  1. I often poke fun at Tom Sietsema for his disregard of Lebanese and Levantine cuisine in our area. But he just did a very nice review of Zenola in Vienna. It's on my list for a try-out in the next few weeks, but his review probably complicated the reservations list. The owner ran Cafe Paradiso for a while, and is now settled into the former Le Canard pace in Vienna. I'm dying to have a few plates of the Kibbeh Nayyeh. See --> Zenola.
  2. we've been busy during the time you haven't seen me post here. this dinner was in mid-April 2022. pix are from my IG. dungeness crab cocktail oysters rockefeller steak, vegetables petrale sole, vegetables chocolate mousse cake the place was half-full when we were there and had a limited menu edit - this is the location in San Francisco. @DonRocks - can you please move this to the right forum?
  3. This thread is one of the few I could find with a reference to U Street Music Hall, so I will place it here: Closed. I saw some good shows at U Street, it will be missed.
  4. For any 40+ oenophile around Baltimore, The Milton Inn's closing is a huge loss. I haven't been here in probably fifteen years, but I've dined here - with untold number of wines - at least five times. Every time I drive by it - admittedly not that often - I'll have fond memories tinged with sadness.
  5. "Part of Georgia Avenue Will Close Temporarily To Allow Outdoor Dining" by Mike Diegel on sourceofthespring.com "A portion of Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring will be temporarily closed as of 5 p.m. June 12 to allow restaurants additional space to provide customers outdoor dining. The right lanes of Georgia will be shut down between Silver Spring and Thayer avenues in a pilot project that will run through at least June 21. The pilot, known as Streetdine, is the result of a collaboration between the State Highway Administration, the Silver Spring Urban District, County Council Vice President Tom Hucker (D-District 5) and local business owners."
  6. Has anyone wondered why the outlandishly luxurious Indian restaurant, Punjab Grill (website), just ... appeared? Did you know this wasn't their first restaurant in the Washington, DC area? The corporation behind it also owns American Tandoor (website) in Tysons Corner, which just closed suddenly, and without explanation. Jan 23, 2020 - "American Tandoor Temporarily Closes in Tysons Corner Center" by Catherine Douglas Moran on tysonsreporter.com American Tandoor is owned by Lite Bite Foods (website), a huge corporation in India. Lite Bite Foods also owns Punjab Grill, which has numerous locations in India (website), and if you click on the "Locations" link (bottom-right), you'll be taken to the "Institutional Catering Outlets" section of their website (although they apparently feature "Bespoke Catering" (website)). Lite Bite Foods has, according to their website, "a scale of over passionate 3500 employees." (I don't know if that's missing a hypen, or two words need to be flipped). They're also in partnership with Subway, PVR Cinemas, etc. - they own or manage over 300 restaurants (if you mill around their Indian corporate website, you can find out a lot), and I doubt they're shedding too many tears over the "temporary" closure of American Tandoor. But, in case anyone was wondering how or why someone spent so much money on decorating Punjab Grill, here's your answer. The opening chef here is apparently quite talented, and it would be wise to go on an off-night when you know he's running the kitchen and not slammed. Is this the "game-changing restaurant" Food and Wine (website) declared it to be last year? This company appears to be about volume and making money (although you could say the same thing about LVMH (website), who owns some of the most revered brands in the world (take a look at them - they're a remarkable collection) so who knows).
  7. "Bryan Caswell Suddenly Closes His Midtown Seafood Restaurant" by Eric Sandler on houstonculturemap.com
  8. http://bvfarmfood.com/ 8am-9pm daily Went to Bon Vivant with the Momma. I had forgotten Evening Star wasn't open for lunch, and we decided to try somewhere we hadn't been before instead of wandering down to Cheesetique. I got a pear and walnut salad with pulled chicken. Momma got a flank steak salad. The salad was good, but the fancy way they put the dressing on which looks very nice, isn't super practical. Next time I will just ask for dressing on the side and mix it in myself, and ask for some cracked pepper. The chicken was very good though. The salad itself was fine, if a bit boring, the dressing issue just meant it could use some seasoning. I think Mom's was likely a bit of the same. I should have gotten a sandwich- I just didn't want to spend the WW points on bread. I really like that they have nice real size glasses in the dining room with water, that is really nice. This place had a few groups meeting in the space and had a big table in the back. They were doing a decent take out business, there seem to be a lot of people in Del Ray looking for healthy options, and this would fit that, they also have some vegetarian and vegan options, more vegetarian than vegan.
