I got to know Alicia Wolman, the owner of Sublime Canine, at the Reston dog park, where she had an uncanny ability to keep an eye on all of her client dogs. My standard poodle, Storm, is downright crazy about her. Storm is not the easiest dog to handle at the dog park because she plays hard** and has the doggie equivalent of asperger's syndrome and can't read other dogs' body language to know when to back off. Alicia took this all in stride and gave me some useful hints for distracting Storm when she starts overwhelming other dogs. Alicia offers a number of services, including LONG dog park expeditions with the dogs getting 2 or more hours of serious, supervised playtime, which she calls the "puppy pack." She also does behavioral work with dogs, including long-term work with timid, fearful dogs. Alicia tries to pair your dog up with at least one other compatible dog when suggesting a schedule for her puppy pack service. The puppy pack goes to several area dog parks and the large fenced back yard of one customer. An exhausted dog is a happy and well-behaved dog, and mine are exhausted after their weekly puppy pack outing. Alicia is also flexible enough to take my dogs on an as needed basis when work drags me out of the home office for more than an hour or two. I love any opportunity to suggest a great person and great business to the general public. We adopted our elderly chihuahua from A Forever Home, a rescue organization based in Chantilly, VA (which deserves its own thread), and being first-time dog owners we knew we needed some general obedience training in order to understand how our new pup worked. Toni Woods-Wilson offers both puppy and adult obedience classes in a group setting, as well as private training for those who need it. The classes were fantastic, Toni is patient and understands dog language and motivation to a degree that I found magical. In seconds she would have stubborn dogs obeying her every word. She's easy to approach for tough questions, plus she's just a lot of fun to spend an hour with each week. Within weeks our dog could sit, stay, walk on a lead and do a few other tricks. Plus at the end of the class you get a hilarious picture of your dog wearing a graduation cap (worth the money alone). She teaches classes at the Wagtime doggy daycare in Shaw as well as the Anytime K-9 space in SE. I cannot recommend her services enough. Arlene Fletcher -
Dogtown Maryland is a great kennel and training operation in Brandywine, MD. The owners, Craig and Cindy Jolly, are a former Air Force K9 trainer and current groomer, respectively. They are conscientious about the dogs they'll take (no aggressive dogs, nor dogs with extreme separation anxiety), and will do a "test run" with the dogs to see how they handle being kenneled there. They and their staff give each dog individualized attention, including two playtimes per day. Dog-friendly dogs are allowed to play together in their large play area, while non-dog-friendly dogs get separate play time. Each dog (or dogs, if multiples from the same family) gets its own "house" with a bed, a yard, and a webcam, if so desired. All for the entirely reasonable price of $30/day per dog. Matthew and I have been kenneling our Akitas (now Akita, singular) here since at least 2003. They are always happy, well-fed, and have had plenty of attention during their stay (Aki even gets to hang out in the office sometimes). At each pickup, Craig gives us a complete report on how the dogs were, including if they weren't eating or if they had/developed any symptoms to watch out for. Dogtown doesn't accept new Akitas and certain other breeds, so find out whether they take your breed. We're grateful they've continued taking Aki -- even though they're quite a haul from our house, the care they provide is unmatched.
