  1. Dog Haus opened today. The second local location, the other being in Bethesda. It's a chain from California. It's a small footprint, but a tight concept with a full bar, tons of taps, and hot dogs, sausages, burgers, and plant based choices as well. I will wait until it calms down a bit (free dogs today and before opening there was a line around the block at least 100 deep!).
  2. I have been meaning to try Gazebo Cafe in Kentlands for a while because it has pretty good local press. They don't have a website, but they have some sort of Facebook Page [unofficial].. Located a short walk from my house in the Kentlands, this is a little space with a bar and a few tables inside and outside (probably can't seat much more than 15 people, if that). Whenever we have tried to go, we couldn't get a table because it is so popular. Today we tried and hit it at the right time and nabbed a table. Gazebo is pretty much a coffee car with a breakfast/lunch/brunch menu. It is Korean owned and as a result they have a Korean menu also. All dishes looked very fresh and like they were prepared with care and love. Today I opted for the 2 eggs, with Korean beef with scallions and waffle brunch item with organic ginger/honey tea. I ordered the eggs over medium. They were served on a plate with the beef. I broke the yoke and mixed everything together. The flavors were very good. The waffle was also good, from a Belgian press. The tea came with a bunch of fresh ginger in the bottom. The tea was perfect for me as I have a cold, and the honey coated the throat. My wife and daughter each got half a waffle with ice cream (which holds a spot in my wife's heart from her days dining in Long Island diners). My 5 year old daughter had no idea what she was in for and sat wide eyed in disbelief at what she had ordered. Needless to say she finished every bit on her plate and asked for a spoon to try and get what remained of her cookies and cream ice cream. The waffle had a generous scoop of ice cream, with whipped cream, some drizzled chocolate syrup and couple of sliced strawberries. My wife was equally pleased. The service was very warm, kind of like you were dining at someone's home. We will definitely be back. Oh yes, it wasn't a typo, but they do also have dry cleaning, although I am pretty sure it isn't done on-site. I need to go back and have a pure Korean dish. I am sure it will be good.
  3. Before I started writing this, I did a quick search on the site to see if a thread already existed for Vasili's. There was mention of this place in a thread which turned into a discussion about the woeful lack of "mom and pop" joints. If ever a place was the antithesis of "mom and pop" it's The Kentlands, a faux village where you have to look around the corner of each building to make sure it isn't just a 2-dimensional facade like you'd find on a movie set. In the middle this Truman Show-like neighborhood you'll find Vasili's Mediterranean Grill. I'm happy to have found it based on my meal there last night. The place is casual and friendly, and mom and pop know what they're doing in the kitchen. For starters we had some stuffed grape leaves in avgolemono sauce ($8). They tasted freshly made, not like something that had been sitting in a storage container for days like I've tasted elsewhere. I also had some tender grilled baby octopus ($11) which was as good as I'd expect at a place like Black Salt or Hook. The lamb souvlaki ($13) was enjoyable with its tender flavorful meat, fresh veggies, and what seemed to be homemade pita. My only complaint would be the somewhat dull Greek salad that came with my entree. The dressing was too heavy and they were skimpy on the feta which lacked the briny flavor I expected. Give me a few more olives too! Vasili's isn't going to blow you away, but its good honest solid cooking. They deserve to do well, and I look forward to going back. I want to try that grilled branzino.
  4. According to their answering machine, Peperonata Pasta in Gaitherburg's Kentlands neighborhood has closed its doors. During the 2.5 years they were in operation, Peperonata was one of the few sources in central MoCo for a good cannoli and really fresh pasta.
  5. Boulevard Tavern is located in the old O'Donnell's space, this is another branch of the Wiedmaier empire. There is a natural pull for me as I can walk here from my house. The menu is pretty basic pub fare with Wiedmaier mussel choices and some BBQ offerings. I had a hamburger which was cooked to the proper temperature and served on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, and onion. Overall it tasted above average. The fries were cooked well. My wife had a mussel entree which she enjoyed. All in all the service was pretty good, the prices reasonable. Nothing really jumped out positive or negative, but being able to walk there in less than 5 minutes is a big plus for me. We will probably be back, but not in a terrible rush. They have a nice outside seating area which had live music last night. Will definitely be a good summer spot.
  6. Apparently buoyed by their success in the former "Last Mango" location in Kentlands, the owners of Zodiac Grill opened "Zodiac BBQ" in the adjacent storefront a few months ago. Perhaps they shouldn't have bothered. The "pulled pig sandwich on onion roll" had the consistency of a Sloppy Joe, with no chunks of pork, only shreds, and in any case mixed with its sauce to the extent that you could have substituted just about any protein source for texture. The babyback ribs were almost unbelievably dry and practically devoid of moisture, with the meat having taken on the chewy and translucent properties of jerky, except for a dried-on coating of sauce. Very likely the worst purported approximation of barbeque that I've yet encountered. Bzzzzt.
  7. While I agree with the comments on the restaurant based upon the merits of it's food, I have to disagree on your assessment of the Kentlands. I know that everyone has and is entitled to an opinion, but I think you are overly harsh on the Kentlands/Lakelands. Both are a great friendly neighborhoods, with lots of amenities, friendly people, all in a walkable neighborhood. I really can't understand what is so Truman Show about the neighborhoods. It is not sterile, there is lots of variety of houses and a really nice place to raise a family. Sorry to veer off course of the goal of this site, and I may be biased because I live here, but I completely disagree with your assessment of the neighborhood.
  8. Per Bethesda Magazine: "Former Food & Wine Co. Chef Working To Rebrand Kentlands Restaurant" by Andrew Metcalf in bethesdamagazine.com Michael Harr is taking over the dreadful Largent's in the Kentlands and rebranding it as Kentlands Kitchen. If he succeeds, it would be a welcome boost to the area.
  9. We were up Kentlands way today and stopped in here. Ha Ku Ba has been operating for at least several years and I'd been 2 or 3 times previously. Vague recollections of it being a decent, lower priced, sushi spot but it didn't quite reach that level tonight. The "ninja" sashimi platter ($27.95) would have been enough to share if 20% of the fish wasn't tilapia (!) which we didn't eat. I'm not sure I've ever seen Tilapia on a sushi/sashimi plate before unless it was there posing as red snapper or something else as happens too often. Tuna, fluke, and salmon were fine--at Sakana (Dupont) level. The octopus was a bit stringy and overwhelmed a bit by orange roe. An order of tamago ($3.45) was of the plasticene variety. We ordered a nice specialty roll with spicy tuna and eel on top ($9.95) but, sheesh, did they have to call it a "Viagra roll" and then, add insult to injury by having another maki option titled "Viagra II"?!?!
  10. Coming to Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg. In the space formerly occupied by Qdoba and (before that) Baja Fresh. A few doors down from Buca di Beppo and across the parking lot from Pacifica Cafe I'm kind of torn on this one. Torn between wtf? and a sigh of relief that it isn't another pizza place, nail spa or fast-mex. I hope it does well - maybe MedImmune offers untapped potential, and maybe this will catch some overflow from the line-out-the-door Bonefish Grill across the main street. I dunno. There's a menu pasted to the door with oysters, lobster and other such items. Interior hasn't yet begun; Qdoba just cleared out. More as things happen. Edit - no, that's not a typo in the title. Bleu.
  11. Anyone else been here and disappointed? The concept appeals to me, but the execution is not so good. Cheap ingredients and sloppy execution in dishes that sound good otherwise. [warning: that last sentence based on a sample of three dishes only] I want to like this place.
