  1. Apologies if I missed it, but there doesn't seem to be a thread on Lutece in Georgetown. Modern bistro. Very seasonal. Subtle but excellent cooking.
  2. I've been so busy with other things that I've neglected any planning for an upcoming trip, so I need some ideas. Here's the scenario: Mr. P will be in SF for two weeks for work, and will probably be hanging out with co-workers most evenings. I'm flying out to join him on Wednesday and staying for the weekend. So, I need solo dinner options for Wednesday and Thursday, and "date night" options for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We're staying close to the Ferry Terminal building, but don't mind taking public transport to just about anywhere. Here's the important thing: l want low-key places. I'm not going to bring any fancy clothes and these days I really don't like formal dining. If my clone was coming to DC I'd tell her to go to Tail Up Goat and Himitsu. I'll consider any cuisine. Many thanks.
  3. My wife and I have been going to Havabite in Old Town Fairfax for a while now. Our kids love it. In fact, my daughter picked it for her birthday dinner yesterday. My daughter and I are fans of the bacon pizza. Not bacon bits, but nice strips of bacon. My wife generally gets the chicken souvlaki. Last night, we ordered the hummus appetizer and enjoyed that too. They also have gyros, Greek salads, Greek appetizers, Greek entrees, pasta, calzones, subs, and burgers. This place is very reasonably priced and offers friendly service. That's friendly service, not necessarily speedy service. They sometimes take their time. But, I mainly wanted to post this to mention the friendly service they provided last night for my daughter's birthday. We ordered my daughter's birthday cake from Victoria's Cakery, which is on the same block as Havabite. Unfortunately, they close at 5 PM on weekdays and we weren't going to be able to get there in time. When my wife mentioned that we were hoping to get the cake when we were in the area at Havabite, they suggest we ask Havabite if they can pick it up for us. Well, we did and they did. They picked up the cake for us and kept it for us until we finished dinner (around 8 PM). Then they brought it out for us with plates and forks.
  4. I'll be taking my 5, I mean 5 and 3/4 year-old daughter to the big city the week of Thanksgiving. I'm not sure which days yet, but we'll likely be there 3 or 4 days. Some of my family are heading up there to take my 9 year-old niece to the Macy's Day Parade. I'm hoping NOT to attend that part. Anyway, it's been an unforgivably long time since I've been there, and I've never been there with kids. Any ideas about casual restaurants that perhaps have a kid-friendly spin, or other foodie destinations like markets? Also, where would one dine for Thanksgiving dinner?
  5. My daughter just graduated from college and is moving to DC July 1 to start her new job, and I'll be spending a couple of days down there helping her move and celebrating the 4th. I don't get to DC that often though I live just north in Frederick, MD. so I'm looking for some dining options. Her new apartment is near the Convention Center, but we will be touring around DC with the rest of the tourists on the 4th. She loves to cook and eat good food - but she's not a fine diner (nor am I). Foams, foie gras, etc. are not up her alley. ALso, please note that Mom (that's me) will be footing the bill for the 15 meals to come. So.... Komi it ain't! What would be some good casual not too expensive places that we might consider for lunch and dinner? FWIW, we went to Rasika yesterday and LOVED it! Thanks!
  6. Hi All-- I'd like to take my SO out for a special birthday dinner in a couple of weeks. Looking for suggestions. She's a vegetarian so we need options for her. I'm a carnivore so I hope to be happy too. Looking for something in the $150 range all in. Close to Fairfax would be swell, but I'm happy to take a spin into DC as well. Nothing dressy. On the quiet side. Decent wine list for her, but I don't drink.
  7. I told myself not to expect too much. Most of the carry out I've had from this area has ranged from mediocre to downright awful. But I was tired and hungry, and in the mood for something different. The staff were polite, both on the phone and in person. The restaurant was pleasant enough, and about 75% full on a Wednesday night in north Springfield (nearly Annandale). I ordered Calamara Grigliati and Spaghetti Porto Venere. It sounded good at the time. The calamari was packed in a black styrofoam container. When I opened it, the food looked pretty--attractive--maybe even beautiful. The squid was coated with a red seasoning, flecked with black grill marks. It was laid on sliced tomatoes drizzled with pesto, over a bed of chopped lettuce. It tasted as good as it looked, and maybe better. It is my new favorite calamari dish, supplanting Kinkead's grilled calamari appetizer. San Vito's grilled calamari was perfectly cooked--tender, tasty, flavored with smoke and gentle spices. The pesto enriched the flavor of the tomatoes, and set off the squid nicely. Wow! I wanted a second helping, not because the serving size was small, but because it tasted that good. The mussels were nicely presented, all in their shells atop spaghetti draped in marinara sauce. It was a generous portion, with plenty of mussels. It tasted like mussels, and the sauce was rich, tomatoey, and sweet. Many otherwise good dishes, including seafood, lose a lot as takeout. I'm figuring that, if this food was so good at home, it's probably really good in the restaurant. I'm already contemplating my next order. I don't know why I waited so long to try this place. It's only half a mile from home. Finally: decent carryout! ETA: I'm talking about the Kings Park/Springfield restaurant, and to fix spelling.
  8. Far down the tidal Potomac is the small community of Abell, Maryland on Canoe Neck Creek, just off of St. Clements Bay. Morris Point juts out into Canoe Neck Creek, and at the end of this point lies Morris Point Restaurant. This is a small restaurant with a tiny little open kitchen, mostly attended by locals. The menu features seafood, pasta, and casual American options (sandwiches, burgers, etc). We usually stop by during the midafternoon lull while out on the water for some light fare. The Clam Pot is one of the more popular choices; not being a big fan of clams, I tend to opt for the Maryland Vegetable Crab soup or a slice of Key Lime Pie, or perhaps the Crab Dip Florentine for something a little more filling. Driving to the restaurant involves wandering down a series of small residential roads; the restaurant is perhaps more easily reached by boat. They have a dock large enough to host several vessels and are quite welcoming to boaters. There are a handful of tables in the main restaurant, plus some outdoor tables on the dock that are used in summer. The restrooms require a trip outside to a separate entrance. Open Friday - Sunday only. 38869 Morris Point Rd, Abell, MD 20606
