  1. No website that I could find, so here is their twitter: @HolyCrepesTruck Le Menu is here. This truck has been visiting a parking lot near my office the last couple of weeks. I have gone twice, and found both of my savory crepes delicious. The pesto aioli has been in both, and it's phenomenal. Today's was bacon, ham, mozzarella, onion, tomato, aioli. I have never had a savory crepe before but these are nice and crispy on the outside and you can almost eat them like a burrito until gravity and wet ingredients collapse the last few bites which are then finished with a fork. Being able to text my order and run to grab it when it was ready is a nice feature, especially when it's -37 degrees with wind chill.
  2. So there's really no thread on this place? Really? Just outside the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, there's an old school bus that's been retrofitted to serve as a food truck, and from this bus come what are, for my money, the greatest pork ribs in the Metro area. They're smoky, meaty, a little fatty, and overall just flat-out delicious. The meat is still on the bone, but comes off with little resistance, just as it should. You can get them sauced, but there's really no need; the sauce is nothing particularly outstanding, and frankly, the ribs don't need it. $20 gets you a slab of pork ribs, which on this occasion today was more than enough to serve two hungry friends. To go along with the no-frills-ness of the place, you get just humble slices of white bread go along with your ribs. If you're less hungry, $9.95 gets you a rib dinner with a pair of sides. There's other offerings too, such as the apparently fantastic beef rib tips, but I can't get past the pork ribs. They're literally that good. This is about as far from fine dining as you can get: everything served in styrofoam containers, and the only thing resembling a table and chairs is the nearest curb, but even if it's just once, you really need to make the trip.
  3. What a great post, Kibee! I'd have just liked it with a button click but wanted to also share Chef Brandon's twitter feed since his facebook page might confuse people. The latter says the truck opens in a May but Twitter makes clear he's open at Courthouse now. I hope this wins him some support. We need to support young pros like this. @BLTfoodtruck I'm not sure if we create new topics for food trucks but, if we do, maybe cool to start one for him?
  4. If an award were to be given for the strangest, most incongruous menu items in the food truck category, I think Urban Bumpkin BBQ would win hands down. I've only tried one dish from them so I won't comment on the food, but I will just say that their "bubble lemonade" was delicious. Lemonade with some sort of tart bubbles that burst in your when bitten (definitely not tapioca, but I didn't get a chance to ask what they were).
  5. Alright, got something delicious for y'all. I was running around all day doing errands and whatever and ended up hungry as hell in the Catonsville area, I've seen this brown and beige halal food truck parked in the same spot for years( in the Walmart parking lot up near route 40 and rolling.) but never stopped in. Decided what the heck, pulled up and hopped out into the rain and ordered up a lamb kabob which came with salad and that rice with the raisins an carrots which I have no idea what it's called. Nine bucks and I was told the best news ever from a food truck with no line, "be about 10-12 min" . So I get my styrofoam box and chow down, the rice is perfect, salad is crisp and the lamb is amazing, tender and charred and juicy, like 6 big chunks. It came with two cups of sauce, one raita and one I thought was a chutney of sorts, wrong guess. It was spicy as all hell, but made it that much better. You gotta check these dudes out, they have beef kabob chicken, butter chicken, gyros, and for the hell of it cheese steaks burger subs and ice cream treats. Although I didn't get one it was nice to see the good humor toasted almond.
  6. wandering around other parts of the web, came across a blurb about a food truck rodeo on June 6 in the Seminary Towers parking lot. Running time 11-7, so it says. Among others, Port City, Red Hook, Sinplicity are bringing their trucks. Facebook page
  7. And I have no idea how far from opening they are, but Far East Taco on 15th Street just south of H has their sign up. I'll walk by and check out the building some time this week to see how close they look.
  8. This truck has started to show up fairly regularly at my office, so I finally gave it a try. I can only vouch for the brisket at this point in time, but it's top notch. Really great smoky flavor and just the right level of tenderness, neither falling apart nor chewy. Choice of sweet or spicy sauce, I went spicy. It wasn't overly so, but had god flavor and just a bit of zing. This brisket crushes the likes of Urban. Also on the menu were pulled pork and chicken, and a handful of sides: beans, slaw, fries. It looks like the menu varies as I saw a menu with more options previously. http://www.hardysbbq.com/
  9. How can you not like a pizzeria named Nomad Romana? I keep thinking of that "thing" on Star Trek, floating around the ship, and saying, "I am ... Nomad." Nomad Pizza Company is a chain with one outlet near Starr Garden Park, another in Hopewell, NJ, and a 1949 REO Speedwagon Pizza Truck to boot (picture an old codger kicking the tires - that's the "to boot" part I am sorry). Nomad Romana is their first attempt at Roman-style pizza - I'd love to hear from a trained pizzaiolo about how true it is to the genre.
