  1. I may be able to help with a printer. I have a printer in VA I use for work who I can ask if you can give me quantites and dimensions. He does all our printing and we do alot of volume with him. I saw you said 10,000 earlier but is that really how many you want?
  2. The Smokey Pig was great. Even though I went to HSC, that is one thing in Ashland I could support. It's too bad they couldn't find a buyer to save that place. Dixie bones is about as good as I've gotten up here. Hmmm...sounds like I'm heading to Woodbridge for lunch.
  3. Leviathan, whoa. Talk about being a little buzzed. I probably should have waited to post until this morning considering our outing last night. I could have been a little more tactful and given a little more depth in my comment. Here is the thing, I so desperately want a good BBQ place in the DC area. I don't want fusion. I just want good smoked BBQ. They have a state of the art smoking machine (whose exhaust is odorless but that is a conversation for another time) and do well on their smoking times. I have seen a few briskets come out a little dry but the pork is good. They could spend more time pulling the que but otherwise fine. The best thing is they are here in Alexandria. Their problem, as you pointed out, are the sides. Collards need more heat, a little more vinegar, and seasoning. The mac and cheese has gone through three distinctive recipe changes that I can identify. The current form is okay but mac and cheese shouldn't necessarily be shells and it should be baked. The slaw gets absorbed into BBQ sauce and pork but from prior tastings, I think it's fine. Business seems to be good but adding servers adds overhead. I've waited for over two years for this place to open, I'd hate for them to get in trouble adding to their operational cost because a few people complained about going to the bar for their drinks. Maybe if it was a bit crummier inside, people might not expect service but that isn't the case. They did well with their space. I can see how people can get annoyed if they are sitting at the central tables near where the line forms but that's neither here nor there about the food itself. The solution we came up with is to just sit at the bar to tie food and drink together. If Bill and Co. lurk around the dr.com, they'll pick up some good insight here. My head still hurts a bit from last night but I think I got something cogent here. Thanks.
  4. I am in pure Yankee land. I've heard enough about being served. It's a new concept for up here but not different from many BBQ places that I have grown up going to in the South. They do a great job smoking the pork and we order one side of slaw to throw on our sandwiches. The mac is good and so arethe collards and beans. I don't know what you people are looking for but if smoked pork BBQ is what your looking for, this is a good place to go. If you are from any place north of Richmond, you'll have to get used to serving yourself in a great family atmosphere. This is not Eve or Citronele. It's a BBQ place in the neighborhood that is trying to fill a void in Alexandria. Don't over think it, just go and enjoy.
  5. I'm not sure this is the right fourm but I want to have a pig roast at the house over the weekend of July 4. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who can cook a whole pig Latin or Filipino style? That is to say on a rotisserie and not in a drum on a grate. I've cooked quite a few both ways but I am having a hard time sourcing the size pig I need up here. I am thinking it would be easier for me all around if someone else cooked it and brought it to the house instead. By the way, I am looking for about 100 lb dead weight pigs so suckling pigs at Eden Center wouldn't work. Thanks in advance for your help.
  6. Here goes with my first post (I did do an intro as well). We went last night for the opening party and had a great time. Usual suspects from Eve were there and it was packed. The building is incredible. It's not only expansive but it is well done with a lot of attention to detail. The beer cocktails were perfect for the hot afternoon and early evening party near the Potomac. The beer taps downstairs are above the bar which we thought was neat. With two full bars upstairs and downstairs, no one in Alexandria is going to be thirsty. The food was being passed and everything from the sausage to the wings were good. The menu looks like a winner and is exactly what Old Town needed. Plenty of flat panels but located in the restaurant thoughtfully and tastefully well. There really is something for everyone regardless if you are an Eve patron or a visitor to Old Town. I think they are going to do very well.
  7. Hello everyone. I live in Alexandria and enjoy good food but admittedly I am not a foodie. I just know what I like and sometimes on the rare occurance, what to expect. I was raised in the South so I enjoy southern food which seems to be a bit scarce up here or you can find it with a 'twist'. I am UVa fan thus my moniker which I use on another UVa forum. I know a little about wine...just enough to be dangerous. I have stuck to mostly Spanish wine over the past decade but move around between France and Italy when it seems appropriate. We eat out very often and the range goes from Chadwick's to Eve. I am always looking for great restaurant recs and reviews so I look forward to reading more great reviews as opposed to rants that can be googled online. Thanks for letting me introduce myself.
