Well, I'm off to Ocean City for our annual summer vacation and I was looking forward to all of those good, but bad for you things I love to sample at the beach. I thought a thread sharing our OC beach favs would be fun as most of the food is shlock, but there are lots of junk food and hidden gems. Here are my favs: Junk Food Dumser's Dairyland - great hot fudge sundaes (multiple locations) Fisher's Popcorn - caramel corn (multiple locations) Candy Kitchen - good fudge (the Starbucks of OC, one on every corner almost) Thrasher's - amazing fries (Boardwalk) Restaurants Captain's Table - great seafood (downtown near Boardwalk) Jimmy's Kitchen - breakfast (north, Fenwick Island) The Hobbit - great lump crabcakes (north in the 90s) Higgins - crab feasts (133rd and a downtown location) Not sure why I've never been before, but I'm looking forward to trying the Fractured Prune's made to order donuts (128th and farther downtown too). Though we were generally operating in the Fish Tales-type space, Rosenfeld's Jewish Deli was easily the best meal had this week. Two eggs any style (5.95) were perfectly over-easy with a chewy, tangy, dense bagel and potato latkes that contrasted a crisp exterior with fluffy interior. Sit outside in the morning and watch the Coastal Highway traffic slowly come to life with sea breezes to accompany--this may be the most comfortable and sated you will be all day. I went back two mornings later, wanting to leave the City on a high note, had a two eggs bagel sandwich (5.95 + 1.00 for Swiss cheese), which performed as well. Coffee came from a very industrial-looking burner but was of pleasantly moderate strength and temperature. The person behind the counter was warm, cared about the business she was getting, and had none of the indifference seen at nearly every other establishment visited. -
Any suggestions on good places to stay in Ocean City? I'd like to make a return trip with the family this summer, but don't want to pay for the Hilton again. I've heard Carousel is nice...

Mr P started his new job in Holmdel a few weeks ago, and reports the pickin's 're mighty slim up that way. Since he's too shy to post, I thought I'd ask where the man can get a decent dinner in that area. He'll be there one to three days a week for a while. Thanks.

Location and Rates for Tonight - Website with Best-Rate Guarantee This is a new hotel, on the bay, at 25th Street. It's a very easy walk to the beach, even though it traverses a couple main roads. Also, it's aligned with the end of the boardwalk, and thus provides easy access to that aspect of OC. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms come with a solid full, hot, buffet breakfast. Beware that the pool is a sham: sure, there is one, but it's so small I doubt you could fit more than 8 kids in it. We like to regularly incorporate the pool into our beach vacations, so this was disappointing. They are also in dire need of an outside shower or hose, to assist with getting off the sand. Still, the hotel is shiny and new, with breakfast, and in a great location, so you could do a lot worse. -
So last week was my week in Bethany. We didn't really eat out much this time, but met friends at Seacrets. It certainly wasn't for the food, not for getting s***t faced, but it was for the novelty of eating outside under full sized palm trees with a sand floor. It was the first time I had been there in probably a decade. Time has pretty much stood still (G-Love and Special Sauce was the headliner band that night). It is also a different experience when you are there with your child, and they hand you the "rules" for being there with someone underage (kind of funny considering my daughter is 5. They just opened a distillery on-site in June, which is new. Okay, now on to the food--it was pretty bad and the service was pretty bad as well. My wife and another friend had salads, one topped with grilled shrimp, the other with tuna. The first time they made the salad with the tuna, it cam with tuna salad. They acknowledged the mistake, re-made it, asked how the tuna should be cooked and it came about 15 minutes later well done. Regardless, they comped it which was nice. I had "Jamaican Tenders" and a side of fries. They were pretty dried out, not very spicy, not very good to say the least, and pretty puny. Someone else got a veggie wrap which looked pretty good and they seemed to like it. Bottom line--don't come here for the food, some here for the ambiance or to get a frozen rum drink called a "Pain in the Ass", served in a plastic cup and sit in an oasis like setting with a canopy of palm trees and a sand floor. If you don't take yourself too seriously and you enjoy the company you are with, you will have a good time at this classic. -
Location and Rates for Tonight - Website We rented #603 in the Antigua condo building at 8500 Coastal highway. The building, overall, was fine. Easy check in, they have carts to help unload/load your stuff, and the elevators (2) were quick and responsive. That said, the building does show its age, and could use a fresh coat of paint (at least). The pool is nothing fancy, just a big circular hole in the ground, 4ft - 8ft deep. It's not the biggest pool, but had plenty of room for all those that want to use it (most people are at the beach, anyway). It's private and closed in with a fence, and there's a staffer outside monitoring access. No lifeguard at the pool. There's beach access (a dune crossing) right behind the building, and there's plenty of space. There's also a lifeguard stationed right there, which is comforting. The condo (2br, 2ba) itself was good, and had updated kitchen and baths. You wont walk in the place and be blown away, but you will recognize that it will serve your vacationing needs just fine. The beds were hard, and can be tough on side sleepers (like myself). It's beachfront, with a closed in balcony (it has windows with screens that you can open), and we could see lots of dolphins in the early morning.

