  1. We were looking for a place to watch today's World Cup game, when I read about a NEW place called Biergarten Haus on H Street, right next door to the Rock N Roll Hotel. Apparently they just opened a couple of weeks ago. Given the 99 degree weather, the outdoor BeerGarden didn't sound quite so appealing at 2pm, so we went elsewhere (Flanagan's Harp & Fiddle in Bethesda), but LATER (around 7pm) we decided to check it out. It's a 21+ only place, so it's not a kid friendly place to dine. Once you walk in, you feel as if you've walked into a nice, dark, cold bar in Germany, with oodles of German beers on tap...giving you a feeling that a good rendition of OKTOBERFEST is about to ensue. As you walk past the bar, you see the entrance to the large open air Biergarten. A very celebratory high tent top loosely covers 2 huge projection screen TV's, numerous wooden tables & benches, tables for 2 on actual beer barrels & an outdoor bar. A walk past that bar puts you passing the small stage where a fun LIVE polka band was playing & leads you to the truly outdoor Biergarten, covered only by HUGE outdoor table umbrellas & a fully blooming Fig tree. With so many German beers on tap & no clue what to order as I'm generally not a beer drinker, my boyfriend correctly suggested the yummy Franziskaner Hefeweizen, a smooth, ever so slightly sweet (but not like a Lambic) beer with clear tones of banana, honey & clove. A DEFINITE choice for non-beer drinkers or those that would like a soft & smooth refreshing beer. With all the right ambiance: outdoor Beergarden, live Polka band & yummy beer, we of course, had to try out the food which looked incredible. We all got the DELICIOUS Knackwurst Platter (veal, pork & fresh garlic) with the YUMMY sauerkraut (cooked with stewed apples, Caraway seeds & bacon) & the potato cake (taste was OK, but it wasn't crisp or memorable like its plate companions), topped with a tasty fresh white bun. After the more than satisfying meal, although quite full, we all decided that when in Rome (or a Biergarten), you gotta try the Homemade Black Forest Cake...and boy are we glad we did!! Rich sweet creme, soft & moist German chocolate layer cake & tart cherries, all topped with generous shavings of German chocolate. Ohhhh...I almost forgot. Don't expect to only hear live polka music & German drinking songs (plenty are played), but we were also treated to a sudden random karaoke rendition of Garth Brooks' "I Got Friend's in Low Places" Silly but fun, because it was only that one song. You could see they are still not fully up & running as we saw 3 empty mounted TV wall brackets in the full outdoor Biergarten. We overheard that they are waiting to have murals painted outside before installing those TVs. My friend who lived in Germany for over 1 year said he was definitely feeling this place, the beer & the food. Definitely a new favorite hang out spot. Curious to hear what others have to say about this place.
  2. "New Beer Garden Coming to Old Building on Columbia Pike" by ARLnow.com on wtop.com Located on the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed, a new beer garden is in the works.
  3. I couldn't find a topic on this neighborhood joint (and I've been spending a lot of time there) so I decided to add one. This place is a big reason for my jump back on the beer bandwagon. They always have a great beer on tap and really nothing beats drinking outside on a nice day. The place is a little crazy with children during the early hours but eases in to an older crowd as it gets later. There is actually some decent food at the deli counter depending on the day, and if you want beer to go Westover simply has one of the greatest selections in the area, including kegs.
  4. Location and Rates for Tonight - Website with Best-Rate Matching Are you looking for a see-through shower? Yup, The Standard has that. Do you like rooftop bars? The Standard has one, natch. What's that you say? You want a velvet rope limiting access to that rooftop bar on weekends? You're not going to believe this, but that is exactly what they do at The Standard. Let's say it's 4 o'clock in the morning and for some reason your forgot to eat dinner the night before and you are super hungry. You're screwed, right? Not at The Standard, because they have a restaurant that is open 24/7. I mean, it's never closed. Conveniently located downtown two blocks from the 7th Street / Metro Center Station. The room rates can vary, but is always on the list of places to check when price shopping. You could do worse. Don't believe me? Just go ask Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They got pictures.
  5. I did not know there's a sausage party in my backyard, it's called Tysons Biergarten. You have to buy food and drink tokens. Website
  6. Down an out of the way road in Jessup, a group of friends and I had a fun evening at Blob's Park Bavarian Beer Garden last night. I had heard stories of this place for some time. A few of my childhood friends' parents used to got here for literal buckets of beer and dancing when I was growing up in the area. The space is huge, designed to seat 800 people. We were lucky to have the evening's band be Steve Meisner and his polka band from Madison, WI. There are regulars to this place, their tables marked with wood plaques engraved with their names. There were a lot of families with children running around. We ordered pitchers of Spaten pils and octoberfest to start- no more buckets. Too bad. We then got several appetizers including their pork wings, sausage plates, and very salty Bavarian radishes. I had a weisswurst plate, and then a taste of their German chocolate cake. While the cuisine was not stellar, the atmosphere was the real draw. The polka band started up at 8, and was greeted by a line of regulars who stood in front playing instruments like tambourine and washboards to the first song. Then everyone danced polka or western swing or whatever to the night's sets of music. It felt like night in the Midwest again.
