Forgive my exuberance, but I went to Clemson for both undergraduate and graduate school, and after being there during the glorious 1981-1982 National Championship season, it has been 34 years of non-stop heartache. They've been good, and at times excellent, but they've never come close to repeating that one, unforgettable accomplishment. --- "Clemson Tigers Banned from Social Media during Season" on si.com Supposedly, "to keep players' focus on football as opposed to the outside world." I read it more as, "to keep any stars from getting trashed at 2 AM and tweeting something stupid." Can you imagine completely giving up social media for four months in this day and age when you're in college? This is the 21st-century version of saltpeter. -

Since I was a young girl, "Roman Holiday" has been one of my favorite films. It won three Academy Awards: best actress, costume design and screenwriting. I watched it again, and I still love it. It isn't the most complicated story. There aren't any special effects. But the chemistry between Peck and Hepburn is compelling, and the shots of Rome are delightful. The thing that makes this film a classic--the standard by which romantic comedies are judged, and often found lacking--is Audrey Hepburn.- 3 replies

Wake Forest is an underrated football team in this 2017 season, with a record of 4-1, having lost only to Florida State last weekend, 26-19. One thing that most people don't realize is that, after five games, they *lead the nation* in "Tackles for Loss" with 50 - that's 10 per game.

Congratulations to the Marion Wildcats for winning their homecoming game this evening against Centralia, 49-46, scoring a touchdown with 18 seconds left in the game: The winning play is here (this is a 7MB file). I suspect Centralia had a *long* drive up I-57 heading home. The best-known athlete from Marion is Ray Fosse, the MLB all-star catcher whom Pete Rose took out with this play: Needless to say, the denizens of Marion, IL were delighted to host Rose in the Marion Penitentiary for five months for tax evasion.

You have two choices when watching "The Wild One": 1) Watch it through the eyes of older people who lived through The Great Depression and World War II, and were genuinely afraid of seeing society unravel and go to hell in a handbasket, or 2) roll your eyes, and scream aloud, about fifty times, "My *God* this is dated!" "The Wild One" is so dated that it comes across as a parody of itself. The acting is so overwrought, and the dialogue is so corny that it comes across as being about as rebellious as "Rock Around the Clock." One of the leaders of the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club is Jerry Paris, who played the dentist in "The Dick Van Dyke Show" - I'm sorry, but seeing Rob Petrie's next-door neighbor Jerry Helper in a black leather jacket is just not that frightening. Clocking in at just under an hour and twenty minutes, "The Wild One" seems interminable. You have to acknowledge its influence as the first-ever biker flick, and for Marlon Brando influencing both Elvis Presley and James Dean (and hence, the rebellious 1960s). This film is, at once: terrible, important, influential, dated, forward-looking, inane, and ridiculous. Marlon Brando's stunt-double was *so obvious* that it was, at times, laughable, as he didn't look anything like Brando, and the transitions between Brando and his stunt-double were very poorly done, and not edited well at all. If you want to watch a movie for a good time, take a pass on "The Wild One"; if you want to be a good film scholar and watch a historically important movie, then go for it. That's about the best I can do for you - I felt like I was watching an episode of "Route 66," and not a particularly good one, either. --- But there is this legendary quote: Kathie Bleeker: "What're you rebelling against, Johnny?" Johnny Strabler: "Whaddya got?" --- The Hollister Riot, the staged picture of which - in Life Magazine - influenced the whole biker genre.

The ACC has changed so much from when I was a child (and you could simply "go down Tobacco Road") that I thought I'd write this little primer, mainly for myself to remember things, but also for others. In late 2012, Louisville agreed to replace Maryland, bringing the conference up to 15 teams as of Jul 1, 2014. It's because of my childhood love of Maryland sports that I'll always get a warm, fuzzy feeling when I hear "ACC" mentioned, even though it's nothing like the ACC of my childhood. That said, all schools that were in the Conference 40 years ago remain *except* for Maryland, so the Conference has grown more than it has changed. (South Carolina, the other "former" ACC member, was an original Conference member, but left in 1971.) Here then, are the two Divisions (Divisional play began in 2005), with the teams in each Division alongside the date they joined the Conference. It seems like, for convenience of travel - think of all the minor sports that need to travel - they'd put geographically proximal schools in the same Division, but that's not the way it is: Atlantic Division 1953 Clemson North Carolina State Wake Forest University 1991 Florida State University 2005 Boston College 2013 Syracuse University University of Notre Dame 2014 University of Louisville Coastal Division 1953 Duke University University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of Virginia 1979 Georgia Institute of Technology 2004 University of Miami Virginia Tech 2013 University of Pittsburgh

After reading rave reviews from critics and seeing "Shane" listed as one of the best films ever made, I decided to watch it, with high expectations. I was disappointed. It seemed corny and dated, and several of the actors seemed miscast to me. Am I missing something? I realize it was filmed in 1953, and a lot of Westerns that have come along since may have been inspired by it, but I recently saw "Stagecoach," filmed 14 years earlier, and I think it is a much better film.
