soy from their menu because of GMO issues. They also have a separate gluten free menu and another allergen option I can't recall. How cool! Second point is that about two years ago we went to Chef Geoff's for an office lunch. My coworker has a severe peanut allergy. He has had it all of his life and (foolishly) doesn't alert servers because he feels pretty comfortable identifying safe dishes. He ordered the jerk chicken which had nothing it the menu description that indicated it contained nuts. He had an immediate and serious reaction. Thanks to quick-acting coworkers (one who ran down the street for benadryl and another who had an epipen in her purse for her son), he was okay. My understanding is that the restaurant took care of his hospital expenses and was very apologetic. So imagine my surprise when I started this journey and my google search pulled up an article talking about dining out with allergies in different cities in the US and the one DC restaurant they cited was Chef Geoff's.
