  1. Romeo & Juliet Garden Café has replaced White Tiger at 301 Massachusetts Avenue NE, opening Jul 16, 2015. "A New Restaurant On The Hill Applies for Late Hours, Hiilarity Ensues" on barredindc.com "Romeo & Juliet - Garden Café Coming Soon Signage Up at Former White Tiger Space on Capitol Hill" on popville.com Website - Facebook
  2. I've lived on the Hill for about a year and a half now, and last night was the second time I have ever eaten at White Tiger. Both of my meals there have been good, but the service both times was atrocious. Just very very very slow to have orders taken, receive meals, get check, etc. But since it's one of only a few restaurants in the neighborhood, I will likely be back. Three of us started with an order of Naan (a little crispy for my taste, but not bad) and an order of Paneer Mushroom Shaslik (Skewered chunks of farmers cheese, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers flavored with fresh ground spices and cooked in the tandoor). I actually really enjoyed this simple app with the two dipping sauces (one red and one green and I could not for the life of me tell you what they are). Plenty for three of us to share before our entrees arrived. I had the Murg Makhani (house special of tandoor chicken sauteed in a tomato based sace) and although I would have liked it a little spicier, I still managed to finish it off even though I was stuffed. One of my friends said it was too "Italian" (read: tomatoey) for her. Our favorite dish at the table was the Pepper Chettinad Varuval (chicken cooked with black pepper and spices). This was the spiciest of the table and I think I would get this next time I go back. The third friend got a lamb dish that I can't remember. I liked the sauce on hers, but since I don't usually eat lamb, I didn't try too much. All of us left stuffed for not a ton of money. Is it the best Indian in the city? Of course not. Would I go back? Yep. Would I make sure I had plenty of time and didn't have to rush anywhere afterwards? You know it. I'm actually headed to Rasika tonight for the first time, so we'll see what kind of comparison that draws!
  3. While I realize that this thread has been asleep for awhile, i just had to voice my displeasure with my lunch. I met a friend at Kyoto near Union Station/ SOBs and it is horrible. I had a box, nothing too hard, difficult, or fancy. Everything was oily and deep fried, even the pot stickers. Do they not own a steamer? They should be ashamed of themselves servingthat crap as "Japanese". Anyway, I smell like greese and now feel a tad bit better. Oh, the coke was good. (I know I've said it before but I like good coke and it's hard to find.)
  4. Banducci's at 2nd & F Streets NE is closed and construction's been ongoing for the past 6 weeks, inside & out. I spoke w/ the building owner (John) a few weeks ago. He says that a Roberto Donna protege (named Danielli?) is opening a rustic northern Italian restaurant. The chef also worked at Panache. The space is quite small. Looks like, as before, it'll be a counter downstairs and tables upstairs. Inside looks largely the same. They've torn out the overgrown bushes that used to seperate the patio from the first house on F St. Its paved and they've done other concrete work on the patio. From the look & sound of things, I'm not sure what will be so different from the old Banducci's business model. Its a small space with as much outdoor seating in the summer as he has upstairs year round. A website is up and also mentions catering. Interested to see what develops....
  5. I went for coffee the other day after dropping one of the cats off at the vet (poor baby had to have dental work done. I felt very guilty.) The cats go to Union Vet, so this meant that I was right across the street from Ebeneezer's Coffee. So, I got a nice latte there. Again, not quite as hot as I like, but it had a very nice flavor. I would get it again, although I would order it extra hot.
  6. So, as a new occupant of the Hall of States, I just received a call from a friend who asked if I had heard the great local dining news. According to his "sources" La Colline will be shutting down sometime next week and replacing it will be..... Johnny's Half Shell This may also may explain the LA Times article last week about business being down. While I am happy for a new dining destination, I also have my doubts that it's another JHS, but what do I know. Anyone able to verify either way?