  9. Sad news. Trickling Springs Creamery, my favorite local ice cream is shutting down. "Trickling Springs Creamery Is Abruptly Closing" by Anna Spiegel on washingtonian.com
  10. Macdara's Grille, which was in the Squire's Rock Creek Chophouse space after Squire's closed, appears to have closed in February. I noticed today signage on the space for Hakuna Matata Grill, which bills itself on its Facebook page as authentic East African cuisine (but judging by the page not necessarily or not only Ethiopian). I didn't notice if they were open, but also judging from the Facebook page it looks like not quite yet. Their website is still under construction.
  11. I'm very much looking forward to a French place. I've heard Chez Billy Sud is an excellent restaurant. Hope they bring that mojo to Arlington.
  12. Pat, you probably know this, but others may not: Port City Java is a Wilmington, NC based franchise (not a chain) that was established in 1995. As of this writing, they have numerous locations in (primarily Eastern) NC, and one in Greenville, SC.
  13. I swear I made a previous thread for Catch on the Ave, but I can't find it. We have gone twice now- once with BIL and SIL, and once with my Mom. I can't remember what we all had the first time we went, but we liked it enough to go back! I remember they had good cocktails. On the last visit, Hubby had fish tacos. They had soft shells, and I asked if I could have them on a sandwich. They had run a special earlier that week with a pimento cheese/ softshell sandwich, so I go that. This would have been better with less pimento cheese, to be honest, I love soft shells and should have protested more and seen if I could have just gotten a more plain sandwich. I expect this sandwich was because a lot of people find soft shells a little more creepy than I do. It was fine, it was just perhaps a little over-decadent and you lost the crab flavor. Mom had the lobster salad which she said was really good. This is a nice little neighborhood spot with above average food for Del Ray. We like the ability to get something a little fancier or a little more causal for dinner, and they have a nice beverage list, and you can generally get in.
  14. "Lupa, Restaurant that Replaced Petit Louis in Columbia, To Close this Weekend after a Year in Business" by Sarah Meehan on baltimoresun.com This was in the former Red Pearl space, which was in the former Jessie Wong's Hong Kong space.
  15. We got delivery from Charlie's on the Avenue, chicken parm sandwich, wings, and Hubby got a po-boy, I forget what. The wings were smoked and were very good. The chicken parm sandwich could have been better if there was just a bit more sauce. But things were good and very affordable and delivery was quick. I would go there some night and chill. Anyway, I didn't see a thread on it, their website is here.

  17. http://www.scottsrestaurants.com 927 F Street NW Opened mid-November. I love the concept but it's certainly one that's had a bunch of failures in the past around here. Commonwealth from Jamie Leeds came and went. And British feel with Scotch club and eyes on rapid expansion didn't work out too well for Againn. Inside Penn Quarter’s Cozy Newcomer, Scotts Restaurant and Bar (Eater DC, Nov 14, 2018; Tierney Plumb) A British invasion in Washington, with meat trolleys, Scotch eggs and more (Washington Post, Dec 7, 2018; Tom Sietsema, First Bite)

  20. I went over to the Twin Towers to The Great Eatery, the buffet and sandwich place, and they posted a sign that August 31 would be their last day after ten years. Although I think the cause is mainly the movement of various businesses on the Mall level due to the expansion of the WJLA empire, I am sorry to see it go, particularly as a similar buffet place at the Rosslyn Metro Center closed several months ago. Now, aside from a sandwich shop on the street level, a fairly large complex has no interior dining options. There are still food trucks along Wilson Boulevard and assorted take out places in the block across Wilson, but it is sad when a business closes that was at least convenient.