  10. Rusty's is my single favorite bbq place in the DC area. It's just a food truck in the middle of Route 3 - 704 Rt 3 in Gambrills. Been open about a year and half - initially no seating but they added a few picnic tables early this year. The pork ribs are what you want - they're simply fantastic. The spicy sauce - just the right mix of spicy and sweet - complements the ribs extremely well. The chicken and pulled pork are really good too, but can't match the ribs. The sides are a real strong point, especially the baked beans and potato salad. I must admit I've been disappointed with the brisket. Just too lean for my taste. Chopped, not sliced. I learned on my last visit that they mix the lean and fatty sides of the brisket when chopping the brisket, but that you can request either the fatty/lean alone. So I'll probably give the brisket one more shot. The place draws people from both DC and Baltimore, it's that good. Having been to a bunch of local bbq including Hill Country, Rocklands, Pit Stop, George's Ribs, Slab o'Ribs, Buzz and Ned's, and BBQ Exchange, this is still my favorite spot in the area. http://rustysribsnbbq.com/
  11. I drove by this the other day, but this post on Prince of Petworth reminded me to post something here. There's been a lot of work going on at Chupacabra, and they look as if they're relatively close to opening.
  12. I think the noodles from the food truck Pho Wheels are probably the best noodles I've ever had in a bowl of pho. But while I find their pho tasty, it's their pork belly bahn mi on croissant bun with a fried egg that makes my mouth water, and keep me hitting refresh on their twitter feed. http://www.phowheelsdc.com/
  13. Don't bother with Burgorilla. I'm sorry I tried them today.. Someone had a heavy hand with the salt shaker and they were too firmly packed for an 80/20 mix. Points to them for the true medium rare temp, though didn't make a difference when it's packed so firmly. Dorothy Moon's are much better burgers. The last one I had was packed loosely and was nearly falling out of the bun. And temp doesn't matter when they are juicy--it was a delicious messy mess.
  14. Quality food truck lunch today from Rebecca's Ethiopian. A pleasant surprise, as I had resigned myself to choosing from the local row of food trucks today after cancelling a lunchtime bike trip. Rebecca's does not appear to have a Twitter account or any other online presence. There is an Ethiopian restaurant and grocery with the same name up in Hyattsville, to which I'm guessing the truck is related. Ordered the Meat Combo, ($9.99, tax included) which actually comes out looking better than the picture on the side of the truck. It's a combination of Beef and Chicken wot (the truck uses the Ethiopian words like "doro," but I always struggle to keep straight which is which) with a hard-boiled egg, and a choice of any two of the vegetables (I went with the Kiki Alicha (split peas in a turmeric sauce) and the Gomen (collard greens), and requested extra injera on the side. The truck offers a number of other dishes -- no kitfo, but beef and lamb tibs, a tilapia choice, and several others. Those ordering the tibs were asked if they wanted "spicy" or "mild" -- that choice wasn't given to me, but the wots had excellent zing without leaving me back in my office with a burning tongue. Leftovers will make a fine second meal. Visa and Mastercard are accepted via Square. I'll definitely be looking out for this truck again.