Surprised no one has posted on this place in Baltimore. Late last year, they opened up The Abbey Burger Bistro on Cross St. in Federal Hill. They use local Roseda farm beef for their burgers and they also make their own chips. While you can decide on your own toppings, they also have some unique burger offerings. The Harry's Bistro burger has bacon, cheddar, and fried egg served with an English Muffin. Messy but good. They also have a peanut butter burger with bacon- surprisingly delicious. I've also tried their Hudsdon Valley foie gras burger. They also serve homemade ice cream which is excellent. I once had their Berger Cookie shake- made with vanilla ice cream and spiked with Vanilla Stoli and Godiva Liqueur. While service on busy nights (weekends) is pretty slow because the bartenders are the waiters, it's worth checking out if you're in the area. pics 1041 Marshall Street Baltimore, MD 21230 443-453-9698 -
I used to love the subs and shakes from Tubby's, but the last time I was in Ocean City was in 1997 (crap that was 9 years ago), so they could suck these days. -
Captain's Table is the best seafood restaurant in Ocean City. It's on the third floor of the Courtyard Marriott at 15th and Boardwalk. I am NOT talking about Captain's Galley in West Ocean City. Crab guacamole is a GREAT dish; also the best red crab soup I have ever had. I thought enough of the last to return the next morning (two weeks ago) and buy two quarts of it, stopping at a Seven Eleven to buy a cooler and ice. More than a half dozen other first and second courses were excellent to outstanding. I write this as someone who has eaten almost everywhere in Ocean City from the Sunset Grill to the old Marlin Moon I should also note that the family who owns the Captain's Table has had a restaurant in Ocean City since the late 19th Century. No, not an exaggeration: they have photographs and newspaper and magazine articles on one of their walls confirming this. The negative about Captain's Table is the inability to see the ocean from the room which essentially feels like the old Corduroy which for some will be a negative. The room also has a different ambience after the sun sets. Still, this is a GREAT Maryland seafood restaurant and worthy of all the publicity it can receive. -
Some people go to Vegas, some go to Times Square. We went to Ocean City.with a side trip to join 3,000 others in the Victorian town of Berlin: go cups, carriage rides and a rock and roll band on stage with antique shops nearby. Before sunset we walked the Boardwalk, stopped by Crown Candy Kitchen and opened a serious bottle on our balcony with ocean air wafting in the distance. At 6:30 we joined 200 others in Ocean City's best seafood restaurant, Captain's Table, and spent the next three hours pouring, toasting and anticipating the New year. A bit later we ended up strolling down the Boardwalk, noting fireworks on one side of the Atlantic and waves on the other. Meanwhile in Berlin several thousand were raising glasses and pressing palms as 2014 approached and a few horses neighed with their own opinions for the visitors they entertained. An incredible introduction to 2014. With all due respect to Times Square and Las Vegas Boulevard the Boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland has an opinion on New Year's Eve. Berlin, Maryland, too. We will be back next year. And every year after. And, one of these years, somebody will write about Ocean City and Berlin and a few thousand more people will share in this wondrous introduction to the Next Year.

12 members of my family are coming to town for my son's graduation from Salisbury this May, and we have rented a condo in OC for the weekend. I'm looking for someplace to go for a family dinner on Saturday evening with good, reasonably priced food that will appeal to ages 20-60. American, seafood, steak, Mexican....any genre other than crabs could work. Unfortunately, graduation weekend also coincides with the Cruiser weekend in OC with all of the old souped up cars - so getting reservations now is paramount! ANy suggestions will be gladly taken! You speak the truth, Al. But I did manage to find a burger for lunch today that was better than it needed to be. Dizzied by the wide swaths of Hardees and Popeyes and othersuch, I for no real reason decided to have lunch at Peakey's. Semi-connected to a hotel on route 13 in Princess Anne, Peakey's worn dark wood and old local men at the bar reminded me of my Midwest roots. They have a lot of homey crab and clam dishes on offer, but timidly, I stuck with a prov-bacon burger. The fries were crap, but the burger, ordered and served medium, was thick, juicy, and tasty, and I ended up eating a lot more of it than I meant to. I ate in the bar, but they had a proper dining room that I noticed was offering a wine dinner this weekend. The waitress was actually pretty darn good, and I got three tea refills without ever asking. This place is not worth traveling out of your way for, but if you're in the area and want a comfortable meal, it far outpaces the rest of the chain joints around.
