  1. Mr P and I tried Passage to India for lunch today, and it may just be the best Indian food I've ever had. The first adjective that popped into mind, after trying a bite of lamb stew with dried apricot and thin sticks of fried potato (salli boti jardaloo), was "elegant". I don't believe I've ever felt that way about Indian food before. The words "subtle" and "nuanced" also came to mind. In addition to the stew, we tried aloo tak: crisp potatoes in three sauces - yogurt, tamarind, and, um, green samosa chaat: a samosa perched on mildly spiced chickpeas - quite good although the bottom of the samosa got soggy rather quickly makhmali kofta: vegetable dumplings in a delicious creamy sauce that I can't begin to decipher palak makai: spinach and corn cooked together - soft, creamy, subtly nuanced and elegant... also, I asked for and was served a half portion, at close to half price; this isn't on the menu but good to know that they'll do it chaina kheer: a dessert not unlike my beloved rasmalai, tiny paneer patties in a milk sauce with saffron and pistachios the tea was pretty decent, too; think I tasted cardamom and cinnamon in it No dinner for me tonight. I last dined in this space when it was an outpost of Heritage India, and the experience was not good. Passage to India, though... wow. Damn fine food. And there's goat on the menu! I'll be going back soon.
  2. Have been stopping at the wholesale bakery for Balthazar located in Englewood NJ for 2 days. Wonderful breads plus amazing tarts which might be more like spectacular toppings the likes of which I’ve never had.
  3. Since there was no thread for this restaurant on its own - there is now. Apparently the 2nd venture for the Lahlou Restaurant Group, their 1st being Lupo Verde Cucina & Bar. Stopped in late afternoon looking for some decent Italian food - the group of people (management) graciously greeted us and welcomed us to their establishment. We had viewed the menu posted outside and wanted to see if they could accommodate Ghocchi for our kids who wanted tomato-based sauce instead of (GNOCCHI 22,ASPARAGUS, WILD MUSHROOMS, FONDUTA, SPRING PEAS, GELATO AL PARMIGIANO), which in unison, they replied "absolutely, we can make anything the way you want it." It did not disappoint and the Gnocchi was outstanding. We also had a PACCHERI 28 BLUE CRAB, SHRIMP, SQUID, GARLIC, SAFFRON BRODETTO which was excellent and flavorful. The fresh-baked bread that accompanied our meal helped me make sure my plate was clean enough to place back on the shelf without washing 😁. We also ordered the tomato and fresh mozzarella pizza to round out the meal. Staff was accommodating and sincerely friendly. This place is tucked away off the main part of the Wharf on a secondary street but easy to find. The food came out promptly and we felt like they appreciated our visit. If in the area and interested in a moderately-priced, fresh Italian meal, give it a shot.
  4. Soooooooo for once this isn't some far flung spot but one right in your midst. Indeed, you may have past by this spot before and never noticed it as it is inside an office building. My Mom was the recommender in this case and Arcade Bakery is actually a surprisingly good bakery. It literally is barely bigger then your room probably and is located in a hallway of an office building and the tables can be removed into the wall at night. I had the ham sandwich with a sharpish cheese and cornichons as well as mustard as I recall and it was quite nice and I was sad I didn't bring some of the bread home and was also sad I didn't have the pain au chocolate etc. They also amazingly have a pizza oven that does small pizzas which. Nevertheless, this was very enjoyable and a different experience to your regular bakeryyyyyssss so stop innnn.
  5. I know you are probably in the District, but Mom's Apple Pie Company in Herndon makes great pies. It is all they do. I don't know if they sell at any of the farmer's markets but you may want to call them. They are seriously good. Moms Apple Pie Co.
  6. Apparently New Yorkers go nuts for these hockey puck sized cookies. It's a good cookie, I would even call the oatmeal raisin a very good cookie. Would I line up for one? Probably not. I guess you can consider Levain to be the Georgetown Cupcake of New York City cookie stores. Levain Bakery Upper West Side and Harlem
  7. Hi all! I'm writing to make you aware that PAUL Bakery, a 120 yr. old upscale authentic French bakery, will be opening up its US Flagship shop on May 2, 2011 in Penn Quarter. PAUL is an authentic family-owned boulangerie (Bakery Café) that delivers the highest quality, freshly-baked bread & pastries in a traditional French bakery environment. It will be open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. In Washington, our breads will include traditional baguettes and country breads, whole grain breads, and fruit and nut breads. We will serve the flaky, buttery croissants and pains au chocolat that you can normally only find in France. PAUL will also offer a wide range of sandwiches "“ that are made on baguettes, quiches, salads and soups to be enjoyed in the bakery or to take away. At night, you'll also be able to enjoy a glass of wine to accompany a baguette with cheese and charcuterie plate. PAUL will be located in one of DC's most prime retail/restaurant locations: 801 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, with its front doors opening onto the plaza of the US Navy Memorial, and directly across from The National Archives. A second PAUL store will open in Georgetown at the corner of Wisconsin Ave. and M St. later in the year.
