  1. Josh's post about La Cuchara in Houston reminds me that Houston's La Cuchara (which means "The Spoon") has nothing whatsoever to do with La Cuchara in Woodberry, a Basque-inspired restaurant run by brothers Ben and Jake Lefenfeld. However, Baltimore residents will be pleased to know that the Lefenfelds will be opening a second, seafood-based restaurant in South Baltimore - Minnow, located in the 2 East Wells Apartment Building: "Restaurateurs behind La Cuchara Opening Seafood Restaurant in South Baltimore" by Sarah Meehan on baltimoresun.com According to Sarah Meehan, Minnow is hoping for a May, 2017 opening, will seat around 130 guests, and will have a Mediterranean-based wine list to match their seafood, which will include high-quality, simple, grilled fish.
  2. la bergerie i hear has a new chef and new owner as of about a year ago. the locals i know still enjoy it as they do le refuge which is really very good and very cramped. le gaulois is not a favorite of mine. jean claude at le refuge is an excellent chef and it is fun there when someone has a birthday and they play the old edith piaf tape singing happy birthday! now the citty council has allowed cafe seating on the sidewalks which has made it more delightful to dine in old town. there is a current controversy brewing regarding clients bringing their doggies to relax at the outdoor cafes. welcome to the peoples republic of old town.
  3. Looks to be in the early stages, but Sebastian Zutant is stepping back from The Red Hen and All Purpose (but will remain a partner) to focus on opening a wine bar with his wife, Lauren Winter, and expand his wine making business. He is hoping to release his first production in 2017 (250 cases made in 2015 and 350 cases made in 2016). City Paper with the story
  4. I wanted to start the thread here for a new spot coming to downtown Takoma Park. Seth Cook and Chris Brown, two coffee veterans who have been at Northside Social for years, are branching out on their own. They have a great location on Laurel Avenue, and construction is about to begin. TKBC (@takomabevco) will offer coffee, beer(draft) and wine as well as a great cocktail program. The menu will be designed by a chef you will all recognize. I love this team and this concept, and that is why I decided to back them financially and advise on the project. Keep your eyes out as the project progresses.
  5. Drove by earlier tonight and new sign on the window. Couldn't find anything on the internet. Any word on this new place?
  6. Breaking News! Bethesda Magazine is reporting that Peter Chang will open a new "flagship" restaurant called "Q by Peter Chang" in Bethesda. Don will have to decide if this qualifies for it's own thread.
  7. DC City Smokehouse folks are opening Wicked Bloom Social Club nearby at 1540 North Capitol St, NW, DC, on Friday, Sept. 25, 2015. Washington City Paper also says:
  8. This weekend, friends of mine took me to eat at Satay Sarinah in Alexandria in the Van Dorn Station. It was Indonesian food. I'm no expert, as I always think Malaysian and Indonesian are similar, but I did enjoy the food. We started with a variety of satays- lamb, beef and chicken- nice and smokey. I ordered the Spicy Rujak salad, it was cabbage, sprouts and carrots with the spicy peanut sauce, covered with shrimp chips- good, not the best i've had though. For entree, I had the Rengdang Daging- beef slow cooked in a gingery stew- also very delicious. I like the side of curried pickles. I also sampled my eating companions' lamb shank which was very tasty. I think for the price (8-12 dollars), this place was pretty good.
  9. Tom Brown is opening a new place. According to the article, it will be adult cocktails, no food, but complimentary bar snacks like nuts. ETA September or October.
  10. The Waterfront Market & Cafe held their press preview last week and friends and family grand opening on Sunday. The official public opening date has been announced as next Tuesday, November 26. Based on photos from the various events, the space looks great and it should be a very nice addition to the quite limited options located directly on the water. There's definitely a push to draw locals in with the "back to your waterfront" tag line. The menu will include custom sandwiches, salads, prepared gourmet items, beer and wine to go (or drink there), fresh sushi, pastries, etc., with similar items available for purchase at the retail market. More specifics here, via LocalKicks. Jody Manor, the owner of Bittersweet Cafe and Catering (in business since 1983), knows a thing or two about creating a sustainable, successful business, so here's wishing him a long run in this latest venture. I'm looking forward to checking it out soon after it opens!
  11. Bourbon Coffee has decent beans. However, my friend ordered a Horchata and was immensely disappointed. But I would go there before illy, which I understand uses vacuum-packed beans.
