  1. Okay, so it's raison d'ètre isn't to be a restaurant, but many people don't know that HR-57 has a $3 corkage policy, and that's good enough to get my attention. HR-57 (House Resolution 57) recently closed it's location on 8th and H Street NE, and that location is going to be filled by Fever Bar & Lounge. HR-57 reopened last Friday in its new location, two blocks east.
  2. And I am once again starting a new thread about a Brookland restaurant! Smith Public Trust (in the space that used to be The Library, Kitty O'Shea's, and something else?), is in soft opening mode in Brookland right now on 12th St between Monroe and Newton. It's a sister restaurant to Smith Commons on H. I believe the soft opening runs through the World Cup and they have a limited menu available (I've been told the menu will be about 3 times as large upon full opening). The space is pretty interesting (see pics in the link above), with exposed brick, unfinished floors, murals, mismatched vintage furniture, etc. But they do have high chairs! I went during last week's USA vs Germany game for lunch and again last night for dinner with mixed results. Service has not been great either time. The servers and the GM have been very nice, but not necessarily the most attentive. Of the food I tried, my favorites have been the Edamame Hummus, the Nachos, and the Duck Spring Rolls. The Burger looked pretty good, but I didn't taste it. It's served with super thin cut matchstick fries that were pleasantly salty and crunchy. The bite I had of the Tacos tasted good, but there was way too much liquid (the tortillas fell apart and the plate was covered with a layer of juice at the end). My friend did not care for the Ramen (although he admitted Toki and Daikaya have spoiled him). The Fried Chicken and Red Velvet Waffle were ok (the chicken was piping hot and well seasoned, but the waffle was not hot...and I would've preferred some variety instead of two drumsticks). I'm unsure if they will expand their drink menu later. They have a good selection of beers on draft and in cans, but only 4 wines to choose from, and the two whites were chardonnay and riesling (meh). At this point I don't plan to rush back, but would like to return once the full menu is unveiled.
  3. For a nice bar scene, Ragtime has really good onion rings, if you ever have a craving for one. And it was a bonus that they had Bell's Oberon.
  4. On the way through Manassas this afternoon, hunger pangs attacked Lady KN and I, and Bella Vita was visible in a strip mall on the side of Liberia. A good meal was about to be had. First things first - this is not a chain, although there is a related restaurant in the Richmond area called Dolce Vita. Next, the interior is very nice. It's family friendly, but there are happy hour specials and a little bar off to the side of the entrance. Pictures of Frank and Dino on the walls -- and inexplicably, a picture of Bogart above the urinal -- and plenty of tempting dishes on the menu. Candy Sagon would be all over this place with one of her meaningless two-star reviews, and it qualifies for her purview -- lost in the Virginia suburbs and not really worth a review. Nonetheless, Lady KN and I had a competent snack, beginning with the appetizers of mussels (plump and flavorful) and calamari (nicely crisp and tasty). No lemon was provided for the calamari and no sopping bread was provided for the mussels, but these were easily corrected omissions. We followed with spot-on salads -- Wedge for Lady KN and Chef's for me -- and these were very good. They arrived on rectangular plates, so the the ingredients were nicely spread out instead of piled high. The competence of our dishes led me to peek at the menu and see if anything might compel me to return at some point, Pappardelle with Lamb Bolognese, Gnocchi Boscaiola, Scallops alla Brandy over Fettucini and a pizza named "The Butcher Shop" all caught my eye. More than likely, we'll try this place again at some point. http://bellavitaonline.com/
  5. I didn't see any thread on Annapolis in general, so I thought I would start one since I had a nice meal there this afternoon. Aqua Terra, near the top of the hill on Main St - not the typical "traditional Annapolis" feel on the inside and not the typical "crabcake and burger" menu either. I had a pulled bbq pork taco appetizer - two big fried wonton like shells with a healthy portion of shreeded duck in a smoky, hoisin based sauce with pickled carrots and radishes - and a crab salad - a fairly basic green salad in a good creamy dijon dressing and a heaping pile of jumbo lump crabmeat dressed in the same dressing. Aside from a few wedges of cottonny spring tomatoes this was a nice salad. But the duck was the highlight. Worth a stop if you're walking up and down Main st. some day and don't want a corned beef sandwich and vanilla malt at Chick and Ruth's across the street.
  6. Michael Klein of philly.com has reported that Tin Roof, a Nashville-based live music joint ("joint" seems to be an apt descriptor - it's to be three stories and 12,000-square-feet) will be opening across from Ladder 15 on Sansom Street.
  7. Checked out Black Whiskey last night and it's well worth a visit. Jack and Saeed behind the bar (think Bar Pilar, St Ex, Marvin, 18th St etc etc) serving up their usual levels of hospitality. Simple menu of carvery plates, choose a meat and then accompanying sides - simple but well executed and reasonably priced. Pool table at the end, which will inevitably be overused in the short term and a welcome diversion once the "cool" period finishes in a few months. The upstairs opens fully tonight and is worth a pop in, the downstairs looks a couple of months behind but has a good team to launch it and I have no doubt will be yet another popular spot on 14th.
