  1. I've seen Geppetto in the good old days, back when there was a branch going strong in Georgetown. However, it's been almost five years since my last meal there, a pleasant lunch in what is now Oakville Grille and Wine Bar, a restaurant with the same ownership (Karol, has it really been that long?) Now relegated to an alleyway entrance to what used to be a back room, Geppetto no longer feels the same. When I walked by a table, I saw a pretty decent-looking roast chicken, which is a good sign for Oakville Grille, but I was there for the money item - the Sicilian Deep-Dish pie that Geppetto has been famous for since 1977. I've had it numerous times in the past, and have always enjoyed it, even as recently as five years ago I remember walking out thinking how impressed I was with it; no longer. Oh, the old, bent deep-dish pans are still there, and the pizza is as thick as it has ever been (they claim one-inch, but it seems even thicker than that). A large Meat Lover's ($25) was one of the heaviest pizzas I have ever seen, a 15-inch monster cut into six slices, each weighing perhaps two pounds. The base of this pizza is cheap, bready crust that reminds me of bad frozen industrial-white bread, the bottom of which was somewhat golden, but not enough to make it exciting. The toppings were simply excessive, a sweet tomato sauce countering all the meats, including pepperoni, sausage, bacon, proscuitto ham, and ground beef. The ground beef smelled like well-done ground beef, which isn't a surprise, but how often do you actually get that scent in a pizza? The pepperoni was bulk-quality, curled-up slices, and was so dominant that when the pizza arrived, it looked like a Matthew's tomato pie - I honestly thought at first glance that these were plum tomatoes. We each counted around 50 slices on half the pie, which meant there were fully 100 slices of pepperoni on six slices of pizza. It was a nitrate festival gone wrong. I washed it down with the only beer on the list that interested me, a bottle of Mendocino Red Tail Ale ($6), perhaps a nod to the days when this restaurant group owned Mendocino Grille, although I don't know if Charles Lenkin is involved any more or not. I got into a lengthy discussion with my young dining companion about the pie, originally stating that it had no redeeming qualities other than it was cheap, and that it was bulky. He disagreed, correctly pointing out that it could have been a lot greasier, and that Pizza Hut is much, much worse than this. I can't vouch for Pizza Hut, but I do give Geppetto credit for draining the grease off their ground beef before piling it on; the overall impression was: sodium-ridden, yes, but grease-ridden, not as much as it could have been. Regardless, this was not the Geppetto of old. However, if you want a lot of pizza, for not a lot of money (I only wanted to eat 1 1/4 slices, although I could have eaten 2), then this pie might meat (sorry) your kneads (sorry). I won't be rushing back, and I even have a twinge of sadness as I write this, because I used to love Geppetto. Cheers, Rocks.
  2. Does anyone have recommendations for restaurants near Strathmore Hall in North Bethesda? Addie's, Oakville, Black Market Bistro, others?
  3. I will leave it to escoffier to describe the Vidalia extravaganza, if he sees fit. As for me, another recent indulgence was the baby clams with black bean sauce at Mark's Duck House. A couple of days later, I went to China Pavilion, in the Sangamore Center, and with the echoes of Mark's still rattling around in my gullet, ordered the shrimp-scallop combo with black bean sauce, but alas it was too sweet, somebody had sugared it. But their seaweed salad was just right.
  4. I checked all over the Dining Guide and couldn't find this little gem. While visiting someone at Suburban Hospital, I saw it about a block away and it beckoned. So today, I grabbed carry-out for about a dozen people. The community store and deli is nothing special. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and such in a small Montgomery County historic site. But a few months ago, a mobile BBQ stand called BCS BBQ arrived next door, and it's turning out some really good BBQ. We had a pulled pork sandwich, spicy and mild chicken, and spicy and mild ribs, along with sides of potato salad and cole slaw. This is genuinely good grub, with red oak being the wood of choice for the grillmaster. The ribs are thick and meaty, fall-off-the-bone tender, with the right combination of smoke, rub and sauce. The chicken was tender, juicy and flavorful. The pulled pork was excellent, but the sandwich bun was nothing special. The cole slaw was genuine, and the potato salad had good flavor, but both were on the slightly dry side. All in all, this is a place I would return to whenever I'm in the area. Very finger-licking good.
  5. Pesca Deli is now advertising that have also opened a butcher shop across the street at 4961 Bethesda Avenue called Butchers Alley.
  6. I am tasked with organizing a pre-launch customer go-live drinks thing near my office as we have a big customer going live. The company has done it before at places like Rock Bottom (boring), Gringos and Mariachis (OK), but looking for something different. Suggestions for a place with a decent bar, ideally decent cocktails, and at least some tasty nibbles to go with? Redwood? Barking Dog? Food Wine & Co? Tyber Bierhaus? I am really kind of at a loss for a place in Bethesda that does decent cocktails, good beer and wine, ideally some beverages for the 2 or 3 under 21 crowd on staff, and decent appetizery stuff we can order to share. Having decent room for us to mill about would be good, so no tiny bar areas allowed. Not planning on securing a time or designated room as # of people is up in the air (probably up to 20), so just planning on heading wherever it is early (like 5)... TIA!
