  1. I wanted to like this place. At least, I love southeast Asian street food. But when I saw the menu I knew it wasn’t going to be great. A mishmash of Korean, Singaporean, Japanese Chinese etc. No rendang as feared, everything was a dumbed-down version. Papaya salad with no kick, terrible (inedible) Szechuan wontons...skewers were fine, as were summer rolls. But, as feared, if you want good Asian food you still need to pay top dollar at Q, or head on up to Rockville...
  2. Rock-n-Roll Sushi is at least better than the flyer Nooshi mailed out last year advertising "Funky Sushi" at happy hour. Funky sushi. EWWWWWWWW.
  3. They've been open for about 10 days, according to a sign in the parking garage. Someone who works in another business in the building told me that the owner originally wanted to call the restaurant "Black Pearl," but there were issues with using that name. I was hoping it would be a good alternative for lunch as I work nearby, but the menu seems a little too steep for my budget.
  4. Now that the Washington Post has done a full profile on Mr. Bruner-Yang and most media outlets have already broken this news, makes sense to start a thread here. This is yet another really ambitious concept for the area with $300K of the startup money crowdsourced, a chef from Lyon Hall and plans for it to include a full retail mix of apparel, a donut shop, specialty coffee and Range-like stations simulating Asian markets/hawkers with all day/all meal coverage . Great to see and wish it well. If it works, this is big time for DC. Really fantastic the amazing amount of food-related development activity for a city that's relatively small.   5. I figured we need a topic for the rather interesting The Block in Annandale (Here's their Yelp since their "main" page is the Instagram account, as it is for most of these places.) Currently at The Block are: Snocream Company (Yelp) Pokeworks (Yelp) Balo Kitchen (Yelp) (Facebook) (might be out of soft opening) Roots Thai (Facebook) (I think is still in soft open) Block Bar Munch (ice cream topped donuts, not open yet) So far, I've tried the first three. Snocream is a veteran of Annandale with their shaved-ice-cream concoction (good!). Pokeworks is poke bowls and the one I've tried was good. I've tried Balo Kitchen and I'll say the Street Bread with sausage was yummy, and most of their menu looked intriguing. I'll probably go try Roots Thai soon. (As I don't drink, I can't attest to the Bar.) Now, every time I've gone here I'm fairly certain I might have been the oldest person there. And as it is a big concrete box with hard tables, it does get to "get off my lawn" levels of noise for me, but, well, I'm not the target audience. Anyone else out there have experiences to share? If so, we might want to break these up into separate threads.
  6. Pardon the late notice but I spotted this forthcoming Asian food hall a few weeks back. Streat Side is claiming three slots (6343-6347) in the Center Ridge strip mall, setting up shop between the pending Coast Guard Exchange store and chain eatery Choong Man Chicken. The owners haven't responded to emails about their plans for the new venture, but their web page promises a 4,000-square foot space that sounds a lot like Annandale's Block: 6 food stalls, a dedicated bar, and a "lively and cozy space." I've heard construction crews working their magic inside but can't tell if this newbie is going to pop before the new year. There's no shortage of Korean, Thai, or Chinese-American take-out in the area. But nothing wrong with welcoming a worthwhile mash-up such as Balo Kitchen to the area.
  7. I went to Spices last night for the second time and it was just as loud as the first time. They could definitely use some acoustic tiles or something to dampen the noise. My wife could only hear me across the table when I shouted. As to the food, after our first visit where we found the food to be lackluster we didn't plan on returning despite it being reasonably priced (most entrees $9-12) and so convenient. However, our second visit was the result of the closing of Spices's upscale sister a few doors down. I had heard and its true that some of Yanyu's best dishes are available now at Spices. I wanted to let you all know that the Big Duck (peking-style) is available and just as good at Spices. I got the half-duck ($15, whole duck is $30) which is presented to each diner before it is carved. The staff even goes to the trouble of making all of the pancakes for you with scallions and cucumber as well as the meat. It is downright delicious and wonderful meal for one (1/2 duck= 5 pancakes). The Big Duck and the other Yanyu holdovers are listed as Jessie Yan's specialties on a separate menu on each table. Other items are two different sea basses, a crab wonton, garlic shrimp (which sounded great), and one or two others I can't remember. So despite the noise, I'd recommend Spices - if only for the specials menu. What are others thoughts on Spices? Specials menu and regular menu?

I've also eaten lunch at Kumo Asian Bistro, across the street, w/ the same friend (who is NOT an adventurous diner)- she had a Chinese dish, I had Thai basil chicken (not terrible, not outstanding), & a couple of rolls (Tokyo & eel avocado, if I remember correctly). It's an attractive place, service was just fine, but there are so many alternatives in the Springfield area (Thai Gang Waan, Bangkok Noodle, Le Bledo, Delia's, Gamasot) & so many that I haven't tried yet (Sampan Cafe, Mediterranean Gourmet Market), I just want to keep trying new places...
  9. In today's Washington Post there is an article in the financial section on the Newseum which is under construction on Pennsylvania Avenue. Part of the article notes that an announcement is expected today for the inclusion of a "high end" Wolfgang Puck restaurant when the building opens later in '07. In Los Angeles his signatures restaurants are Chinois on Main in Santa Monica and Spago. Similar restaurants (but not as good) are found in Vegas and elsewhere while Postrio is in Seattle and San Francisco. Can Emeril's, Norman's and Roy's be far behind?
