  1. I liked the tofu taco--it was moist with a moo shi pork flavor. The chicken in the chicken taco was a little overcooked, though. Didn't sample the bulrogi/kimchi combo because I am a weenie. Definitely a good value for the money by L'Enfant Plaza standards, but not sure I'd stand in line 50 minutes again. Folks texting their buds into the line, and people ordering for their office added to the wait time.
  2. Didn't give this place a second thought when it opened, thinking "another strip mall sushi place" However, today's review by Eve Zibart in the Post makes it sound like a place definitely worth checking out.
  3. Jersey Mike's was not found in the Multiple Locations Dining Guide, so I thought I'd fire up a thread... I like this place and would rank it ahead of Potbelly in the subs/sandwiches category. The standard, to me, is the Italian Cold Cut (ICC) and I use that as my benchmark when comparing places. Jersey Mikes follows what I call the 'wet tube" philosophy, where an ICC sub is would tight and has lots of wet stuff like shredded lettuce, oil, vinegar, mayo and 'hots'. Contrast this to the loose and relative dry subs at White House subs in Atlantic City, NJ - and you'll get the drift. Growing up in Rockville, the great submarine war between Ollie's and Twinbrook Deli produced an endless supply of great wet tube ICCs. They still do and if you can't get to Rockville, Jersey Mike's is the next best thing. Being a huge chain, of course there can be some variation between locations but in my experience the food is pretty consistent between the 5+ locations I've visited. (the people making it, not so much.) I recommend asking them to go light on the oil and vinegar; sometimes the bottles are mistaken for cocktail mixers...and the sub suffers. But if done right, you get a tangy ICC that's sloppy but not disintegrating. You may disagree below
  4. While I am far from being a vegan, or a vegetarian, you didn't mention Great Sage. I've been there several times and found it to be enjoyable. If you buy into the concept, plant-based organic food, it can be quite tasty. Definitely do vegan food better than most places that specialize in such. It is our go to when a couple of my militant vegan relatives visit.
  5. So far, we have a Bakeries, Cupcakes, and Doughnuts thread, but no love for remaining types of goodies. So, here is one, because I thought others could share their finds, given the wide girth of options available in New York City. This past weekend's find was OddFellows Ice Cream, originating in Williamsburg, with an outpost (tiny) in East Village. I determinedly visited here after seeing Chef Johnny Iuzzini's tweets with photos about this place. I like that it uses local dairy to make its ice cream, as well as that it donates $0.05 per purchase to a food bank. The Village outpost is kind of a fun teeny place, with its uniform throwbacks and wholesome flavors, offering typical and unusual flavors, along with shakes, sundaes, splits, and such. When little man and I visited yesterday, his order of mint chocolate and my thai ice both hit the spot. I like how the ice creams weren't super sweet, and it was nice his wasn't so minty like some can be. The unusual flavor yesterday was Ants on a log, where the customer before us proclaimed, "there is such a succinct celery taste to it!"
  6. Was at Rockfish Saturday night with some girlfriends after a day at the salon. We normally go to Rockfish when we miss the deadline for brunch at Carrol's Creek and Chart House. But we had a really nice dinner. The wine selection is not huge, but we managed to find a good wine that was very reasonable. I started with a cup of MD crab soup, it was very good, had all the requisite flavors and the vegetables were not mushy. I really enjoyed it, it would have been even better last week in all the rain. I am really a big fan of MD crab soup when done right. It is one of my favorite soups. I then had the fish tacos- an app as an entree. There were three tacos with two very generous pieces of battered cod in each tortilla. On the bottom was a really good slaw with a little avocado puree. I thought they were good, although as I got full I ate the stuffing and left the tortilla. It had good flavor as was a little different from the normal entrees on a lot of Annapolis menus. My dinner mates had the crab and lobster pastas. The crab one looked incredible. The lobster smelled phenomenal, but you had to take the meat out of the shell and cut it and that made it really messy and difficult to eat politely, they should go ahead and take the meat out of the shell before serving the dish. Anyway this place is normally very solid, a little dark inside, but nice and a little more casual than O'Leary's or etc.
  7. My wife and daughter are going to see Mamma Mia, July 2nd at Wolf Trap, they are getting catered food from Wolf Trap. Any opinions on wether the grub is any good?

  10. I've been to George's a few times. Really good ribs - not quite as good as Dale's Smokehouse just a mile up the road, but I'll take them over anything in DC proper.   11. I'm surprised Linwoods hasn't been brought up before. We went for the first time last week and enjoyed the $24 Prix Fixe lunch menu. "Linwoods Restaurant: A Gem In Owings Mills" by me.
