  1. Just across from the Rockville metro station sits this little hole in the wall. I've now had a few lunches here and can give it a hearty thumbs up for real Mexican in the MoCo burbs. The open kitchen highlights a grill and rotisserie sitting over a well stoked wood fire. You're choices are well and wisely limited to tacos, burritos, quesadillas and soup. Beef or Chicken. Throw in the rotisserie chicken and that's about it. Add the typical sides in humungous portion and away you go. Have a juice that tastes like it may actually have seen the fruit it used to belong to in the last couple of days. And be sure to grab some of the toxic orange house-made hot sauce from the little island buffet. Not elegant or sublime, just good. <burp>
  2. Just as an FYI the brothers who were the original GM and cook at Fast Gourmet, Manu and Nacho, have not been affiliated with the spot for a while. They have split from their partners at FG and are now solely at the new place on 19th and M NW, called TakEatEasy. Unfortunate name aside, the sandwiches that everyone raved about for a while (then wondered why they dropped off in quality/consistency a few months later when the brothers left) are now located there. TakEatEasy opens today with a work in progress menu of salads and sandwiches at lunch, moving into tapas and drinks at happy hour, and then some larger plates at dinner. It's definitely a work in progress at the moment but if you remember how good Fast Gourmet was at the start, you'll have this on your radar immediately. EDIT: I should have mentioned they also have a liquor license. Chivito + beer.
  3. I'm surprised that there's still no thread on Tico so I'm starting one. I've been there a bunch of times, and it's one of my favorites. Each time I've ordered a fried dish, I've been impressed by how well it's fried. The dishes have been crispy and not greasy (fried calamari, fried manchego, fried oysters). I've also really liked their mac & cheese with ham, duck tacos, salmon ceviche with almonds, and chorizo risotto. The few dishes that I did not care for were their fried chicken taco and black risotto croquettes - both tasted bland to me.
  4. This little restaurant in a wasteland of a strip mall opened a little over a year ago. The family who owns/runs it lives in Burke. It is not a destination restaurant, but a lovely and so far reliable neighborhood joint, serving really good-tasting Salvadoran and Mexican food. Their salsa is cooked and smokey (chipotle peppers?) and my favorite in the area. I also love their refried beans, which are pretty thoroughly pureed, but with a good flavor. The fried yucca is crisp and not greasy (almost as good as my favorite at La Caraquena), and fried plantains have been tasty as well. Jacob's Platter is a grilled ribeye steak covered with sliced mushrooms sauteed in butter, sauteed fresh veggies, rice and black beans on the side. Steak tacos overflow with grilled skirt steak, served with refried beans, rice, fresh salsa, guacamole and sour cream that you add to your own taste. I also love their enchiladas, which are a great deal at lunch: Two for $8.95. The menu was just enlarged, and I look forward to many more visits to try more dishes. So far, I have not had any problems with gluten. They do serve some dishes with soft flour tortillas, so I avoid those if corn tortillas can't be substituted.
  5. A Bolivan bakery has opened up in my 'hood, replacing the sketchy Asian bakery next to the new Wild Chicken, and got a nice writeup in the WaPo here. The info: 3900 Pickett Rd. Fairfax, VA 22031 703-978-8021 Tues-Sat:10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sun: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Has anyone gone yet? Can't wait to try it out, especially the saltenas!
  6. Who doesn't want to eat at a restaurant where "food is sacred" (the chef's words, not mine)? Y'all are gonna LOVE the web site. Its music doesn't appear to have an off switch.
  7. Teo's Bakery (which served some pretty decent Bolivian snack food) has closed. I noticed the dreaded "brown paper" over the windows a few weeks ago. I often saw workers there, sitting in the parking lot and having their lunch - Teo's filled a need, and it's too bad it's gone (it was in the same tiny little strip shopping center as Sweet Rice).
