  1. DH indulged me, so we headed over to Little Beast for opening night. I’ve been consistently underwhelmed by the restaurants in Chevy Chase, but as a Bakers & Baristas fan (and eternal optimist), I had high hopes this time. AND THEY WERE MET (maybe even exceeded)! Pizza was Neopolitan style but with a slightly thinner crust than I’m accustomed to. Lots of char and no sogginess. We played it safe (pepperoni), so it’ll take some experimentation before I can compare it with my faves. But I can confidently say it’s the best pizza we’ve ever had in walking distance of home (Friendship Heights for the past 20-odd years). Thinner crust turned out to be a plus (no leftovers). We also had a lamb ragu, which was the highlight of the meal, and roasted broccoli with lemon and garlic. Reasonable prices and portions. Nothing was revelatory but everything was very tasty. The space was clean but not sterile (we ate inside — outside looked more popular). Lighting might benefit from some tweaking (bulbs in recessed canisters were too blue — bugged DH more than me — I was facing the incandescent fixtures). Service was friendly, attentive, and thoughtful. Basically, Little Beast looks like it has the makings of a perfect neighborhood restaurant. A comfortable hassle-free place with food at least as good as I could make myself. And a place that’s welcoming to all ages and can handle parties of different sizes. It’ll be a couple of weeks before the cafe hours/menu kick in and I’m eager to check that out as well. Pastries look more interesting than Little Red Fox’s. I think the all-ages thing may be trickier to pull off in a cafe.
  2. Stopped by Red Light during their soft opening (I think the official open is the 27th?); a friend wanted to meet up for dessert for her birthday. Can give give an unabashed Yes! to the beer-based doughnuts and chocolate on the menu; there is enough chocolate to go around for all of the doughnuts, with a bit left over to lick off your fingers... or smear on the slightly-too-sweet marshmallows that came with the mexican chocolate tart. (there, i fixed it.) Also tasty, a goat cheese tart with sorbet. Inside it's all dark grey and moody; I'm pretty in love with the lamps in this place. Will be interesting to see how they handle the load once the patio opens "”I suspect its going to get crazy. But those doughnuts! I'm going to have to go back and get more doughnuts.
  3. The Washingtonian has a blog post about the new Cool Disco Donuts that's having a soft opening this Friday and grand opening next Friday in the old Tangysweet space on P Street. Owner is Aaron Gordon of Tangysweet. The picture on the blog post is ultra cheesy, and the doughnut trend is already verging on trite even though all these doughnut places haven't opened yet, but the name Cool Disco Donuts made me laugh (thinking of seeing the Cool "Disco" Dan graffiti and some personal memories of times when I was in DC when the graffiti was around.)
  4. Continuing my quest to eat at, and write about, every new restaurant in DC, I recently visited Drafting Table, named after the desks architects use to sketch designs on. I liked Drafting Table, but as a true architecture nerd, I wanted to love it. The decorations were all right: wood tables you could sketch on, swivel chairs, industrial lighting, and photos of famous architects. But Drafting Table clearly struggled with translating the concept into a menu that makes sense. Some of the options follow the theme, including the delicious Kaya Toast, an appetizer of toast sticks shaped like Lincoln Logs, with an eccentric but tasty mix of coconut jam, fried eggs, and soy broth. The Falafel and (huge) Mixed Pickle Platter were both good, but didn't fit particularly well with the rest of the menu, which includes mussels, a burger, an egg sandwich, brisket, and fish 'n' chips. Actually, you could pick any of those and say the same thing: they're interesting but not consistent with each other or Drafting Table's theme. Of course, consistency isn't everything. If the food was great, I could care less how the pieces fit together. But what I tried was only OK, which seems consistent with what Yelp and other reviewers have said. The Beer Braised Brisket was closer to beef stew than traditional brisket, and I think the dry version would have been better. The Draftsman Burger, with brisket, blue cheese, apricot chutney, and carmelized bacon & onion on top, sounded better than it was. It was a lot of stuff on an average burger. The fries were totally delicious but came with the scourge of every new restaurant, "house made ketchup," which tasted nothing like ketchup and was too sweet to cut the fries' salt. Heinz would have been cool with me. Drafting Table has some promise, but it's not nearly good enough yet. I hope they clean up the menu a bit and focus on what they do best, whatever that may be. Until then, we'll move on the next new thing.