  12. I visited Jesus' taco truck for the first time a couple days ago, and I have to say it's really good. Really really good. It reminds me a lot of the tacos I've had in Mexico which is honestly the highest praise I can give. I've tried the pastor (spicy pork), chorizo and asado (grilled beef) so far. The best is the pastor. Oh have I missed pastor tacos. Other fillings are tongue, and chicken. Have not tried those yet. I also see Res (beef) on there, I'll have to ask about that. By the way, no other options. No veggie, no fish. Its pretty cheap, $2 per (cash only), and they are open every day 11am-8pm. Win all around.
  13. Bonchon Chicken, a Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise, is coming to Philadelphia. I suspect Philadelphians will immediately fall in love with the eternally crispy skin, and that the novelty will wear thin after enough time goes by. The quality of some of the Bonchon franchises has slipped here in the the Washington, DC area (here's the Washington, DC thread if you want to get some historical background). Nevertheless, it really is unlike anything you've ever tried before - they double-fry it in a super wok (I think), and the chicken stays hot and crispy for over thirty minutes (actually it stays crispy for much longer than that). You can get a double-mix of drummies and wings, and soy-garlic and hot chili sauce - I've always found the wings with soy-garlic to be the best combination - the drumsticks (the actual chicken) have really changed in quality and size (they are now nuclear-sized) over the past couple of years. "Update on BonChon Korean Fried Chicken" by Arthur Etchells on phillymag.com This will have multiple locations in Philadelphia before you know it. "Bonchon" means "my hometown," by the way.
  14. Since this is a new name and location (regardless of whether or not it has new owners), SakoonThai will have its own thread (click on the snap-back button to reach the old, Sakoontra thread).
  15. I'm not sure whether La Fondita has changed ownership, or simply gotten a makeover along with its new rotisserie. Much of what's inside Chicken Loco looks very similar to the way it did at La Fondita, with Latinos chowing down on hearty soups with hunks of corn thrown into the bowl, and Central and South American specialties sitting in trays behind the counter. What's new, aside from the name change, is that as of yesterday, they're serving Pollo a la Brasa, and a Half Chicken ($5.20 without sides) was a pretty game effort for the second day of operation. The cumin-y rub had a decent flavor, but they'll ultimately need to adjust the temperature of their oven, and get the penetration of spicing down more into the core of breast meat - easier said than done. The white mayonnaise-based sauce is, as it so often is, lame, and the green sauce was a standard spicy-grainy version. Either way, I think the decrepit Chicken Pollo down the street is in for some tougher competition from Chicken Loco than from either of the (superior) Korean-based chicken houses, Bon Chon Chicken or Chicken Village, all four sitting on Little River Turnpike between the Beltway and I-395. Mama's Pollo, a fifth, sits right next to TemptAsian Cafe, but is probably too far down the road to make much difference. Cheers, Rocks.
  16. "Restaurant With Questionable Spanish Name Opening On Glebe Road" by Ethan Rothstein on wtop.com
  17. Should be some kind of comment from someone about Flint Hill, VA and the great restaurant that was once there.
  18. "CaliBurger To Locate HQ In D.C., Plans U.S. Expansion" by Rebecca Cooper on wtop.com In 2012 In-n-Out objected that it's "red and yellow logo and burger style copied its longtime West Coast staples." Has anyone eaten at a CaliBurger overseas who has also eaten at an In-n-Out to compare? Apparently their first U. S. outpost will either be here or in California. Remembering that In-n-Out stopped a Utah clone a few years ago I wonder how far this will go if they are really that similar.
  19. There are dozens of Yo! Sushis in the United Kingdom, but Union Station is their opening foray into the United States. It's in the West Hall (hard to find unless you're looking for it) along with Chop't, Potbelly, Roti, Chipotle, and maybe a couple other "better than terrible" fast food operations. Yo! Sushi is fun, extremely friendly, and murderously efficient. I just sat there and marveled at how every possible thing had been addressed in making eating here an exercise in ergonomics (yes, I know, ergonomics relates to workplace conditions, but think about who the author of this post is). You have to experience the efficiency to fathom it - it has everything from personal, underground ginger and wasabi containers to an orange iHelp button. I'm surprised the soy sauce didn't pour itself. The sushi is what you'd expect, and my only advice would be to show a bias toward the looser rolls - the ones that have been bambooed are just too compressed for my palate. If you have a train to catch, get here an hour early, assume you'll be filling up on a lot of rice, and you can enjoy a pleasant, reasonably healthful, moderately sized meal for about $20 (and of course, they have grab-n-go sushi as well). 20. Lore Croghan of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reports that Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group will be responsible for overseeing the lobby cafe of TFANA (Theatre For A New Audience), Downtown Brooklyn's new Shakespeare theatre.