  8. In my absence, the family did a takeout chicken from LCP last week. There were no leftovers for me to try, so I can't give a firsthand account; however, they rated it "delicious" and comparable to other Peruvian chicken establishments in the area.
  9. I hadn't been to Costa Verde in several years (it was "that place" by Jiffy Lube), but always enjoyed my meals there; unfortunately, it has closed. Replacing it is Darna, a Middle Eastern restaurant and hookah lounge.
  10. Did you know that if you type "site:donrockwell.com goya" into Google you get six pages of results mentioning the brand but no thread devoted to it? For reasons unclear even to me, that is about to change.

Lizzy was craving pho today (she's not a pescetarian anymore), so we went to 5-10 Foodmart, she got a large chicken pho, & I got a baleada (tortilla w/ egg, peppers, beans, avocado-added extra salsa at home). The pho was packed separately-broth, noodles, herbs, onions, peppers, & she is so happy, says it's delicious. My baleada was good, too, maybe more of a breakfast meal, but filling. I'm happy that we have so many choices for takeout food close by, that's one of my favorite things about living in this area. We spent $13+, so it was very inexpensive as well (& I'm not cooking tonight).
  12. I came across Coppelia because I was looking for a spot that's open for breakfast at 7am on a Sunday. Coppelia is open 24 hours. (I wasn't in the mood for a 24 hour Korean place.) It calls itself a "latin diner." I started out as the only customer, and the server was friendly. I had the huevos rancheros, a side of tostones, strawberry juice, and a cortaditos (espresso/foamed milk - came unsweetened). The huevos rancheros were 2 eggs (arrived with broken yolks), creme fraiche type cream, and tomatillo salsa on a crispy tortilla with beans and rice underneath. (Picture below.) I enjoyed the eggs, especially paired in a bite with the crispy tortilla. There was some salsa on the eggs, but more salsa would have been great. I enjoyed the beans and rice - good flavor, not salty. I also liked the tostones - crispy, hot, not too greasy. The strawberry juice was a bit too sweet and thick for me. I'm not sure if Coppelia will be on my regular NY rotation, but it's definitely someplace I'll go back to when I'm looking for an early morning breakfast. And it has wifi, no password needed.
  13. Please transform this topic into a post elsewhere if there is an established general thread about new places and transformations. However, last night I noticed copies of an application for a liquor license posted in the window of the McDonald's that closed some time ago, i.e. across from the Uptown, down a bit from an Italian restaurant on the corner whose logo is a winged lion. Does anyone know what's up at this location?
  14. A friend suggested we drop in to Pollo Mex last night, and I was dubious because it sounded like yet another latin american chicken place. Well, they do have rotisserie chicken, but that barely scratches the surface. Arriving about 8PM on a Wednesday, the place clearly does a lot of carryout business, and about 3/4 of the twelve or so tables were occupied. Three guests were also seated at the (full) bar, eating and clearly enjoying a pitcher of sangria. Noise level was low to medium. Service was prompt and friendly, we started with a half-pitcher of margaritas that lasted the two of us through the meal, accompanied by nice light chips and a clearly homemade salsa with nice chunks of tasty fresh tomatos . We split a ceviche appetizer, and were blown away with its good sized chunks of firm flounder mixed with romaine, tomatoes, onion and cilantro...somehow there was something special in the dressing, and we pondered for a while before realizing it was a touch of ginger. This is a generous, outstanding dish that could be a light meal for one. I had a grilled steak, looked like thick flank but I dunno, flavorful and moist, with tostones and yucca, I preferred the oh so mildly sweet yucca to the drier tostones. My companion had a wonderful dish of pork with onions, fried plantains , beans and rice. That was it for us, no dessert. Overall, great service, great food, and an interesting and broad menu with something for everyone. Next time, I want to try the tortas, havent had a good one since I left California and I have a feeling Pollo Mex will deliver. http://www.pollomex.com/ (the online menu does not reflect the full menu in house).