  8. Bob and Barbara's Lounge. This place is for real -- even if last time I was there, an immaculately dressed family of French tourists came in, guidebook in hand, for the jazz. OK, maybe not for dinner. But for after.
  9. Please transform this topic into a post elsewhere if there is an established general thread about new places and transformations. However, last night I noticed copies of an application for a liquor license posted in the window of the McDonald's that closed some time ago, i.e. across from the Uptown, down a bit from an Italian restaurant on the corner whose logo is a winged lion. Does anyone know what's up at this location?
  10. Okay Rockwellians, I have been holding out on you. Yes. Believe it or not. I have found the perfect brunch place for me and it happens to be at a place I consider a dive bar. The menu is smallish but everything I have had has been extremely well executed and the dish I had today was out of this world. Today I had a gazpacho unlike any other I have had. Not only are there yummy tomatoes, it has chunks of peaches, cantalope and other fruits with a nice amount of heat thrown in from peppers. A very healthy brunch choice I would add. Oh you may be wondering with what is this gazpacho served? Well, let me tell you... the most fabulous corn cakes I have ever experienced. The corn cakes are a combination of cornbread and pancakes with crunchy fresh corn in the batter. YUM. The cakes are topped with smoked salmon and chive sour cream. The presentation alone makes the dish special but the taste makes it divine. I have had both the eggs benedict and eggs florentine which taste amazingly fresh. I know a weird adjective to describe a dish but sometimes egg dishes at restaurants don't taste all that fresh to me. The bacon is really good too. The fruit cup is a real treat because the chef shows a bit of whimsy with it. The price is right too for brunch as the entrees run $8.00 and the sides are $2.50. Plus they play really good music and if you have kids they have great video games for them to play. Larry the owner really wants this to be a family friendly brunch spot and has invested in high chairs and booster seats. Plus the place is non smoking during brunch. Oh and the food at night is really quite nice too but I love brunch so this is what I want to write. Brunch is on Saturday and Sundays from 11-3. YUMMMM...
  11. Red Hen is a sunny coffee shop along the main drag of tourist boutiques in Easton. They feature several single origin coffees brewed fresh using pour through technology. Good cup of Yirgacheffe Kochere from Ethiopia. This is the kind of chill relaxed coffee shop that DC-ites would like to see more of in DC. Didn't try any food, but they offer a variety of breakfast, sandwiches, and pastry items. Ajoining the coffee shop is a small cafe which doubles as a music venue called NightCat.
  12. Celebrating its 10th year, Danny Meyer's BABBP is loads of fun. Free music and cooking seminars, along with some famous pitmasters and the 'cue we all love, takes place June 9th and 10th this year. It's a bit of a zoo, but I've had a good time and eaten some pretty damn good BBQ over the last decade.
  13. It's actually still empty. That area is getting a bit harder to re-lease, I think. Hopefully, the new construction of the plaza that burnt down a year ago will help encourage more small businesses or mom-n-pop restaurants. Bangkok Blues closed nearly a year ago. (FCNP)

  15. Simply to ensure it does not continue un-reported in the Dining Guide, prior to a dance class last night, I had dinner at the bar at Nick's nightclub on Pickett Street. On tap, Shiner Bock ($2.50, i guess the HH price) and Bud. Several other offerings in bottles. Looking at the bottom shelf, they must sell a helluva lotta cheap flavored vodka. Probably 30 half-gallon bottles of the swill were lined up in all their various flavors. It makes me think there must be a whole lot of 16-17 year olds masquerading on fake IDs in there on the weekends. The barman said most of it got mixed into pineapple juice things. <shudder> Menu is pub grub with a Tex-Mex slant. I decided to try the BBQ quesadilla. The runner who brought it out claimed to have smoked it himself. He did not menion if he was smoking anthing else. It came with bagged tortilla chips, some sour cream and salsa. The salsa was very pureed in texture and tasted mostly of lime juice. The beef was tender and chunky, the sauce a sweet smoky tomato-based thing, but the overwhelming taste was that of pickled jalapenos. After a couple of bites, that was the only flavor I could discern. I didn't come across any chunks of the jalapeno, so someone must have thought it a good idea to dump the juice into the vat of BBQ meat. No cheese and the sour cream did nothing to improve things. I've got 7 more weeks of this class. It's supposed to be 1/2 price burgers on Wednesdays -- none of the fancy ones, just reg. hamburgers & cheeseburgers, so I may try one of those next week. Verdict: If you want really sweet cheap drinks and to ogle underage wannabe cowgirls, this may be the perfect spot. Otherwise, just be glad I'm taking one for the team.
  16. Taliano's has been closed for several months now. It's supposed to be replaced with condos.
