  1. Howdy folks: I'll be in Phoenix next week. Any DR.com favorites out there? (Am also perusing the eG forums on this topic but would appreciate any help) Many thanks
  2. In the midst of the NBA playoffs, the Warriors have beaten the Houston Rockets twice; once in which Stephen Curry played only 20 minutes, lit up the scoring, then got hurt and sat for the rest of the rout(game). In the 2nd match up, Curry didn't play due to injury...opening up tremendous opportunities for Houston. Didn't pan out though as the Golden State Warriors won again, even without Curry. Of course there could be a variety of reasons for the results...but one suggestion is that James Harden's defense is simply not that stellar. Below a video of some of his shining moments on defense: "Great Moments in James Harden Defensive History" on espn.go.com
  3. Uh.... yeah😀 But seriously that was an excellent game last evening. Two teams with many pro caliber big strong violent super fast skilled players. Their practices could be more competitive than many games. Seriously. Plays were decided by inches. Really great competition. To the victors go the spoils. Congrats Clemson.
  4. An interesting article analyzing the tremendous season the Milwaukee Bucks are having, currently and for much of the season, leading the NBA in wins and winning percentage attributes much of their success to the changes instituted by Coach Mike Budenholzer. Budenholzer had one or two excellent coaching seasons turning the Atlanta Hawks into a playoff contender with a great regular season record, wherein he altered their game. He was a long time assistant under Coach Pop at San Diego. He took over from Jason Kidd, and Kidd's replacement from last season. Hmmm. Must admit Jason Kidd was one of my favorite players to watch, was an all time star, had a dramatic impact on teams that pushed them to winning records, seemed to carry that throughout his career,, even into the doddering end of his career and was clearly a player who had "coach" written all over him. Alas his coaching tenure's have also come with problems and his results as a coach didn't mirror his results as a player. Budenholzer has done very well...and this Milwaukee team has changed its character and is playing at an excellent level with a variety of changes that reflect the coaching changes. 5. Carl Hubbell! I know his name well, and have never once seen a film clip of him - famous for his screwball. His 1933-1937 seasons were extraordinary (note also in that link the #1 pitcher in "Similarity" to Hubbell). I vaguely recall "hearing" (and I mean, I can still hear it in my mind) in a documentary, an extremely gravelly voiced, older man saying "Carl Hubbell" when talking about the best pitchers ever - was that Red Barber in the Burns video? From Wikipedia, it says he set the major league record for consecutive wins with 24, and reminds us that he struck out Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons, and Cronin, in order, during the 1934 All Star Game - stories like that are what legends are made of.

  7. I have a friend traveling to Phoenix, Arizona looking for Lao Food Restaurants. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Please & thank you!! Food nomad, kat
  8. A friend of mine is spending Christmas in Sedona, and she asked me for restaurant recommendations. I've got nothing! Anyone have any thoughts for her? All levels of price and food are great ... Thanks!
  9. Muhammad Ali is in the hospital now with a respiratory ailment (he's going to be released soon), but that reminds me that we don't have a thread for the person who just might be the most famous athlete who ever lived. I've always felt badly for Joe Frazier, because he didn't get the accolades that Ali did, but most of Ali's extra accolades came from what he did outside of the ring - he, himself, said that "Frazier was the greatest fighter of all times, next to me." Ali may not be immortal, but in a sense, he is - people will be talking about him 500 years from now, and that's as close to immortality as you can come. "Muhummad Ali vs. Sonny Liston (1965) - A Look Back 50 Years Later" And for a taste of what it must have been like to fight Ali in his prime, scroll down to the bottom of the first post in "Requiem for a Heavyweight (1956)" and click on the scene from the 1962 film.
  10. Friend and I are taking the kiddos for spring break. One night in Phoenix, two nights in Sedona, one night in Tuba City (hitting the Hope rez for a private tour the next day), three nights at El Tovar Hotel in Grand Canyon Village, then last night back in Phoenix near the airport for flight home. If you have any recommendations in the locations where we're staying, I'll take them. We have one reservation for the restaurant at the El Tovar - the view is supposed to be amazing and we do plan on Flagstaff and Jerome along the way as well. Thanks, Nancy
  11. Actually, from the email I just received, he's already there. "Roberto Donna Takes A Job in Arizona" by Tim Carman on washingtonpost.com ["Roberto Donna To Leave DC" by Amy McKeever on dc.eater.com ... Note: As of Mar 5, 2016, The original washingtonpost.com piece seems to be gone.] I wonder if it's possible for Tim Carman to write anything about Roberto without sounding like he hates the guy.
  12. Anyone have tips for Tucson? Haven't been out there in awhile, but will be there twice this Fall. Last time I had some good Mexican food (don't remember the names) and a good time drinking at the Kon Tiki.
