  1. 1. What does GMO have to do with DDT? 2. I am no fan of Monsanto but GMO is the most misunderstood term in history. GMO is not bad. Being anti-GMO is as dumb as being anti-vaccines or denying global climate change.
  2. I can live with no reservations as long as it's done fairly. Estadio, for instance, does have reservations. They even have a computer that keeps reservations. Except that it's only for VIPs. I've been in there and refused a table with 2-3 tables open and no line. It's the same nonsense at their sister restaurant Doi Moi. Either have reservations or don't. You basically take a crap on your customers when only certain people can get reservations.
  3. Some sort of mackerel, saba or aji probably.
  4. I've been to Shophouse several times. I have a bunch of complaints but overall it fills a need. First, they don't use gloves in making the banh mi. Is that unclean? No. But it is a little weird to see someone making your food in front of you without gloves. Two, the flavors are too complicated. I just want corn as a topping. Not corn with 3 different types of spices and greens. It's okay for some toppings to be convoluted but a few could be simple. Finally, the food is just too spicy. Way too spicy. And no real information on the menu about what is and isn't spicy.
  5. Anybody who has been to Jaleo (especially the flagship downtown) or Oyamel in the last 5 years could hardly call Jose Andres a great chef. Cafe Atlantico had some good dishes but the menu hadn't changed in a decade. Zatinya is hit or miss except for the service, which is always a miss. America Eats gets mediocre reviews. China Poblano in Vegas is mediocre at best (and I've tried it 3 times -- the Mexican is mediocre, the Chinese is far worse). Jose Andres always has been vastly overrated.
  6. I live near there and I LOVE Breadline but I am skeptical about this place. Who wants a bread place? Americans don't lack "fresh bread" places on every corner (like France) because nobody has created them, we lack them because nobody wants them. And if they do, there's plenty of farmer's market and other options. I don't see it. I wish he'd just open a new Breadline or maybe a bagel place because it looks like the Dupont Bethesda Bagels won't open any time soon.
  7. Had the Feelin Crabby sandwich recently -- it was mediocre at best. In fairness, it tasted better than it looked -- because it looked terrible, loaded with mayonaise and crap. Overall I was unimpressed. I'll stick to lobster rolls at the truck, Luke's, or BGR. (And I actually prefer crab to lobster).
  8. I still don't understand why people rave about the omakase sushi at Sushi Taro --- have these people ever had great omakase in NYC or LA (or Vegas for that matter)? Because frankly this ain't up to snuff. It's okay, don't get me wrong, but it is not fresh-daily super high quality sushi that one gets in top sushi restaurants. It is a poor substitute at 66% of the price.
  9. You're certainly entitled to your opinion but Shake Shack NY (and elsewhere) is tremendously successful because most people (me included) love the burgers. They are 1000 better than In-N-Out (at only triple the price). I agree the fries stink but the concretes are fantastic. But what really counts is the burger -- tender, very flavorful, great sauce, incredibly soft potato bun.
  10. Floriana gets almost no press and for some reason I never "think" about it even though I live right down the block. But when I've been, the meal has impressed me. The lasagna is particularly good, and they have a bargain night (Tuesday?) where wine is half price, or dinners are 2-1, or something like that. It is a neighborhood gem that deserves more praise.
  11. I know this restaurant is long closed, but I was still curious to read the review. I tried to eat at this place twice -- both times refused, both times the joint was completely empty. It held a mythical quality for me, as I love nothing more than great sushi, but I refused to put up with the ridiculous games required to get seated. The owner was downright hostile to customers, maybe just white customers, I don't know. The whole thing was just insane. I mean -- you've got a restaurant, it's 12:30 on a Wednesday and the place is empty, and two people dressed in suits come in and you refuse to seat them because they don't have a reservation? Never mind that NOBODY has a reservation for the restaurant at all that day. Never mind that you have food to serve, drink to sell, and employees sitting around doing nothing. Here a couple of well-paid white guys come in, ready to drop $200 or so on a nice lunch, and they are flat out refused. I really wanted to learn what was going on there. Was the guy independently wealthy and criminally insane? Where is he now?
  12. I have lived near the Dupont branch for a long time -- 9 years. Until recently, it was not good. The sushi was barely edible. The service was terrible. The fusion plates were passable, but barely. All that changed at some point in the last 2-4 years (I can't put a finger on when because I rarely went when it was bad). I tried Raku again last year and it was so much better. Service has improved dramatically. All the food is better. Is it "great" Asian food? No, not a chance. It is still just okay. But the sushi is good enough. The pad thai and Asian dishes generally are pleasing. It's a great neighborhood restaurant. I'd never go out of my way to eat there, but as a Dupont local, I love it. Great location, great outdoor space, great menu. Over the last year or so, I've been about once a week and will continue to do so unless quality gets worse for some reason.