  12. I keep on driving on rte one and the lights have been out at Afghan Restaurant for a while - They have the best flatbread and used to have an awesome all-you-can-eat lunch special. I saw a sign that seemed to be offering up the space for redevelopment. Anyone know if they are ever re-opening or are the days of great bread, slurpy noodle soup and crazy- generous kebab platters over?
  13. I've been here several times over the past half dozen years or so. It's not great, but it's local and they do decent pastas and they are open sometimes when other places are not. That said, I tried carry out pizza from here of late. Pasta Plus, my usual local purveyor (closest to my house) was closed the day I needed a pizza and well, I rolled the dice. It was not horrible. Not even meh. But just....average. <sigh> Will have to try to get back to make sure thier pastas are still ok or not. Ah well.
  14. Banducci's at 2nd & F Streets NE is closed and construction's been ongoing for the past 6 weeks, inside & out. I spoke w/ the building owner (John) a few weeks ago. He says that a Roberto Donna protege (named Danielli?) is opening a rustic northern Italian restaurant. The chef also worked at Panache. The space is quite small. Looks like, as before, it'll be a counter downstairs and tables upstairs. Inside looks largely the same. They've torn out the overgrown bushes that used to seperate the patio from the first house on F St. Its paved and they've done other concrete work on the patio. From the look & sound of things, I'm not sure what will be so different from the old Banducci's business model. Its a small space with as much outdoor seating in the summer as he has upstairs year round. A website is up and also mentions catering. Interested to see what develops....
  15. Didn't see a topic for this place. AllSpice Cafe is on Oak Street essentially across the street from the new Heavy Seas Alehouse, kind of on the back side of the building, next door to Kanpai. It's a great little place when you're in the neighborhood. Good sandwiches (I've tended to the wraps like the southwestern wrap or bbq chicken).... mrs. rbh likes the chicken hummus veggie sandwich and swears by their breakfast wraps. They have apple fritters as big as a face - and they have Swings coffee. I've had their soups a couple times and was pleased. Soups and sandwich specials rotate daily. They also have a made-to-order salad station that I have to try sometime. Given the other choices around for take-out sandwiches, I put this over all the walking distance places (capriottis, subway, jimmy johns, etc). Particularly for the price. Basically if I'm working from home and want to wander out for a lunch sandwich, this is the default unless I feel like driving to Italian Store or Earl's. I hope that when the demolition starts on this bldg and the one next door in a couple years that they're able to find a new home.
  16. I drove past this place off of a feeder lane on Rte. One/Jefferson Davis Hwy in Dumfries and did a U-turn when I saw/smelt the smoker out on their front lawn puffing out the most fragrant smoke ever. Inside the little house (parking in the back) Raven behind the counter advised that the wings, ribs and chopped pork were the most popular items. I couldn't decide between the chicken or the pork so I ordered the ribs platter with sides of green beans and corn on the cob with peach cobbler for dessert. The ribs were tender and delicious - smoky and moist but the BBQ sauce on the table also set it off nicely. It seemed like a cross between a vinegary Carolina style and sweet Memphis style sauce. The dry rub on the ribs was not too salty. The corn on the cob was a cobbette that may have been frozen at some point. The green beans were seasoned with molasses and pot likker and were generously salted. I'll go for the collard greens and yams next time. Peach cobbler was delectable but lacked in presentation - it came in a little plastic tub and looked like afterbirth. Banana pudding was also offered and I think I will go for that next.   17. Washington Deli, which has AMAZING pizza, also has some impressive options on their site (although I've never had anything other than their pizza).
  18. Grab a roll of paper towels and make plans for an early lunch on the side of the road -- if you're lucky enough to work in Howard County. Right outside the entrance to the Savage MARC station is a guy with a pull-behind barbecue serving up delicious meats at roadside prices. I ate pulled pork Monday after being clued in by George Berkheimer of the The Business Monthly. David Welch had platters of meat cooking, and he pulled the pork off the bone to build an enormous sandwich for me. Then he left me to doctor it up with spicy sauce and his personal spice mixture. This is moist, firm meat coming right off the heat. It is a rich smokey flavor, but it's truly just pork. You really want to add spice and sauces -- maybe sauce in the bottom of the container -- so that you can dip and alternate flavors. My $6 sandwich was so large that I couldn't finish it off. I ate until full, then shredded the leftovers into soup tonight. Dave runs a weekly rotation -- pulled pork Mondays, beef brisket Tuesdays, big pork chops Wednesdays, ribs Thursdays, and chicken Fridays. Six bucks for each except the $9-19 ribs. He also sells kielbasa, half smokes and sodas. He worked originally in upscale hotel kitchens, then started a hot dog stand and moved onto the current deal where he works this lunch crowd and does catering through Dave's BBQ and Catering out of Laurel. Dave was a generous host, searing a piece of skin into crackling. He talked about his competitive barbecue wins, including a 2006 Maryland state championship. The other customers talked up the brisket and a once-a-month special of jambalaya. Dave starts selling at 9 am. I assume he gets business from the truckers who start their days early between the wholesale markets in Jessup down through all the business parks along U.S. 1. Some days, he is sold out before noon. This is a perfect spot if you work somewhere near Fort Meade, and it's off-and-on Rte 32 so it's doable from anywhere in Columbia. I'm going back as soon as I can figure out how to be home on a different weekday. Expect posts on brisket, chops and ribs over time! The catering -- which includes sides, utensils, etc. -- seems like a deal starting at $11/13-a-head if you pick it up and running to $21/23-a-head with all-you-can-eat spreads run by a catering crew. The one flaw in my plan was that I didn't get a napkin from Dave. I ate in a parking lot before my next errand, and I was glad to find a clean rag after chomping through juicy meat that had soaked through the light roll. So get those paper towels and start driving.
