  1. SE1 EP1 - "The Addams Family Goes to School" I watched this episode last night - this was a disturbingly creepy comedy. Trivia: Carolyn Jones (Morticia) spent less time on the screen (six minutes) than anyone who was ever nominated for Best Supporting Actress, playing a lonely existentialist in "The Bachelor Party" (1957):
  2. Quicksand is total bullshit, a fabrication, perpetuated by Hollywood until about fifty years ago. Come on, fess up - some of you didn't know this. Pssst ... don't feel bad ... I didn't know either. The truth is that, most likely, nobody in the history of the world has ever died in quicksand (underwater is an exception because you can drown, and I suppose if you were an unfortunate skydiver, and landed head-first, you'd be pretty much hosed). Jun 15, 2002: "Where Has All the Quicksand Gone?" on boryssnorc.com Oct 7, 2002: "What is Quicksand" by Darrel G.F. Long on scientificamerican.com Sep 29, 2005: "Quicksand Myth Exposed" by Patricia Reaney on abc.net.au The "shortcut" way to look at this is: Quicksand is about twice as dense as the human body, so you can only sink about halfway down before stopping, and you couldn't become submerged even if you tried. This is about as close as you come to dying:
  3. My friend in Hollywood told me that there is a place there called Pizzeria Mozza which may have the best pizza in the world- topping even pizzeria bianco. has anyone on this board been there? my friend said the baker nancy silverton spent 5 years researching on how to make the perfect crust. the restaurant is co-owned by mario batali. my friend said the wait to get reservations in about a month (for pizza!?!). he also said they opened an Italian osteria next door serving more pasta that has an amazing mozzarella bar. 4. This has troubled me for many years, so I'm just going to put it out there, without much comment. I find it terribly sad that our Jewish actors, actresses, and others in Hollywood found (and still find) the need to make the U.S. public believe that they aren't Jewish. When our Jewish entertainers decide to stop changing their names in order to pander to middle America, that will be a sign that we're living in a post-racist society; until then, this is essentially the free market dictating behavior, and I find it sad, pathetic, and infuriating. If this falls under the eyes of any Jew who has changed their name for public acceptance, I'm really sorry you felt the need to do this. However, the one thing you are absolutely not allowed to do, going forward, is to pressure gays and lesbians to come out - you've lost that right. --- Note: I had originally posted a video, which quietly went through a large list of Jewish entertainers who had changed their names not to sound Jewish, but after watching the entire thing, I didn't like what I saw as the motivation behind making the video (quite frankly, it seemed anti-Jewish), so I deleted it. However, there are many examples on the internet, for example, this list on IMDB which is not limited to the Jewish people. Peace to all, Rocks
  5. Given that I've seen one film eligible, and know virtually nothing, would people please chime in and discuss the awards here? I promise you that this thread will have a lovingly curated, permanent home, and I would be extremely interested in what you have to say. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that if you mention a film, an actor or actress, a director, a score, or whatever, I'll be very likely to see it just based on your discussion. Thanks in advance, and I hope you all can help me out here because I know zippo, and I want to learn.
  6. Osteria Mozza: has anyone been? Willing to make a reservation for one (!) I was just told that I should not have a problem having dinner at the food bar on a Friday night in two weeks. I was/am shocked especially considering that I've made reservations for Chinois' food bar for 15+ years and, many times, been told there were no seats available. Is this a reflection on the restaurant? Is the economy in Southern CA that bad? I thought Osteria Mozza was among L. A.'s hardest reservations. I'm going but I'm still almost shocked that I may be able to have dinner there.
