  1. After being revived by a bowl of ramen at Ippudo, we stopped at the Old Town Bar to meet up with some friends. We did not eat here, but this is a notable place because it is a real throwback bar, like you read about, and open since 1892. It is the kind of bar where the bartender enthusiastically and knowledgeably discusses the on-going Allman Brothers run at the Beacon Theatre and the person sitting next to you at the bar offers you a hard cover copy of Bad Monkey by Carl Hiaasen because she has finished reading it and it is such a good book. That kind of place.
  2. I can't seem to find anything on this place on here, which is probably due to my poor searching and/or reading skills. So apologies if this is a repeat thread. We stopped by on Friday night with a group of four to check this place out, and left thoroughly impressed. A few thoughts (and all from memory as they have no website so I can't cheat and look at things): It' much smaller than I expected. And much smaller than its two neighbors, Eat the Rich and Mockingbird Hill. In that, the front rooms of Mockingbird Hill and Eat the Rich are the same size as the entirety of Southern Efficiency. And unlike those two establishments, there are no tables here (or at least not now, there's a spot in the front window currently occupied by a Christmas tree that could easily house a couple of tables), only the bar, and a ledge opposite the bar on which to rest drinks and food. This configuration does mean that when it gets busy it's quite challenging to navigate from the bar to the restrooms. Right now at least they feature three cocktails on their menu, although they're capable of making many more (not probably to the extent of the Passenger do to ingredients). The three on the menu on Friday were the Blackstrap and Switchel (Cruzan Blackstrap rum, switchel, which is apparently some sort of apple vinegar, water and spices, of which I know ginger is one but I don't know the rest); the Stone Fence (Whiskey, apple cider and bitters? I feel like I'm off on this one although I know those three ingredients were involved); and the White Whiskey and Smoked Cola (self explanatory). The first two are pre-made and served in jars, while the last one is on tap. All were quite tasty. Forced to pick I'd probably go with the Stone Fence, but I was happy with both that and the Blackstrap and Switchel. They also had a hot toddy listed on the wall as a special, but I have no ideas on the details of this drink. I think they had four beers on tap, all from Virginia and North Carolina I believe. They had two wines, both Virginia, and the red was a Cab Franc. Tons of whiskeys on their menu. I really appreciated that broke bourbons down into "high rye" and "high wheat" categories. Really helpful if you're dealing with a whiskey you've never had before. We ordered the whole menu, four appetizers, three mains, one dessert, and everything was at least good, and some of it was excellent. Our favorite items were all three entrees (Country Captain, BBQ Pork Sandwich and Fried Catfish), as well as the trout appetizer (smoked trout, and smoked trout deviled eggs with pickled vegetables). We enjoyed the other items as well (Peanut Soup, Chicken Liver and Gizzard Pate and Pimento Cheese). The dessert, bourbon balls, were probably our least favorite item). Seemed very reasonably priced to us. The space makes it challenging to go for dinner with more than two people. We really lucked out and grabbed the corner of the bar right before it got slammed, which put us in a good position. We noticed others, however, perched in a huddle around the ledge behind us trying to eat peanut soup, and that can't have been the most pleasant dining experience. Anyhow, as expected it was good, and we'll be back.
  3. Fuck Hop Sing. I have never been more rudely treated anywhere, and this is a place that didn't allow my party in because the doorman said I was wearing sneakers. Then he gave me the bird. For the record, I am wearing Mozo's Marcus Samuelsson shoes. Drinks might well be great. Wouldn't know. Todd Thrasher, Gina Chersevani, Derek Brown, Jeff Faile, et al., would never DREAM of pulling a stunt like that. Fuck those guys. Period.
  4. I lived near Rye and its companion Bar Below Rye for two years before making it inside. Mistake! Bar Below Rye has all of the makings of a Local. The bartender makes a terrific Manhattan and the drunken grilled cheese (with caramelized onion jam and short ribs) is great drinking food. Confession: I had 1.5 drunken grilled cheese sandwiches during a recent visit. I don't do brussels sprouts but my friend gave BBR's Best Ever status.
  5. Michael Klein of philly.com has reported that Tin Roof, a Nashville-based live music joint ("joint" seems to be an apt descriptor - it's to be three stories and 12,000-square-feet) will be opening across from Ladder 15 on Sansom Street.
  6. Just want to put in a good word for this joint, brought to you by the same folks as SunDeVich and Seasonal Pantry. Cheap artisanal drinks and amazing (but very limited) food menu. The bar in front was packed on Saturday night, but the back room was quite empty. If you're in the neighborhood after 5 PM and looking for addictively tasty bar grub, you need to make your way to this place.
  7. Was Garrett's named after Garrett County, Maryland? I always half-assumed so because of the railroad motif, and was in love with the place because my mom was born and raised in Kempton.
