  1. I feel like I am on a mission to find really good, fast, and tasty lunch places while working downtown near Metro Center for this month. Today's find was based on a recent post for quick lunch ideas near Metro Center (see post #12 for original suggestion), specifically, a recommendation for Mayur Kabab House. Having driven past there numerous times, but not brave enough to go in until today, I was quite pleased with the results. For lunch, the best option is their Lunch Buffet for $8.00 (tax included). The buffet, which can be dine-in or carry out (I chose the latter) includes four vegetable dishes, chicken curry (bone-in), chicken kabab (also bone-in) and rice and baked naan. The portions were HUGE, to the extent that I now have dinner too. The vegetable dishes for today were: daal, paneer with peas, an eggplant dish, and a cauliflower dish. The eggplant was very soft and flavorful and the chicken kabob and curry chicken both very moist and not dried out from the burners. Would definitely go back.
  2. I'm guessing this will occupy the space where Great American buffet is (was?). "Restaurant Lease Brings Crossroads Place in Falls Church to Full Occupancy" by De Castillo on patch.com
  3. Eastern Kabob & Sweets is located in the Sugarloaf Shopping Center in Germantown. They have a buffet all the time, but I haven't tried it yet. Each of the last two times I have visited I ordered chapli. Each time it was amazing. The first time I got the beef and my friend got the chicken. Both were good, but the beef was better. It had a nice char on it which added an additional layer of flavor. The dish comes with two "patties" on a bed of rice, with shaved onion on top. The platter also comes with so stewed chickpeas and naan. It is a BARGAIN at $11.99. There is a ton of flavor in the chapli. The rice is also well seasoned and slightly spicy. Each time I ordered the dish spicy, but the heat was a bit restrained--that's okay because it was packed with flavor. As far as decor goes, it is bright and clean, with some flat screens playing Pakistani videos. The staff is nice enough. They also have some disco lights going. They are open late Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  4. Pursuant to Don's exhortation to post our most recent dining experience, I offer the following commentary on Delhi Dhaba's Bethesda location. We had the buffet lunch there on Saturday. A massive dog-themed street fair had closed the street (Woodmont), and Delhi Dhaba was one of the few restaurants with enough outdoor seating to accommodate four adults, a child, and an infant. The buffet was small and nondescript, but contained nothing offensive: decent butter chicken; okay tandoori chicken; dal; a potato/pepper dish that was pretty good; palak paneer that was a little light on the paneer (had to go fishing with the ladle). There were a couple other things, but I can't remember what they were. Naan was a bit dry. I did enjoy the gulab jamun for dessert. It wasn't as sickly-sweet as that dessert (along with many other Indian desserts) often is. Service was par for the Indian restaurant course: Not what one would call attentive or speedy, but no one punched me in the face. So, not bad. But since I have to get in my car to go there, I'd veer eastward and head to Woodlands to satisfy my buffet itches every time.

  6. Went to Hee Been last night with the guys for a little farewell party for one of us. Our host was the architect who designed the interior of this place which is quite stunning. Had beef and chicken BBQ with all the fixins' and a good sample of the sushi and sashimi offered at this establishment -- washed down with soju. Don't recall much other than that food was excellent. The staff doesn't speak much English, but if you can find some Korean friends to escort you go. Hee Been PS: Mee Kim the young bartender is very cute and enthusiastic -- just the way I likes 'em
  7. My friend & I have been meeting at this place for lunch several times a month for a few years now. It changed hands about a month ago, I was surprised because it always seemed busy when we were there, it reopened after a short time w/ a new name, the only other change seemed to be that you now pay for your buffet meal before you eat. We met there on Friday & the parking lot was full & the place was packed! We actually had to wait a short time for a table & this is a fairly large place. For a Chinese buffet lunch, it's a safe bet-still a large variety of seafood-fish, crabs, squid, & my favorite, fried whole shrimp. It's also got a few 'western' dishes (fries, pizza, chicken nuggets) for kids & picky eaters (we always dine w/ her 5 yr. old, but she eats the good stuff). There are 4 buffet tables -lots of salads, including kimchee, & fruit, & a good selection of dumplings (also chicken feet, but I haven't been brave enough to try them). For an inexpensive lunch, w/ good variety & service, it's worth a try, if you're in the area...
