  1. We tried Noodle King Restaurant last week. It is on northbound New Hampshire Avenue, between White Oak and Colesville. It's hidden between a pizza shop and a beer & wine store. Parking and entrance are around back. The cross street is Hollywood Avenue. The lot is across Hollywood from JR Wright plant nursery. They have been there for a few years but it was my first visit. My folks heard about it from their firends. Family owned, authentic Cantonese food. Keep that in mind when ordering--they definitely do a better job with southern dishes. Meal #1, dinner for 4. We ordered: beef satay--beef a little chewy, probably deep fried instead of charcoal grilled, would not order again chicken wings--great crispy batter but served by itself, sauce (like Thai sweet chili) would make it better Ja-Jain Mein(Beijing Style)--good egg noodles but sauce had muted flavor, not pungent with garlic and chilies like it should be; corrected with some of their house made chili paste Beef Chow Fun (Dry)--great job, not too oily, just enough char on the beef Seafood Pan Fried Noodle--outside of noodles was crispy but middle was soggy; sauce was watery and goopy at the same time. I would ask them for sauce on the side next time. Meal #2, lunch for 2. sweet and sour spicy (pickled) cabbage Diced Chicken & Salted Fish Fried Rice--great flavor, a little julienned lettuce for crunch; salted fish was reconstituted well and not too salty Beef Chow Fun (Dry)--i liked it so much I had to order it again On my next visit, I plan to check out their roast duck and Hong Kong style noodles.
  2. Every Achilles has his heel, and my reputation-destroyer is Dominic's. Dominic's has been around forever, in various guises. Thirty years ago it was called Gus's, and before that it was called Valencia. Despite a couple ownership changes over the decades, one thing has remained constant: the pizza oven. It's a good, hot, 1960s-era oven that gives off the loveliest of golden chars to the crust, and that crust is the only rational reason to get carryout from this dive. Let's hold no illusions about Dominic's: Other than the oven, this place is nothing more than an outsized Sysco truck with Maryland Lottery TVs attached to it. And yet, there's something about the way they blend the toppings on a Medium Original ($13.95) that makes the whole thing come into harmonious bliss. Make sure to get a medium (which is rectangular) "original" (which comes with pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, green peppers, and onions). Don't nibble; fold the pieces in half and scarf them down with an ice cold Bud Lite. You won't thank me, I promise - but it will at least make me appear flawed and human in your sympathetic eyes. Cheers, Rocks.
  3. Gotcha. So, does that Silver Spring "The Bagelry " place boil the bagels? Are they posers? Maybe good posers but still posers?
  4. A friend suggested we drop in to Pollo Mex last night, and I was dubious because it sounded like yet another latin american chicken place. Well, they do have rotisserie chicken, but that barely scratches the surface. Arriving about 8PM on a Wednesday, the place clearly does a lot of carryout business, and about 3/4 of the twelve or so tables were occupied. Three guests were also seated at the (full) bar, eating and clearly enjoying a pitcher of sangria. Noise level was low to medium. Service was prompt and friendly, we started with a half-pitcher of margaritas that lasted the two of us through the meal, accompanied by nice light chips and a clearly homemade salsa with nice chunks of tasty fresh tomatos . We split a ceviche appetizer, and were blown away with its good sized chunks of firm flounder mixed with romaine, tomatoes, onion and cilantro...somehow there was something special in the dressing, and we pondered for a while before realizing it was a touch of ginger. This is a generous, outstanding dish that could be a light meal for one. I had a grilled steak, looked like thick flank but I dunno, flavorful and moist, with tostones and yucca, I preferred the oh so mildly sweet yucca to the drier tostones. My companion had a wonderful dish of pork with onions, fried plantains , beans and rice. That was it for us, no dessert. Overall, great service, great food, and an interesting and broad menu with something for everyone. Next time, I want to try the tortas, havent had a good one since I left California and I have a feeling Pollo Mex will deliver. http://www.pollomex.com/ (the online menu does not reflect the full menu in house).
