we will be in dc for a few days in just over a month. staying in a hotel near the convention center. days will be spent taking the kids to the smithsonian museums. interested in recommendations for places for dinner in relatively easy reach of the convention center area where parents can eat interesting food and kids can be pleased as well. easiest ways to please them: grilled meats, roast chicken and similar. the menus of le diplomate or maydan, for example, seem like they might be doable, as would any good thai or other southeast asian place sans long lines. also interested in any decent lunch within easy reach of the museums. thanks in advance! -
I saw a post on Matsu Sushi in the Chantilly thread, but I couldn't find a topic, so I started one. Website Hours: LUNCH Mon-Fri 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM Sat 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM DINNER Mon-Thurs 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM Fri-Sat 5:00 PM - 10:30 PM Sun 5:00 PM - 9:30 PM I went there for lunch with my brother today as it was close to his office and I haven't had sushi in a while. For lunch it was extremely efficient and you can definitely get in and out on a reasonable lunch time schedule. We both got sushi with miso soup and salad. Their salad dressing was fine, but not my favorite. Their miso soup was a bit too cloudy, but again was fine. The sushi was very uniform and neat. The rice was nicely prepared and I thought they did a very good job with the rice. I thought everything was very fresh and they had a nice selection. It wouldn't be my top sushi choice in all the sushi places I can go to, but I was really impressed at the service, how fast and efficient it was and how fresh everything was for a shopping center in Centreville. THAT would make me go back. -
Rainy days and Mondays - well, now just rainy days. Going to take some kids to see Shaun the Sheep at University Mall Theater in Fairfax tomorrow, as every single kid activity is now cancelled. Totally unfamiliar with that area - is there a place to grab lunch nearby before the movie? He'll eat Middle Eastern so props for that, or even a diner. Thanks, Nancy -
I'll be taking my 5, I mean 5 and 3/4 year-old daughter to the big city the week of Thanksgiving. I'm not sure which days yet, but we'll likely be there 3 or 4 days. Some of my family are heading up there to take my 9 year-old niece to the Macy's Day Parade. I'm hoping NOT to attend that part. Anyway, it's been an unforgivably long time since I've been there, and I've never been there with kids. Any ideas about casual restaurants that perhaps have a kid-friendly spin, or other foodie destinations like markets? Also, where would one dine for Thanksgiving dinner? -
My niece and her four young, active, rowdy kids are visiting Washington DC for Spring Break. We want to get together Thursday evening. They are staying with another aunt in Silver Spring. At least nine people for dinner. So, we need a big table and fast service. NOT gourmet. I am partial to Pete's Apizza because the GM lives next door to me and also they have gluten free pizzas. Person who answered the phone at the Silver Spring location says that they are suitable for the parameters I describe, fast and lots of room, kid friendly. Any other suggestions? -
I am going to dinner next Friday with my best friend. She has two boys, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 years old. They eat a lot of things and are pretty comfortable in that regard. The 2 1/2 year old doesn't eat a whole lot. He is allergic to dairy, eggs, nuts and sesame. My Bestie said not to worry about him too much, but I need a restaurant who will at least take the allergy seriously and where we can likely find something for him. I will be footing the bill so any price. They will probably be at the Smithsonian beforehand, but they are extremely low key and can travel somewhat in DC or potentially meet closer to me in Arlington. I have had food restrictions, but am not as sure on places that can handle allergies like this that are also not a horrible place to have kiddos (although they are very good little boys). I will certainly call any place before going.

May need to get a gang of 5, including and 8-year-old and an 11-year-old into a restaurant in or near Annapolis with short notice on a Friday night. Decent food and a high likelihood of last-minute availability are key. The closer to home base -- walking distance from Mike's, on Riva Road (dietary restrictions preclude shellfish) -- the better. We are taking the little guy to the Empire State Building next Saturday. After that we have to be at a concert at W 21st and 5th Ave by 6:30. So we are looking for a kid-friendly, not budget busting, dinner that we can have around 4:30 or 5 pm. He has pretty wide-ranging tastes but taking him to Craft is kind of out of my budget. At six, he is eating more than I am and I don't want to discuss how tall he is. And I suspect that he will be a little (a lot) wired post-ESB so someplace where the volume is already a little on the exuberant side, would be a good thing. Thanks!