  19. The Daily Dish They are located in the strip mall on Grubb Road, near the intersection with East-West, a few doors away from Parkway Deli in the old Red Dog space. Aside from the seasonal/local bent (the entrees do change frequently) they are somewhat distinguished by offering a full bar and vegan/vegetarian-friendly selections. In terms of the kitchen's ambitions and the ambiance/decor, I regard them as slightly more casual than nearby 8407. We've been maybe 1/2 dozen times. It's always a bit of an afterthought for us. We go when we want something relaxed and close to home, and we've grown temporarily fatigued with the places in our usual rotation. Last Thursday evening, our party of 3 had a very pleasant meal. It was particularly delightful to sit just inside open garage door up front so we could enjoy the cool evening air. We each started with a vegan soup of the day. Both my companions had the tomato, which they liked very much. I had the potato/leek, which would have been improved with the addition of heavy cream , but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Both the crab cake (appetizer) and lamb shank (entree) were deemed good by my dining companions. I had a sauteed softshell crab entree that, while not iconic, was well-prepared and satisfied a craving I've been suffering for several days (NB: at $30, it was the most expensive item on the menu). For libations, we enjoyed a margarita (The Classic) and Flying Dog Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale, which was on draft. If it were as close to home as our other regular haunts, we would probably dine at TDD more often. Over time, it has proved to be a good option for us when we need to break away from our routine.
  20. Is this the best Indian anywhere? No? Is this something you would trek far and wide for? No. But it is good Indian food served up by a friendly staff. They have quite a menu to choose from and their specials are quite good. I recently had their shrimp and salmon tandoori and it was really delicious. I generally have shied away from their Thai offerings, I am not sure why -- I just recognize the place most often with Indian food and that is what I stick with. On the weekends, they have a good buffet, too, if youprefer to graze on a variety of things, with stuff represented from both the Indian and Thai menus (heavier on the Indian). Their carry out portion sizes and good as well. While I wouldn't go out of your way to find this, this is a good choice for Indian in Laurel (so if you're in the area or passing through and have said craving). I prefer it for many dishes as opposed to say, India Gate (also in Laurel).
  21. Perhaps check out Fork on Market- 3rd and Market - a convivial bistro open 7 days a week(Old City- also where Amada is on Chestnust so you just can't go wrong in the area). A great location to grab a drink too- 2nd St.
  22. To all those employers: The Professional Bartending School is an excellent source for employers. Our employment services are free to employers. I just noticed that Ridgewells/Purple Tie hired at least 15 graduates for the Holiday Season, plus additional events. We did a blast for them in mid August. I think they are pretty well staffed up now for the holidays. Our placement services do not charge for accessing our grads. We don't "do contracts" We do have a current data base of about 1300 graduates who are looking for employment, from parties and special events to part-time and full-time employment. We are expanding that. Employers of all sorts throughout the DC metro region (and beyond) use our services ranging from looking for part-time to full time bartenders. The grads range from new to some with over a decade of experience. They received a 40 hour hands on program, TAM alcohol management training, and customer service training. We don't claim they are the best bartenders in the world. We know that. But they are great for training. We are fulfilling a request now for an "artisan" bartender/manager who will uptrain a grad or two.   23. Website Here. Fulton Thread Here. After tasting a skim iced chai at Sidamo yesterday I thought to myself... how can I get them to put one of these in Old Town. The chai was the best I have ever had. Spicy and full bodied, made with real chai tea. You didn't even notice the type of milk selection because all you could taste was how good the tea was. I wish I was a coffee drinker because I bet they make great coffee just from smelling them roast and grind it. Ginger molasses cookies... lovely. I also stole a sip of one of the smoothies, we were taking to a friend. Very fresh with real fruit. I love the atmosphere and back patio. They had a nice little menu and by how good the place smelled something on the menu has to be good. I look forward to going back here more often. I just really wish it was closer to my house. * I didn't see a thread for Sidamo, if there is one please merge.
