  1. Oby Lee had a really good coffee shop/roastery in Rehoboth Beach for years. He could make disgusting-sounding flavored coffees taste really good. Their sticky buns were legendary. We heard he lost it in a bitter divorce. Anyone been to his place in Arlington? http://www.obylee.com/
  2. I heard about Snap on washingtonpost.com's Going Out Gurus blog and was curious to see how the crepes and bubble tea tasted. For those who may not know, bubble tea is a drink that originated in Taiwan. You have a choice of tea base (black or green) and you can add milk (or not) and various flavors (ex: mango, passion fruit, green apple, etc) and then the fun part - gummy bear like tapioca balls at the bottom that you slurp through an unusually large straw. Bubble tea's this great paradox of drinking and chewing your beverage at the same time. If you've never tried it before, start with the plain milk tea and work your way from there. The store is located off Thomas Jefferson Street near the Barnes and Noble. It's a small, cute little storefront with a patio in the back to sit and relax in. (Oddly enough, it SHOULD have a restroom since it offers seating but the owner said there wasn't one and directed us to Barnes and Noble instead) OK, I could go on about the menu and the decor but let's get down to it: the bubble tea bit ventworm nuts. Bit them and spat them out. The drink was somewhat watery, no milky creaminess present. Worse yet, there wasn't much of a tea taste to the drink. There was a faint aftertaste and that was about it. The bubbles were overcooked, mushy and somewhat slimy. And worse yet, they were skimpy with the bubbles. Normally, you should have a layer of bubbles that are two to three bubbles high. We got one layer - that was ridiculous. It wasn't a horrible drink - it wasn't undrinkable per se. It just wasn't done well at all. (I know there's a thread about complaining in restaurants but how would one handle this? Basically telling them their entire product line is not executed well? That would be really arrogant of me if I did that!) As for the crepes, I've never been to France so I don't have a "golden standard" to compare them to. However, I've had some fantastic crepes in Greece (of all places) that burst at the seams with generous fillings in a well cooked thin crepe that was lightly freckled with brown spots (are crepes supposed to have a bit of brown?) Where to go for a decent bubble tea? The one place in the area that does a good job is Ten Ren's Tea Time in College Park. They also serve a green tea noodle dish with pork and tofu that's sublime. Good dumplings, too.
  3. Bonjour Waffles, a new food truck featuring Belgian waffles, crêpes and Liège waffles, is opening in Downtown Silver Spring this weekend: https://www.sourceofthespring.com/waffles-food-truck-coming-silver-spring/
  4. Seeking the best crêpery and crêpes served in the greater DC/Baltimore metropolitan region. Traditional crêpes or unusual crêpes. I want crêpes that reflect some effort, thought and care - with great ingredients. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.
  5. No website that I could find, so here is their twitter: @HolyCrepesTruck Le Menu is here. This truck has been visiting a parking lot near my office the last couple of weeks. I have gone twice, and found both of my savory crepes delicious. The pesto aioli has been in both, and it's phenomenal. Today's was bacon, ham, mozzarella, onion, tomato, aioli. I have never had a savory crepe before but these are nice and crispy on the outside and you can almost eat them like a burrito until gravity and wet ingredients collapse the last few bites which are then finished with a fork. Being able to text my order and run to grab it when it was ready is a nice feature, especially when it's -37 degrees with wind chill.
  6. After "coming soon" for a long time, this long-awaited creperie quietly opened on Wednesday. They're still not 100% up-to-speed (sandwiches, for instance, are still a couple of days away from appearing), but they're almost there. The place has a rustic elegance to it, with a wooden communal table in the center and shelves lined with homemade preserves and pickles. The menu lists seven savory crepes (plus one weekly special) and nine sweet crepes. Any of the crepes on the regular menu can be made gluten-free. In addition to sandwiches, they have salads; salads and spreads that can be turned into sandwiches; and sides that are mostly salads. It's not listed on the menu, but they apparently will also be offering homemade soups. I didn't sample any food but had a good cup of drip coffee (large--16 oz., I think--for $2.75). The crepes range in price from $7 (various) to $12, for "The Body Builder": Double chicken, two eggs, and double cheese. I neglected to ask what the coffee was, but the packaged coffee they have for sale is Swing's, so I assume that's what they were brewing as well. The refrigerated case was being stocked while I was there. They had yogurt, milk, and cartons of eggs, plus a few other things I don't recall. Their website doesn't have the menu up yet. They're updating Facebook, though. I should give their hours: Monday: 7AM to 2 PM Tuesday - Friday: 7AM to 9PM Saturday: 9AM to 9PM Sunday: 9AM to 5PM
  7. Anyone else been here and disappointed? The concept appeals to me, but the execution is not so good. Cheap ingredients and sloppy execution in dishes that sound good otherwise. [warning: that last sentence based on a sample of three dishes only] I want to like this place.