  15. City Paper reporting that Tacos El Chilango is now open. Run by Mexico City natives and brothers Jesus Santacruz and Juan Antonio. Apparently their food truck has been rocking the Yelp vote. Menu here Tacos El Chilango, 1119 V St. NW; (202) 986-3030
  16. Here we go - their website. They appear to be somewhat related to Hula Girl, but to be honest, I wasn't paying attention when they talked about it. For busy season this year my company has had food trucks coming by our parking lot to serve dinner. I've skipped the previous ones this week for various reasons (Tasty Kabob, DC Slices, and Hula Girl) but tonight was DC Empanadas and they included a Curbside Cupcake. I got two of the Ropanada "“ Ropa Vieja Style Shredded Beef with Rice Tossed in a Tomato Based Sauce. These are deep fried, but not very greasy at all. I enjoyed it quite a bit, not too saucy or too dry, though I could've gotten used some hot sauce. They also offered The Badass "“ Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese (which many of my coworkers enjoyed quite a bit), Tio Shawn "“ Black Beans, Rice, Monterrey Jack Cheese, Chipotle Peppers and Onions (I didn't see anyone order that), coleslaw (not mayo based, tasty though), and various drinks (yay Coke Zero). As mentioned elsewhere I got the Cookies and Cream cupcake, and it was awesome. Now to try to make it home without falling asleep. --- [The following posts have been split into separate threads: Capital Empanadas Food Truck (thetrain)]
  17. Fasika Food Truck, $9.99 gets you a 4 dish veggie sampler with three piece of injera, two rolled and one as the serving piece. Very respectable. Best $9.99 I've spent on food truck food so far.
  18. I'm eating my very first one as I type, from a food truck parked with a bunch of others, on Mass Ave near Union Station. Lots of food for $8, and pretty tasty. I think the truck is called Krazy Koshary and I got the basic with beef.
  19. Persian style food truck. You have your choice of meat over rice, salad or in a sandwich. Your choices are chicken or gyros. The gyros comes cubed. At first glance, the cubes look like layered meat, but I bet its just extruded meat stuff in a thin sheet folded up on itself to look more real. The chicken is real and very tasty. The gyros is good for that type of thing. I had the combo over salad which was advertised as a Shirazi salad, but had lettuce in it and not very much sumac. Nitpic: the hot sauce was not a Persian style but Sriracha. SUpermarket feta but at least not too much of it. WTF: black ripe olives out of a can? Overall, a nice $9.00 lunch but next time I'd do the chicken only and save a buck.
  20. I saw this hilarious truck parked in front of Walter Johnson high school today (Rockledge Drive in Bethesda): This particular one is owned by the same company that owns Party Warehouse, etc. They offer 35 flavors of shaved ice, and will drive right up to your party to complement your Moon Bounce. Snowie is a Utah company that will sell you a brand new bus for $78,900, with numerous variations.
  21. It should be noted that there are two empanada food trucks - the other being Capital Empanadas which is not good. at all. Do not make the mistake of eating at Capital Empanadas, which serves small, dry, overpriced empanadas that are only edible with copious amounts of green sauce.
  22. Pho Junkies...a zombie themed pho truck, new on the scene as of last week. Solid effort, broth could use some work, not much depth of flavor and on the salty side, but after adding all the condiments it was a tasty bowl of pho. Ordered the #4, bowl of pho with three meats (went with tendon, tripe and meat ball...$10). Meat wise it was a little skimpy, wondering how much you would get if you went with some more substantial cuts like the flank steak or fatty brisket. Also got an order of spring rolls (two for $5), very good spring rolls. Price wise $15 for lunch is steep but I would rate them one of my better food truck meals.
  23. Dangerously Delicious Pies is coming to DC, opening very soon at 1339 H Street (next door to H St Country Club). They had hoped to open before Thanksgiving, but have not quite yet finished everything. Thanksgiving pies (apple, pecan, pumpkin, and sweet potato) are available now via telephone order at (202) 398-PIES. I haven't been to the Baltimore location, but I hear they are very popular, and they get some serious love in the dr.com thread on Pies. Here's what "thelistareyouonit" has to say about them:
  24. I happend to be in L'Enfant Plaza at lunch today and the Pepe food truck was there. Being a big fan of Jose Andres, I was excited to try it. The sandwich was very good, but I agreee Mary, the price was outrageous for what I got. I told the person at the window that I had never eaten here before and I wanted to get the best thing they had. She suggested the Pepito de Ternera (seared beef tenderloin, caramelized onion, piquillo pepper confit and blue cheese $14). I got it and it was a very tasty sandwich (lots of interesting flavor combinations) but for 14 bucks it should have been twice three times the size (or came with a drink and dessert). To their credit, it was much better than most of my food truck experiences from a taste/flavor perspective, but I don't see myself going back because of the price. The other thing that struck me a little strange was the lack of drinks. They only had Sangria or Pepe Tonic. No water.