  10. Cathal Armstrong's new restaurant Kaliwa is opening possibly tomorrow at the Wharf (751 Wharf St, SW, DC) (via Laura Hayes' tweet).   11. Just wanted to bump this thread and let people know that Himitsu had its official opening last night. I was lucky enough to attend a preview dinner on Wednesday; raw fish preps and the entire beverage program are absolutely going to be highlights. Not really fair to "review" or critique, as they weren't even really open yet, but multiple plates are priced substantially lower than they should be. Happy to post photos of the menus and / or food if helpful. A super talented young duo, and one that should do quite well in the space. Cheers!
  12. Kliman breaks the story that the ground floor of what I always thought was an unobtrusively handsome building will become the site of K&K's next adventure,"inspired by the cuisines of SE Asia." "Southeast Asia" is a pretty broad swath of territory, and the phrase bringing "modern techniques & execution to these traditional dishes," is pretty unhelpful, so I hungrily await further details. As I recall, Karoum once cheffed at Asia Nora -- whether this is relevant, I have no idea (and I never liked that place, anyway). But this sounds more noodle-y. Adam at the bar is always a good sign.
  13. I swear I made a previous thread for Catch on the Ave, but I can't find it. We have gone twice now- once with BIL and SIL, and once with my Mom. I can't remember what we all had the first time we went, but we liked it enough to go back! I remember they had good cocktails. On the last visit, Hubby had fish tacos. They had soft shells, and I asked if I could have them on a sandwich. They had run a special earlier that week with a pimento cheese/ softshell sandwich, so I go that. This would have been better with less pimento cheese, to be honest, I love soft shells and should have protested more and seen if I could have just gotten a more plain sandwich. I expect this sandwich was because a lot of people find soft shells a little more creepy than I do. It was fine, it was just perhaps a little over-decadent and you lost the crab flavor. Mom had the lobster salad which she said was really good. This is a nice little neighborhood spot with above average food for Del Ray. We like the ability to get something a little fancier or a little more causal for dinner, and they have a nice beverage list, and you can generally get in.
  14. FYI-- This came in my in-box today: I had an excellent RW lunch meal there a few weeks ago. The calamari salad was perfectly cooked and tender, and it had a kick to it. I had the kobe beef entree which was phenomenal-- it wasn't quite medium rare (though, I don't know if kobe beef is supposed to be cooked like steak?), but the saucing made up for it. I might have held up the table a bit by cleaning my plate. Dessert-- I don't remember now, but no one at the table was too inspired by any of the choices. Service-- a bit slow, but reasonable given that it was RW. Server was nice and competent.

  18. Looks like a new restaurant is taking over the 21st and P corner that was formerly Cafe Trope. Its called Scion. Was walking by today and a "Now hiring" sign is in the window. Anyone have any info?
  19. Definitely hipster Asian joint (in the vein of Momofoku or Toki Underground). I had their steamed pork dumplings and pork bao. Their bao were just like Momfoku in that steamed bun with a taco type presentation vs traditional enclosed bao. Quality was decent.   20. Years ago, I enjoyed several meals at Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant in Vienna. I thought many times about returning, but for whatever reason, I just never seemed to get there. Then about a month ago, I returned. Then I went again. And again. And yesterday I found myself in my car, having just ordered a Curry Paradise lunch entrée for $5.95. In the parking lot at the back of the restaurant, enjoying a quiet meal by myself, I took two bites of the dish, and then I started laughing. I started laughing because the food was so unbelievably good, the latest in an unbroken string of terrific plates at Sunflower. From dish-to-dish, from day-to-day, this place is consistently good - one of the few restaurants in the entire area where you can seemingly throw a dart at the menu and hit a winner. Golden Nuggets are marinated yuba wrapped with shredded shiitake mushrooms, soy protein and bamboo shoots in a druggingly delicious house brown sauce. If you serve this dish to a child, or even an adult, they’ll have no idea they aren’t eating meat. Forget the health/vegetarian angle: this place is great! And even if you’re a college football player, you can walk away from a meal here stuffed to the gills, entirely satisfied, and still somehow managing to feel healthy and not weighed down. White And Green Jade is layers of steamed spinach with “very precious” bamboo fungus, Chinese jujube, Chinese wolfberry, fresh enoki mushrooms and sweet corn in a light ginger sauce. If some of these terms are unfamiliar, their menu has an entertaining and informative glossary in the back which is a perfect way to pass the time while waiting for your food to arrive. Staffed mainly with Asian-Americans, it still manages to have a funky, flower-child feel to it. They don’t serve alcohol, but offer up an interesting selection of juices and teas. The only thing to avoid are the desserts, which are simply not good because they use no eggs, dairy or sugar. If I lived closer to Sunflower, I’d get carryout lunches several days a week, and if I was forced at gunpoint to pick just one restaurant in the Washington DC area where I had to eat every meal for the rest of my life, I would choose Well, I guess I would choose Citronelle. But Sunflower would at least get a thought. This food is perfect for carrying out and reheating in the microwave, and will easily stay fresh in the fridge for a second night because of the airtight containers and vegetarian purity. As they say on the menu, “Everything is free of MSG, and only organic flavor enhancers, such as kelp powder, kombu, sea salt, canola oil, nutritional yeast, gomashio, barley malt, brown rice syrup, and vegetable stock are used.” Sunflower is only one exit outside the beltway (take I-66 to Nutley Street, take a left on Route 123, and it will be almost immediately on your left) and is only a twenty-minute drive from the DC line without traffic.   21. It looks like another new spot is in the works on Columbia Pike - Mongol Nomads Asian Fusion. It's located in between the psychic and City Kabob Curry House. I couldn't find anything online about them yet.
