  1. MissCindy beat me to it! I'd head over to Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood too, which is not in the Inner Harbor - it's at 1065 S. Charles. They expanded last year and now they have over 90 barstools, as well as picnic-style tables, and six tvs - including a couple of big screens - I was assured that the games will be on. They have a sushi bar, raw bar, and fried and steamed seafood, even pit beef coming out of the kitchen. They stay open until 11pm on Friday nights. It doesn't get any more Baltimore than this place.Easy drive to BWI.
  2. Metropolitan Coffee House and Wine Bar is great. Federal Hill, not Inner Harbor, but close by. Casual, coffee shop atmosphere, but nice friendly spot with good breakfast foods. 902 South Charles at Henrietta.
  3. A new restaurant opened on Hanover St in Federal Hill, the BlueGrass tavern. Since it's a few blocks from my house, I've been twice already. The chef, Patrick comes from Ryleigh's Oyster, and he seems to be subscribing to the local food movement and he's also interested in making some in house charcuterie as well. On my first trip- I just went for a light supper. They have a nice selection of small and medium plates on the menu, I ordered the bacon jam on crostini (reminded me of Kevin from last season's Top Chef). It was really good- sweet, salty, smokey. I then ordered a fresh asparagus salad and the bison carpacchio. Both were very nice. The chef spotted me as a food person (the camera was a giveaway), so he came out, greeted me, and offered for me to try something off the menu. It was slices of corned beef heart with cornichons and aioli. Very nice. pic For desssert, I had the strawberry rhubarb pie with basil ice cream. Went back for dinner with friends another evening. This round, tried his two charcuterie plates- my favorites were his duck speck, the chicken livers, and the duck rilletes. The best item, I had was the foie gras prep for the evening- seared foie gras, in between two pancakes, with egg and bacon, and maple syrup- a foie gras McGriddle. I also tried my friends dishes- the antelope loin with redeye gravy was nice, lean, and the chicken fried quail salad was good too. This time for dessert, we had the banana creme pie which was very good. I would say, this place is very promising for the Federal Hill neighborhood. blog/pics 1500 S. 4. website Baltimore Sun review The sister restaurant of La Cuchara, I haven't been yet but I've gotten enough raving reviews from my friends that we probably deserve a thread
  5. Late night this past Saturday, I went with a group to the recently opened Hersh's Pizza & Drinks in the South edge of Federal Hill. The chef, Josh Hershkovitz, who used to work at Charleston & Petit Louis, opened the place with his sister to serve Neapolitan style pizza. They also feature housemade sausage and pasta on the menu. Their menu features a good selection of beer as well as an interesting array of cocktails. I started with a Fernando, made with Fernet Branca Galliano, & Cinzano. We chatted with Stephanie, the chef's sister and co-owner, a little. She recommended the cheese pizza with fried eggplant and sausage. We also tried the kale & pistachio pizza and the white clam pizza. The crust on their pizza was outstanding- thin, with a little bite and chewinesss. I read in the City Paper that they do not do lunch as the starter takes 24 hours to be ready. My favorite was the kale & pistachio with fontina and a lot of garlic. The fried eggplant also makes for a great topping. They had run out of their pasta that evening, but they let us try some of their Berkshire pork ragu- quite good. As this place is a short walk from my house, I look forward to making this a regular hangout. 1843-45 Light Street Baltimore MD 21230 443-438-4948
  6. Baltimore Restaurant Week officially kicks off this Friday 1-12 and runs through 1-21. As someone who used work during this madness, please be kind to your the service staff, and honor the reservation. I won't lecture you all on making multiple plans at several restaurants, but please be judicious in making your plans. A great deal of planning both for FOH as well as BOH goes into executing a great restaurant week. Enjoy all that Baltimore has to offer, Hon!! Restaurant Week veteran, kat
  7. I've heard that the pizza menu at Barfly's in Federal Hill is essentially the same pizza from Matthew's. the owners of the place used to own Matthew's and basically transported the menu from there to his bar. I live within a few blocks from Barfly's, so I'll try to check this out the next few weeks.