  7. From Bethesda magazine: opening in later summer. I am pretty jazzed about this opening. Hopefully it will live up to other NRG spots. Will be interesting to see how they deal with Montgomery County liquor controls (although selection in Montgomery has gotten much better in the last year as far as beer in concerned).
  8. I've never started a thread before, but I searched for Takoda and didn't find a thread, and we had a fantastic experience there tonight, so I wanted to let folks know. If this is in the wrong place, please forgive me. A mom and dad and seven year old girl looking for somewhere fun on a bonus weekend night. Loved the idea of beers and whiskies, plus a food menu that sounded like the chef cared. It hit on all cylinders. We all were excited. Great beers on tap (24) and a spot-on Old Fashioned with a beer syrup. They offer wings and cauliflower florets with the same choices of sauce; PB&J bbq sauce, Old Bay seasoning, and Parmesan Garlic. We got the cauliflower with parm garlic and fought each other over it. Perfect texture between crispy and with some give, and the sauce was awesome. Iceberg salad was good -- the crispy onions were excellent -- but needed some more dressing. The Mac and cheese was pretty perfect in my book. Real cheese taste, al dente pasta, and some pepper heat. Cheesy but not creamy, which is how I like it. Got it with chicken for a little protein. Salmon cakes were nicely seasoned and full of salmon, not filler. Nice crunch of corn with it. My husband got shrimp and grits and polished it off. I didn't taste it, but it looked good. Interestingly, it had a dark sauce, kind of roux looking. Had fruity pebbles ice cream at server's suggestion. Was skeptical when ordering, but it was fantastic. Very cool space with window tables overlooking Florida, plus cozy high booths and a long bat. There is also a rooftop beer garden, which looked fantastic on a quick glance, but we didn't eat up there (though lots of folks were).
  9. I have an affinity for inexpensive rye whiskey. Especially Old Overholt. So when I read that a new bar called The Airedale was going to serve Old Overholt soft serve ice cream I knew I had to try it. Eatruneat and I made our way up there around four in the afternoon on Saturday to find the place almost completely empty. Our friends met us soon after and were terribly disappointed to find that they were not serving food at the moment. Eatruneat and her friend had just run almost twenty miles and were in a 'caloric deficit'. But the kitchen was transitioning from the brunch to regular menu wouldn't be ready until 5. Eatruneat and her friend sucked it up and just ordered beers after our bartender and bar manager promised to take their order as soon as possible. At 4:57 one the cooks popped his head out of the kitchen and gave our bartender the nod. Eatruneat ordered the la mitraillette and her friend got the Royale with cheese sans cheese. Eatruneat's friend said that her burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the veggies on top tasted really fresh. As for Eatruneat's dish, I don't know where to begin...and I don't think she did either. Her 'sandwich' was insane. Imagine an open faced baguette with a butterflied half smoke topped with pieces of ground chuck topped with onions topped with french fries with mayo and ketchup topping it all off. It was truly a sight. After they finished their dishes it was time for the reason we went there in the first place, the ice cream. Eatruneat and her friend thought it tasted a lot like Old Overholt where as my friend and I though you could really only taste the whiskey during the finish of the ice cream; however we did find a winning combo. When paired with a 'hard' root beer the ice cream really shines. We will be back for that combo - and maybe that crazy 'sandwich' again - as well as the friendly staff and nice atmosphere. On a side note, Eatruneat's friend noticed that the stairs going to the upstairs, where the bathrooms and outdoor deck are located, are floating and she was pretty sure 'flashed half of the bar' when walking up them in her dress. Be careful, ladies!
  10. Named for Bangkok's airport code, BKK Cookshop is the third restaurant from the team behind Thai X-ing. The taste and feel of this place is different from either the newly opened Thai X-ing or chef Aschara Vigsittaboot's sister's place, Beau Thai. The menu is a lot more focused and there's barely any mention of peanuts on it in any form. One thing that will be familiar to anyone who has eaten at Thai X-ing is the pace. I highly recommend that you order each course at a time and not all at once. Otherwise all of your food will be on the table within two minutes of ordering. Eatruneat and I had just begun to enjoy the spicy pork steamed buns and brussels sprouts when my bowl of pork boat noodle bowl and her tom yum noodle bowl appeared. We shuffled enough plates around to make everything fit and tried to eat everything as quickly as we could before any of it got cold. As we finished the buns and sprouts the waitresses appeared seemingly out of nowhere like vultures on a wildebeest carcass after lions have had their fill and walked off to snatch up the plates. Neither Eatruneat or I enjoyed my boat noodle bowl. The meat was tender and the noodles were perfectly cooked. There was just something off about the broth. And as anyone who enjoys soup from any part of the world knows, the broth must be good or nothing else matters. Luckily Eatruneat shared some of the broth from her tom yum soup, which was spectacular. Overall, it was a mediocre experience and I won't be headed back anytime soon. Well, maybe to have those pork steamed buns again after a few cocktails at All Souls.
  11. Leland Estes has departed from Menomale, the fine little pizzeria pillbox in Brookland (near Catholic University in Washington, DC), where he assembled a wonderful little beer program. He is now GM of Clinton Hall, a beer garden near the World Trade Center. I don't know Leland personally, but if his prior work is any indication, this is New York's gain; DC's loss.