  8. Last night was a fantastic night to hang out on the roof top bar at The Reef in the Morgan. My bison tenderloin was fantastic, and they have a long list of new Oktoberfest beers on tap including Otter Creek (YUM), Ayinger, and Hofbrau.
  9. On a separate topic (keeping with the late night options in Mt. Pleasant theme), Raven Grill was named by Esquire Magazine as one of the best bars in America, which I find absolutely hilarious.
  10. You'd think we would've learned our lesson about trying places in the first month of opening by now, but here we are... Vendetta is a new Italian restaurant/bar/bocce court venture by Joe Englert in the old Red Palace space. The place looks amazing. It's tough to believe it used to be a dive bar and grungy music/burlesque venue. We started our night with cocktails, all of which were well made. The favorite of the group was the Linden Court (bourbon, amaro, madeira, orange bitters, and vanilla). I would normally have ordered a Negroni, but curiously, they have chosen to muck up the drink by adding orange juice. For appetizers, we ordered pickled green beans, a charcuterie plate, fritto misto, and "artisan bread." The charcuterie was the highlight, but they can't really take credit for much more than plating nicely sourced salumi. The fritto misto was fine, but nothing outstanding - 3 medium sized shrimp and 3-4 baby octopi. The breading did not seem to be seasoned at all. The bread consisted of 4 chunks of cold, standard crusty bread and a pretzel stick, all inexplicably served in a large paper bag. It was served with a too-small amount of "bourbon chutney butter." For mains, there were a couple of specials, but everyone went the pasta route. The pastas are touted as being made in-house. You choose a shape and then pair with one of several sauces. I can only vouch for the squid ink and the rabbit ragu. Both were completely unseasoned and served on the cool side of luke warm. The papardelle served with the ragu was drying out with the noodles all clumped together. No bueno. The requested salt shaker and wine were delivered ~5 minutes after everyone finished their pasta. Luckily our dining companions were great, and between the cocktails and the company, a good time was had by all. I'm sure the service issues will iron out somewhat over time...the food, I'm more skeptical about. There was such a tremendous lack of seasoning throughout, I'm not sure anyone back there was paying any attention to what they were putting out. All that said, I'm sure we'll be back for cocktails and bocce...and maybe that's the whole point.
  11. Bob and Barbara's Lounge. This place is for real -- even if last time I was there, an immaculately dressed family of French tourists came in, guidebook in hand, for the jazz. OK, maybe not for dinner. But for after.
  12. Okay Rockwellians, I have been holding out on you. Yes. Believe it or not. I have found the perfect brunch place for me and it happens to be at a place I consider a dive bar. The menu is smallish but everything I have had has been extremely well executed and the dish I had today was out of this world. Today I had a gazpacho unlike any other I have had. Not only are there yummy tomatoes, it has chunks of peaches, cantalope and other fruits with a nice amount of heat thrown in from peppers. A very healthy brunch choice I would add. Oh you may be wondering with what is this gazpacho served? Well, let me tell you... the most fabulous corn cakes I have ever experienced. The corn cakes are a combination of cornbread and pancakes with crunchy fresh corn in the batter. YUM. The cakes are topped with smoked salmon and chive sour cream. The presentation alone makes the dish special but the taste makes it divine. I have had both the eggs benedict and eggs florentine which taste amazingly fresh. I know a weird adjective to describe a dish but sometimes egg dishes at restaurants don't taste all that fresh to me. The bacon is really good too. The fruit cup is a real treat because the chef shows a bit of whimsy with it. The price is right too for brunch as the entrees run $8.00 and the sides are $2.50. Plus they play really good music and if you have kids they have great video games for them to play. Larry the owner really wants this to be a family friendly brunch spot and has invested in high chairs and booster seats. Plus the place is non smoking during brunch. Oh and the food at night is really quite nice too but I love brunch so this is what I want to write. Brunch is on Saturday and Sundays from 11-3. YUMMMM...
  13. Today's Daily Candy says this place opens tomorrow. Does anyone have the scoop? David Gregory seems like an old friend. Where is Gregory going?
  14. 124 Rabbit Club 124 MacDougal St. New York, NY10012 The tiniest little dive in the Village is actually a great craft beer bar (which basically only has craft beer, though there are some ciders). It has just three taps, but features a well thought out, Belgian-heavy bottle list. A true dive, it's in a brick-walled basement, "decorated" with coasters, candles made from broken beer bottles (some jagged), and, of course, rabbit-themed art. The German beers were particularly interesting to me, so, after a draft Stoudt's Pilsner (an outstanding Pennsylvania beer I've never before had on tap), I tried the Einbecker Schwarzbier - an excellent version of this style, which makes Kostrizer seem just ordinary. Keeping with that theme, my next beer was a Monschoff Schwarzbier, a very different, dryer version of the style with much darker malts for a smokier, almost grilled bread-like quality. To close out a rather long visit, I went with a Schlenkerla Marzen, a rauchbier, which is about as close to liquid bacon as you can come, without being actual, liquid bacon. If you find yourself in the Village and are at all into beer, this is a great place to know about. But also know, it only takes cash.
