I picked up an order at Cameo the other day. Since Souk no longer has bread and I'm not baking much myself, I've been scoping out other sources. Since I was only ordering bread, I also got just a regular $3 drip coffee too. After ordering online, I arrived 30 or so minutes later. The coffee had been put out on the counter with the bread when the order was fulfilled right after I put it in, so it had been sitting a while. The upshot: their rustic bread is fantastic. The coffee, which I ordered with "a splash of milk" had exactly the right amount of milk. Since it was pretty tepid when I tried it, I'm not sure how to evaluate it beyond that. They have tasting notes, etc., on the menu. So...wait for it...I sat at a table outside with no one around and chugged about half the coffee, since it wasn't getting any hotter. First time I had consumed food or beverage at a restaurant's tables in just about a year. I reheated what was left of the coffee when I got home and it was fine, but I'll try to order when I'm nearby next time so the coffee hasn't been sitting long.

I drove past today, and there's signage up on the window of the old Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt shop, so Rare Bird is probably getting pretty close to opening. I also found this: "Food News: Rare Bird Coffee Roasters, Longhorn Steakhouse, Coming to Falls Church" by Jody Fellows on fcnp.com As far as I can tell, this is not a second outlet; they're moving their base of operations to Falls Church.

The other day, I tried the meatball (xiu mai) banh mi at Kim Phung bakery. I usually get my baguettes there but they give me the stink eye when I just buy a couple of baguettes. Verdict: not bad. The meatballs tasted okay but they were cold. They put the meatballs in the baguette and then into the toaster oven for a while. Then they add the veggies and sauce. However that just warms up the bread, but the meatballs are still cold. When I got home, I took the meatballs out and microwaved them and put them back in the sandwich. Much better that way. I really like their baguettes. Some other banh mi places use what seems to be supermarket sub rolls.

There's a newish bubble tea shop in Alexandria, Bubble Dip. I haven't been in, but they offer a variety of drinks, cupcakes, cookies, and other goodies. Looks like they opened in early May, and are located on the same block as Trattoria da Franco (300 block of S. Washington).
