  1. Just returned from my second foray up to Cuba de Ayer in Burtonsville. Excellent traditional Cuban dishes. Great soup, great picadillo and ropa viejo, and the best flan I've ever come across---very dense, served in wedges like a torte. Crispy tostones and maduros. They also have Cuban sandwiches which I haven't yet tried but they looked good at the next table. Unfortunately a ways out (about 15 minutes past Silver Spring on Rt 29) It's located on Rt. 198 about 300 yards west of Rt. 29, in a strip center towards the back and a bit out of sight from the road, on the North side. But worth the drive. Better than Cubanos, and definitely better than Cuban Corner IMO. Eve Z. gave it a good write-up a few months ago. And if you go on a Friday eve. the Amish farmers' market on the corner will be open and that by itself is also worth the trip. Highly recommended.
  2. It's been a while since I've been to Maiwand Grill, but this place had some great kabobs and pumpkin. I don't know if this is connected to the Maiwand Kabob in Columbia, but this is near Cuba de Ayer.
  3. I have been getting my Indian delivery fix from this place and it's very good. I have never been to the spot and don't really know where in Burtonsville it is, but it's delicious. Deliveries have been prompt and accurate Website Garam masala wings should be a thing everywhere. They should come with raita without asking, which they might but I ask for extra raita every time so I don't know. The naan is as crisp as you could expect from delivery. I bet it's great dining in. I had never heard of Chicken 65 but I guess it's a thing. A delicious spicy breaded chicken nugget thing here. Curries are great, with various choices of rice, chickpeas, salad, etc for various charges or not. Lamb curries have been excellent. Tons of food for the money but also delicious. Samosa and pakora are pretty standard but the standard is good. As important as anything, the gulab jamun is great. I love a small bite or two for dessert without being weighed down in price or calories. Some Indian places can't get this right, but it's good here. Without throwing any other local indian delivery under the bus, this is the one to get by far. They are on grubhub but not eat24, which is great because you aren't accidentally encouraged to give yelp 2 bucks.
  4. If you live near Burtonsville, then it's worth making a summer drive over to Seibel's on Rte 198 for homemade ice cream. Seibel's is a family-style restaurant at Rte 198 and Rte 29 where they have been mixing up their own ice cream since 1939. From the outside, it doesn't look like a place with inspired food, but I had heard raves from people had visited. As it turns out, the ice cream was pretty good. Both the banana and the lemon ice creams were creamy and full of flavor. The lemon violated our ice cream rules -- coming in a yellow tint that sure doesn't look like lemon juice. But the flavors were real fruit, and they came in big waffle cones that we enjoyed in our car. I don't know anywhere in Columbia that makes its own ice cream, so a drive down to Seibel's is a sweet adventure for a summer night.
  5. Just tried this relatively new place for lunch. Actually, I went in there for coffee and found it's the most poorly named restaurant in the world, because it's not just a coffee house; it has a full Ethiopian menu. I got the lamb tibs just because I had them Sunday at Dukem and wanted a fresh comparison to what I think is the best. These stood up well to the urban competition. Smaller pieces of meat and not as spicy (heat wise) as Dukem but with great flavor. Lunch special for 8.50 was a good size serving of the tibs with 2 veggie sides, all neatly wrapped in injera for carryout. I was more than satisfied, and am very happy to have found decent Ethiopian out in the burbs. http://www.coffeeoromia.com/
  6. This is the original location of the Old Hickory Grille (I understand that there are several more now, but I've not been to any of them) and has been here for years. It has become a standby when we are in the mood for a steak salad or roast chicken. The place has expanded over the years but still maintains its original flavor. It has a definite Cajun slant, what with fried oysters and oyster po'boys, Cajun spring rolls, etc., but it is still best to stick to the tried and true. The kitchen/grill is open and you can watch as they prepare your food. The roast chicken is excellent, marinated for 24 hours then slow roasted. It is my son's favorite. I love the steak salad, a huge salad with perfectly grilled steak, balsamic marinated and sauted onions and your choice of dressing. I really like the horseradish dressing. The ribs are huge and meaty, not the little baby backs that some places sell (though I did notice the last time I was there that you could get babybacks, a downturn in my view) and there is a nice "cowboy" steak on the menu frequently. The fried oysters are excellent, lightly breaded in cornmeal and served on a bed of the horseradish dressing with a corn and tomato salsa. The fries are thin, crispy, and come in a huge pile, and the mashed potatos are excellent. The BBQ beans are a little sweet for my taste, and the cole slaw could use a little more kick. Service is very friendly and efficient. When you first come in you get a basket of home made cornbread biskets and white biskets. Hot and tasty. There is a wine list, but it is ordinary and forgetable. I like the iced tea. While this is not necessarily a destination, it is a very good stop on the way home if you are in the area and even worth a little of a drive if your are not. And right next door is Rita's for some italian ice.
  7. Attending the Preakness Stakes in Pimilco with family on Saturday. Looking for a post-race dinner at around 8:30 pm somewhere in the vicinity or on the way back to DC. Woodberry Kitchen is booked solid, as expected. I've never been to Mt. Washington Tavern or Nickel Taphouse. Ellicott City might be an option with Tersiguel's or the new Portalli's. But I'm a little concerned about whether French would be too upscale after spending all afternoon outside. I don't know much about Portalli's. I know parking anywhere in this area is difficult. Iron Bridge Wine Company would be nice, but it's a little out of the way and they don't have reservations available until much later at night. Something like the Kings Contrivance or the Elkridge Furnace Inn would probably be a little too stuffy for us. I've never been to G & M Restaurant, but it may be too casual on the other end of the spectrum. Any other ideas for some lively atmosphere or a somewhat historic setting near Pimilco or in a small town suburb not far from 295/95 on the way back to DC?