  15. Don, you can delete the "Glover Park" from the headline because the space has quickly been turned over. It's now a place called Kitchen. Walking over to Heritage India, I thought that perhaps it was a menu tasting (the space looked unfinished to me), but no, Kitchen is open and advertising Super Bowl specials.
  16. Wandering around H Street, we were looking for a place to have a few drinks and some snacks before indulging in 11pm ramen. The words "Pork Shoulder Tacos" scrawled on the glass underneath the image of a fruit bat stopped me mid-stride. "Nicky- Fruit Bat!" I'd made my decision. The place is pretty darn tiny, and I have to image the kitchen is the size of a postage stamp. At 9:30pm on a Friday, they were more than struggling with kitchen stock. They were out of the tacos. They were out of the guacamole. They were out of the blueberry caipirinhas. I didn't really care. The music was great, the drinks were really great, and I was enjoying a date with my husband in a cozy bar while H street thronged with people. I had an "Old School Player"- Old Overholt with orange juice, and liked it quite a lot. Nicky had something with grapefruit and coconut which sounds like an awful fruity mess but was actually really drinkable- we had two of these. And then there were the surprises. Suddenly, pork tacos showed up! I think someone ran out for tortillas- the tortillas were not at all in the same class as the pork, cabbage, and sauce inside them. But the effort was definitely appreciated. Then the bartender came by and explained that the doughnuts were taking so long because they had to make another batch of dough. Freshly-fried doughnuts sound great to me, thank you. And they were. Warm bits of freshly-fried dough on a bed of chocolate mousse with a dash of coffee and powdered sugar. We inhaled these. And then I tried to get up every last bit of chocolate with my spoon. It's got to be incredibly hard to try to run a kitchen out of there. But the place is very warm and welcoming, and I liked it a lot. Given that many dinner destinations down on H street come with two-hour waits on a friday or saturday, you could do far worse than while away your time here.
  17. It's a bit sad to me, but Champion Billiards, where I've shot many a game of nine-ball over the years (with my custom cue wrapped in Irish linen) closed awhile back, and has reopened as "Lucy's ARL" under new proprietors - they have a slightly more ambitious menu, and a pretty funny website. I hope they do well here - Champion was a pool-shooter's pool hall in many ways, and I look forward to trying them out. Cheers, Rocks
  18. My spy informs me you have an awesome silk screen printing on the wall (and even brought me a pack of Black Jack gum, a piece of which I'm enjoying right now). Congratulations! Bocce ball !! --- ETA - The menu at Black Jack is funny, one of the more entertaining menus in the city. There's an item named D.O.C.B.S. with roma tomatoes, fresh buffalo mozzarella, and basil. A gulf shrimp sandwich is described as 'a lot better than a lobster truck, and we bring it to you.' Jeff Black Gone Wild.
  19. Is there not a thread for Amico? I couldn't find one... Anyways, went there for the first time last night. While I can't comment on the food, I had a heck of a great time with some delicious cocktails during Spirits in Black, with guest bartender (last night) Alex Bookless. Seemed like half the bartenders in DC were there! Loud as heck, crowded, and tons of fun (except for the shrill drunk girl next to me for a few minutes, but hey, that's what happens sometimes). I need another Rye on Fire....
  20. I grew up in Philly - I live in Alexandria now. Interestingly, you wont find pit beef in Philly, but roast beef sandwiches are very popular. Nick's Roast Beef is somewhere to go when you've grown up eating hot roast beef sandwiches (cheese or not) on kaiser rolls at every single birthday, graduation, confirmation and communion party! Then there's the Philly "beef and beer", which is the way to throw a party or fund raiser (generally in a fire hall) in Philly. I don't think that the roast beef sandwiches I grew up with have the same nuance as B'more's, but it is a very popular sandwich that most Philadelphians will like and have memories of.
  21. Birch beer on tap at Vienna Inn, Ms. Heather. I wouldn't wash down a chilidog with anything else.
  22. Summary: beer snob (in a good way) friend and vegetarian wife coming to visit, looking for bar-type place with good beer (ideally obscure and local, Sam Adams does not count) and whatever it is that vegetarians eat. Should be walking distance from 14th and Rd. Island. Viridian and Beck are too upscale -- need something like a vegan "Friends". (Speaking of which) Friends of said wife have suggested Health Bar, next to Results gym. I've never been there but I can't can't help but imagine that it sucks. Any suggestions or reassurances that Health Bar doesn't suck will be appreciated.
