  1. http://bvfarmfood.com/ 8am-9pm daily Went to Bon Vivant with the Momma. I had forgotten Evening Star wasn't open for lunch, and we decided to try somewhere we hadn't been before instead of wandering down to Cheesetique. I got a pear and walnut salad with pulled chicken. Momma got a flank steak salad. The salad was good, but the fancy way they put the dressing on which looks very nice, isn't super practical. Next time I will just ask for dressing on the side and mix it in myself, and ask for some cracked pepper. The chicken was very good though. The salad itself was fine, if a bit boring, the dressing issue just meant it could use some seasoning. I think Mom's was likely a bit of the same. I should have gotten a sandwich- I just didn't want to spend the WW points on bread. I really like that they have nice real size glasses in the dining room with water, that is really nice. This place had a few groups meeting in the space and had a big table in the back. They were doing a decent take out business, there seem to be a lot of people in Del Ray looking for healthy options, and this would fit that, they also have some vegetarian and vegan options, more vegetarian than vegan.
  2. I work in Ballston. I was a happy sometimes consumer of salads fro Sweetleaf, a short two and a half or so blocks from my office. A nice reason for a stroll. In good or even half good weather. Then, Sweetgreen entered and offred free delivery to a common area in our building by noon. All you have to do is remember to order before 11. It's been my go to because of the convenience alone. The other day, I forgot to gt my order in on time. I wanted salad. I walked to Sweetleaf. And then I was reminded about how much more I prefer sweetleaf. Customization is more in your face and in person, but they toss the salad for you and their stuff seems fresher to me if only slightly. I walked back to my office with a bigger and more delicious salad and devoured it. It hit the spot. Sweetgreen will unfortunately win more than not because of delivery, but when I gotstahaveit, I will get me sweetleaf. You?
  3. Since the closest topic I could find was "Quiet, Healthy Sunday Dinner" and the last response was in 2010, I thought I would start a new topic. I'm new here so feel free to move it if there's a better place for it. I'm not getting any younger and certain dining indiscretions are starting to catch up to me. Therefore, I'm working on changing my usual approach to food to keep a focus on quality and healthy ingredients, with the occasional indulgence here and there. Also, we don't typically go out to eat because we don't want to cook. When we go out (wife and I), we're looking for an overall experience complete with great food. So, I'm not going to be happy or satisfied if I go to a restaurant with all these fantastic, unhealthy options and I feel required to order chicken breast and broccoli. To the point of this post, I'm trying to come up with a list of places with healthy options (either the focus of the restaurant or an individual dish) for all occasions. To get started, here are some of the occasions that come to mind and potential options (though I'm not endorsing these, nor have I even been to many of them): Quick/On the way home, could be either pick up or delivery - Whole Foods prepared foods, Protein Bar, etc Casual, reasonably priced, order at counter or table service with minimal fuss - Busboys & Poets, etc Higher-end dining, a nice night out - Elizabeth's Gone Raw, Restaurant Nora, etc Any thoughts, suggestions, additions would be greatly appreciated in developing a reliable list of go to options. 4. Sweet Leaf Cafe (formerly Sweetleaf until Green Leaf sued them) has locations in McLean and Vienna and offers a variety of excellent and large salads.
  5. "Restaurants Making Vegetables the Star of the Meal" on cbsnews.com Earth to everyone: "Vegetable-Forward Cooking" is a way to save restaurants money - nothing more; nothing less. Yes, older, health-conscious diners like me have been doing this for years, but restaurants have only just begun to figure out it's a way for them to make more profit. Anyone who thinks otherwise still believes in Santa Claus. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but make no mistake that it drives down the food cost significantly for restaurants to do this. And to sell it as "caring about the diner" is to add a layer of bullshit on top of the profit. Sorry to be so cynical, but people have known for decades that reversing the proportions of meats and vegetables is in the diners' best health interests. I wonder if these "vegetable-forward restaurants" are lowering the prices of their entrees accordingly....