  8. Last week, I went to the Don't Know Tavern in Federal Hill for drinks and some food. The place is a sister bar to No Idea also in the neighborhood. My only beef is that it prides itself in being a Red Sox & Patriots bar - in Baltimore of all places! Anyways, my friends had heard some good things about the food at the bar. It was good- a bit too greasy, but a little bit better than your usual bar food in South Baltimore. My friend got the warm spinach salad- they liked it, but felt there was a little too much bacon dressing. I got the cream of crab and asparagus soup- this was really good- a ton of crabmeat, and a nice blend with the asparagus. For entrees, I got the grilled cheese- 4 cheeses, tomato and bacon- pretty yummy. My tablemates got the kobe beef sliders which were pretty good as well, and the meat pizza- with capicola, bacon, sausage, filet mignon, goat cheese and parmesan. The pizza's crust could have been better, but it wasn't too bad. We also tried the duck fat fries that were tasty, but so greasy. Overall, the food was pretty inexpensive- nothing over $10- not to shabby for a place i can walk to from my house.
  9. For breakfast sort of near the Inner Harbor (Fell's Point), you absolutely can't beat the Blue Moon Cafe (1621 Aliceanna St Baltimore, MD 21231). Small place with amazing biscuits, great coffee, great atmosphere. Due to its popularity, the lines can get long, but it's well worth the wait.
  10. SoBo Cafe has been mentioned a few times in various threads dating back to 2006, but it's high time it gets a listing of its own. SoBo is, to me, the perfect neighborhood restaurant, offering elevated comfort food at an affordable price. For lunch, they offer various soups, salads, flatbreads, and sandwiches, that are all well-balanced, filling, and delicious. I'm a fan of the smoked salmon salad and the BLT on a biscuit. For dinner, you can get some incredible deals during happy hour (5-7 pm) at the bar or outdoor tables. A few select appetizers, like Mac-N-Cheese and mussels, are roughly half priced ($4-$5), and 2 or 3 could easily constitute a meal; I'm not sure if they are smaller than the full-priced versions, but the portions are plenty generous. And you certainly won't break the bank if you go with the regular entrees, the most expensive of which sits at $24. Most of the food is pure comfort (burger, chicken, steak, salmon), expertly prepared but with just enough of a twist to keep things interesting. The one dish that got me off my lazy behind long enough to write this review was the Mushroom Stuffed Chard with quinoa, beech mushrooms, herb spätzle, and porcini jus. Visually, this isn't much to look at, resembling two oversized dolmades in a thin layer of brown soup. But my first bite instantly invoked (and I don't say this lightly) two dishes I recently had at Kinship - the torchon of white mushroom, for how deliciously meaty I never knew mushrooms (and quinoa!) could be, and the Kinship stroganoff, for the rich heartiness of the entree, as well as the spätzle/mushroom pairing. The chard was wrapped around a mixture of minced mushrooms and quinoa, which gave the sensation of a light and fluffy vegetarian meatloaf. The flavors were rich, mushroomy, and meaty, not particularly subtle but incredibly satisfying. This was so much food and so filling that I could barely finish my plate, and at just $16, may be my greatest enjoyment to dollar cost ratio in recent memory (I also started with a $6 bowl of very good carrot soup and some bread with incredible whipped butter). I have yet to leave room for dessert, but I have high expectations for one of these days. For a more than fair price, you can get real food prepared with expertise and care. It's no wonder SoBo Cafe has been going strong for the past 10 years and counting.
  11. Went to Mr. Rain's Fun House, a new restaurant that opened late 2009 on top the the American Visionary Art Museum. They had a special La Grande Boucherie happy hour in celebration of mardi gras- $15 for several pork courses. It was ok. We started with head cheese served with bread and some honey mustard (?). Course 2 was some hunter sausage- a tad dry- possibly the meat was ground a bit too fine. Third was some pulled pork off a whole pig they roasted. Sadly a but dry as well, but he skin as nicely seasoned. Last was Tasso ham- it was a alright as well, but I still do not understand honey mustard. What was nice was a flight of American whiskeys- my favorite was the Rittenhouse rye. Not sure about the restaurant, but might head back to try their regular menu at least once.
  12. Surprised no one has posted on this place in Baltimore. Late last year, they opened up The Abbey Burger Bistro on Cross St. in Federal Hill. They use local Roseda farm beef for their burgers and they also make their own chips. While you can decide on your own toppings, they also have some unique burger offerings. The Harry's Bistro burger has bacon, cheddar, and fried egg served with an English Muffin. Messy but good. They also have a peanut butter burger with bacon- surprisingly delicious. I've also tried their Hudsdon Valley foie gras burger. They also serve homemade ice cream which is excellent. I once had their Berger Cookie shake- made with vanilla ice cream and spiked with Vanilla Stoli and Godiva Liqueur. While service on busy nights (weekends) is pretty slow because the bartenders are the waiters, it's worth checking out if you're in the area. pics 1041 Marshall Street Baltimore, MD 21230 443-453-9698