  7. This is a cute little place that opened last fall. My husband and I have stopped in for lunch several times (they have lunch specials), and have been very pleased with the experience. We've tried a variety of dishes and all have been excellent. Most recently, my husband had the Sushi special and I had Tuna Tataki. Everything was very fresh and tasty. They serve beer and wine. The space is bright, modern and attractive.
  8. Two words: toasted brioche. One3five is a food truck that sits where the old Alibaba Falafel truck was before they got kicked out, by the Women's Cooperative Market on WIsconsin and Willow Lane. Unlike other food trucks they don't really roam. These guys are consistently making the best sandwiches I've eaten in Bethesda. My favorite so far is the ironically named Knot Kosher, which is roast pork, bacon, slaw, and chipotle mayo on butter toasted challah bread. The Turkeylicious is also great: it's your standard bacon turkey sandwich except on brioche with avocado and cranberry mayo. They also have great soups. I've enjoyed the clam chowder and the squash soups. A combo with a sandwich, side soup and soda is $10. If you're ever in Bethesda for lunch and don't want to spend too much, then give these guys a try. http://www.one3fivecuisine.com
  9. I hadn't heard of this place until friends invited me to join them this evening for dinner and a Grateful Dead cover band show. Not sure I'm going yet, but I don't recall seeing anything about this joint on DR.com. Anyone been? The menu looks enticing with items for meat eaters (Villains) and vegetarians (Saints). http://villainandsaint.com/

  12. Well, looks like I dropped the ball (work, kids, etc.) in making dinner reservations for our anniversary, which is actually today (11/6) but unable to do dinner tonight. Looking for someplace that we can walk into tomorrow night probably around 8 and somewhere not to far from Bethesda. We don't mind sitting at the bar as long as we don;t have a bunch of people hovering over us. Wife is not a big fan of Italian food. Drawing a blank right now. How is the bar area at Rasika-West End?
  13. With Matuba closing, Azami's Japanese model railroad club is looking for a new place to hold their monthly sushi lunch. They've had an occasional lunch at Satsuma, but Satsuma won't work as a long-term solution. The most important criteria are a) reasonably priced (i.e. like Matuba); b ) good at handling large groups; and c) in Bethesda. Does anyone have any recommendations?
  14. According to The List foodie site, former Bezu chef Dennis Friedman has bought out Bethesda's Rock Creek restaurant space, and will reopen the restaurant as Newton's Table. The space will undergo a complete makeover and become a contemporary American restaurant with an Asian flair, embracing the farm-to-table movement as much as possible.
  15. Read this today: "4935 Bar and Kitchen Owner in Negotiations To Take Over Brasserie Monte Carlo Space" by Andrew Metcalf on bethesdamagazine.com Brasserie Monte Carlo might be down on the ropes.....or not. Only been there once in the past 4 or 5 years. Almost got there a couple of weeks ago, might try to get there for lunch in case they are gone soon.
  16. not wanting to schlep all the way out to Annapolis yesterday we gambled and went to Steamer's crab house in Bethesda - when we walked in the place was empty and no staff were visible - just as we were about to leave the sole waiter/manager hustled upstairs apologizing profusely so we decided to stay.....and boy are we glad we did......prices were $50/60/70 for medium large, x-large respectively and we decided on a dozen large....they were huge and heavy, the meat was sweet and plentiful, so much so that by the time we were done I was stuffed to the gills, something that hardly ever happens when I eat crab....I've never really heard of this place but it was worth every penny yesterday
  17. Has anyone been yet? We went on Friday night on a recommendation from a co-worker. We thought the sushi was a great value (pretty tasty and very cheap). Plus they had half priced wine, with no restrictions, and the wine list was extensive for being a hotel restaurant. Just wanted to see if anyone else had an opinion on this place.
  18. Fresh Grill opened this week on Fairmont Avenue in Bethesda. When I checked the menu it was another burger place, which would put three in three blocks on this side of Bethesda (Burger Joint, Fresh Grill and Wing Hub. The first thought is that there is no way this area will support another burger place, especially if it is mediocre. That is what it was mediocre and overpriced (I know that is shocking in Bethesda). A basic burger is 7.95 plus toppings extra buck or two. This week is 20% off for their opening week special (not advertised). I wanted to like it and it wasn't bad - Just not good either. I think salt would have gone a long way (maybe even made it good). Flavorless was the issue, I keep thinking. They are serving fresh fried potato chips and they were very crispy and fresh, but every bite I took was obviously missing something (I just kept thinking these would be great with some kosher salt and quality parmesan cheese). If you try this place, you need to remember to say medium rare, I was told everything is cooked medium well unless you ask for less. I asked for less and thought it still could have used about a minute or so less on the grill - This burger still needed a quality salt seasoning, The bun had nothing either. The counter help was very nice and really trying but needs some training and settle in time. Bottom Line - If they learn to add salt and keep up the quality they have some potential, but my thought while eating was that I would have enjoyed BGR more
  19. My wife will be retiring at the end of October 2015. A Bethesda area location would be best with 25 to 35 participants. I think that October 22 would be the best date. Her employees are used to paying between 10 to 15 dollars for similar events but I would be willing to supplement or pay for any costs incurred for this event. Let me know of any suggestions, A isolated area would be preferred but not required. Thanks for your help. - Paul
